Taiwan Tea Wins Big at UK Competition
Tea is a big part of culture in the United Kingdom.
Tea time is not just tea time.
There's "elevenses", that's tea served at around 11 o'clock in the morning.
There's "afternoon tea", that's tea with sandwiches and maybe cakes.
And there's "high tea", that's tea with a hot meal after work.
Some even say the British are "tea people".
And now, a tea made right here in Taiwan has won a big British award.
The tea, called "Oriental Beauty Tea 1" was awarded 3 stars in the Great
Taste Awards.
Three stars means something is "extraordinarily (格外的、絕頂的) tasty food".
How hard is it to get three stars?
Only 2 percent of the foods and drinks that enter the competition get 3 stars.
"Oriental Beauty Tea 1" is made by Taiwan tea maker Jacky Chang.
He makes his tea in Miaoli County.
Jacky says to make "Oriental Beauty Tea 1", he had to do something different.
Taiwan had a lot of rainy weather this year.
And Jacky had to pick his tea leaves at a different time.
Then he had to be very careful when roasting the tea leaves.
The humidity and temperature had to be carefully controlled.
Jacky
Jacky says he is going to rename the tea "Queen's Garden".
He says the name is in honor of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

How can you turn 25 years old two times?
Well, this turtle has two heads!
Janus the turtle also has two hearts.
He has two pairs of lungs (肺).
Janus was born at the Geneva Natural History Museum, in Switzerland.
The museum has a team of people who take care of him.
Every day, they feed Janus organic salad.
Janus also gets daily massages (按摩).
And he takes baths in green tea and chamomile (甘菊).
The people who take care of him say he has two very different personalities
They say Janus' right head is more curious (好奇).
And his left head loves to eat.
One head's favorite food is endives (苦苣).
And the other head's favorite food is carrots.
Janus would not survive long in the wild.
That's because he cannot pull his head into his shell when he is in danger.
But luckily, he lives at the museum.
And the people there take very good care of him.
Now Janus is turning 25 years old.
The museum thinks he might be the world's oldest two-headed turtle.

Singapore Team Builds Floating Gardens with Plastic Bottles
The world has a plastic problem.
And plastic bottles are a big part of that problem.
According to the United Nations, the world buys one million plastic bottles
every minute.
Most of these bottles are used once, then thrown away.
So many people have been trying to figure out what to do with all those
bottles.
A group of people in Singapore have come up with an idea.
They are turning plastic bottles into floating gardens.
These floating gardens are called "chinampas".
It's a very old Mexican way of farming.
People would make very small "islands" with soil that floated on water, to
grow crops (農作物).
And now a team of students and alumni (校友) at the National University of
Singapore are doing this with plastic bottles.
They used empty plastic bottles to make the base
The base is filled with soil.
And the team also adds crushed glass, from recycled glass bottles.
They say the glass helps plants grow faster.
The team grew edible plants
They grew kangkong, and laksa leaves.
And they believe their floating garden works very well.
The team says in normal soil, a kangkong plant takes about five weeks to grow.
But on the chinampas, the plants grew in less than four weeks.
They think the gardens could help Singapore grow more food.

The month of October is observed as LGBT History Month in many countries
around the world.
That includes Taiwan, too!
On Saturday, the 20th Taiwan LGBT Pride Parade (第20屆臺灣同志遊行) took
place at the Taipei City Hall Plaza.
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
The event featured many options for visitors to enjoy, including a Rainbow
Market, stage shows, and speeches from advocacy groups
One of the special attractions was the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress.
It's 16 meters wide, and is made up of flags from 68 countries where
homosexuality is illegal.
The dress' creators remove a country's flag when it legalizes homosexuality
They replace (取代) it with a rainbow flag when that happens.
That means the dress is a "living" work of art, because it changes and
evolves over time.

Since 2016, only nine countries' flags have been removed.

human beings.
From making the biggest pizza in the world to becoming the fastest man alive,
it's amazing what people can do when they set a goal and work hard.
Most people might celebrate this kind of achievement (成就) and move on, but
one Filipino athlete decided he wanted to go further
Ryan Alonzo, who is also known as "Skipman," has set his second Guinness
World Record in jump rope!
Jump rope is a high-intensity activity that uses all the muscles in the body.
There are different ways you can jump over a rope, including freestyle,
crossover, and double -under skips.
And Alonzo broke world records in two jumping styles.
He set a record in 2021 for performing 40,980 double-under skips in under 12
hours.
That means the rope goes around the body twice in a single jump.
And this month, Alonzo completed 3,371 consecutive crossovers
That's done by crossing the arms in and out while skipping over the rope.
Alonzo says having endurance (耐力) was important for both records.
It shows that practice and determination (練習和決心) are useful when you
want to reach a goal.

Smews Spotted in Cieding Wetlands
A smew has been seen in Taiwan.
No, no, not a smell.
A smew!
A smew (白秋沙又名斑頭秋沙鴨) is a type of duck.
Adult male smews are black and white.
And female smews are grey with a brown head.
They eat fish, insects, and insect larvae (幼蟲).
They live in the Eurasian arctic circle.
And they migrate to warmer places every winter.
Usually, they migrate to lands off the North Sea, the Korean Peninsula and
the Japanese archipelago.
But recently, a smew was spotted in Kaohsiung's Cieding Wetlands
for the first time!
A birdwatcher saw the wild smew, and quickly took a photo.
Many other birds that migrate for the winter also spend time in Cieding.
These include black-faced spoonbills, bean geese, and egrets (白鷺).
The Kaohsiung city government says this shows that the wetland is becoming a
good place for birds to stay over winter.
The city government says it will keep working to make the wetlands a safe and

ESA says John could be the world's first "parastronaut".
John says he has gone through challenges and hardships in life.
All this helped him understand himself emotionally and gain confidence and
strength.
John says he believes he can do anything he puts his mind to.
Now, John will help ESA understand how a physical disability might affect
space travel.
This will help the space agency understand if changes to spacesuits and
spacecraft are needed.
ESA says it could be at least five years, before John actually goes into
space.

Australians Search for Christmas Beetles
When you think of the sounds of Christmas, what do you hear?
Christmas carols?
Bells?
Or... beetles?
For many Australians, the sounds of Christmas include the sound of the
Christmas beetle.
Christmas beetles are big shiny (閃閃發亮的) beetles found in Australia.
They grow up to 3 centimeters long.
And they are mostly a beautiful golden brown or green color.
They don't bite or sting.
And some people say they are very clumsy (不靈巧) when they fly.
They come out of the ground in the summer.
And that's also Christmas time in Australia.
So many people in Australia think of Christmas when they see these beetles.
But these beautiful beetles are facing a problem.
Christmas beetles used to be everywhere in Australia.
But now many people say these beetles are disappearing (消失).
Scientists think many natural places are now being taken over by humans, and
the beetles have less places to live, and less to eat.
But they need help to know more.
Scientists in Australia are launching the "Christmas beetle count project".
They are asking Australians to take pictures of any Christmas beetles they
see this year, and upload it to a special app.
The scientists can use this information to get an idea of how many Christmas
beetles there are left.
They say the Christmas beetle is very important to Australia's environment.
The beetle's larvae (幼蟲) grow underground and help the soil stay healthy.
And the beetles are food for many other animals like lizards and birds.
The scientists hope that all Australians can help make sure that the
Christmas beetle is around for many more Christmas seasons to come.
