Taxi Driver Surprises Man

TAXI!

Have you taken a taxi in Taiwan? Many taxi drivers here know great places to
eat!
你有在台灣搭過計程車嗎？很多計程車司機都會知道當地好吃的餐廳在哪裡！

One day, a man got in a taxi. The taxi driver and the man talked. The man
said he did not pay for long taxi rides. Someone else paid for him. This man
also said he had lots of online money.
有天，有一位男子坐上計程車。他和司機說他坐長途計程車不用自己付錢，也有很多虛擬貨幣。

The taxi driver thought the man was a scammer. Scammers try to get money from
people. Sometimes scammers tell people, "Let's meet and be friends." Then
they ask for money.
司機懷疑這一位乘客是騙別人錢的詐欺犯。

The taxi driver quietly picked up his phone. He texted someone. Then he
talked more with the man. The taxi driver said he knew about a good fish soup
place.
司機偷偷傳簡訊給別人後，繼續跟那名可疑的乘客聊天，並向他推薦了一間魚湯店。

The taxi driver and the man went to the fish soup place. But someone else
went too: a police officer! The taxi driver had texted the police!
司機跟乘客一起到魚湯店吃飯。突然之間，警察出現了！原來司機偷偷聯繫了警察！

The police wanted to ask the man questions. They thought the man was a
scammer too.

The police are trying hard to find scammers. This taxi driver tried to help
them. What a surprise!

In this episode of News Bites: Pingtung's Laiyi High School travels to the US

Pingtung's Laiyi High School goes to Washington DC for exchange

Last month, a group of high schoolers from Pingtung got to take a very
special trip.

They went to the capital city 首都 of the United States.

That's Washington DC!

They went to do exchange 交流 with another high school there.

And they got to perform at the Taiwanese representative office in Washington
DC for National Day. 他們還去駐美代表處表演！

Most students at Laiyi High School are Paiwan 排灣族, so they also got to
share Paiwan culture.

The group of 12 teachers and students stayed in DC for 9 days.

Laiyi was invited to participate in the exchange by the Taiwanese
representative to the US, Alexander Yui.

But before they traveled all the way to DC, they were already doing exchange
with the students in DC.

怎?可能！

They did video calls 視訊 with the other students for several months.

On their calls, they got to share language and culture with each other.

And many students participated in a bilingual class to strengthen their
English skills.

The Pingtung County government was also very happy that the students got to
travel all the way to the US to do exchange.

They say, it's a very good opportunity to show off Pingtung to the rest of
the world.

The Laiyi school principal says that they hope students will be more
confident to share their culture with others, thanks to this opportunity.
來義高中校長希望藉由出國表演的機會，學生會更有自信分享自己的文化。

Students said that Taiwanese and Paiwanese cultures should not just be only
in Taiwan, they can also be brought to other countries too.

They performed at the Taiwanese office in DC, with many Taiwanese Americans
in the audience.

They sang three songs, including one by Indigenous singer A Bao.

On their trip, they also visited the White House and The Smithsonian National
Museum of African American History and Culture.

Laiyi High School was founded in 1968.

It has many classes to promote 推廣 Indigenous cultural education.

Students can learn about millet 小米 farming, local plants, and food culture.

And we got to visit them last semester! 上個學期，我們ICRT還訪問來義高中！

How many cats is too meow-ny cats? Cyprus struggles to deal with
overpopulation of cats

Are you a cat person or a dog person? 你是貓派還是狗派？

Personally, I prefer cats, but I like dogs too.

Well maybe you should plan a visit to Cyprus 賽普勒斯.

That's an island country in the Mediterranean Sea 地中海.

In Cyprus, there are too many cats.

Officials think that there are about as many cats as people.
政府估計賽普勒斯的人口總數，跟貓咪的數量差不多！

The human population of Cyprus is one million 一百萬, so they think there are
also about one million cats there.

But, residents 居民 think that there are actually way more cats than just one
million.

Well, that's a lot of cats, but is it really a bad thing?

It could be.

The problem is that cats can be a problem for nature.

At home, your pet cat probably eats dry food and canned food.
家裏養的貓，主要是吃貓飼料跟罐頭吧。

But in the wild, cats might eat birds and other small animals.

If there are too many cats hunting for birds, then there will not be enough
birds.

Maybe if there are not enough birds, then there will be too many bugs.

So what is Cyprus doing to fix the problem?

They have been sterilizing 結? cats for a long time so that they can't have
babies.

But, people think it's not enough to control the population.

Some experts think that clinics should sterilize cats for free to encourage
more people to take cats to get sterilized.
有些專家認?，動物診所應該幫貓咪免費結?，這樣可以鼓勵更多人這樣做。

They also want people to be able to use their phones to tell officials where
there are many cats.

It's very hard to decide what to do, because Cyprus has a long history with
cats.

Even now, there are lots of places with food just for cats and little cat
houses on the island.

Experts think that cats originally arrived in Cyprus to deal with a snake
problem.

French archaeologists 考古學家 found the skeleton (骨頭) of a cat and a human
buried together that is probably from about 9500 years ago.

Many tourists also really like the cats and give them lots of food.

News Flash

In today's News Flash, our vocab word is "population."

That's a noun, and it's spelled "P-O-P-U-L-A-T-I-O-N."

"Population" usually is about a group of people.

For example, the population of Taiwan is over 23 million.

That means, there are more than 23 million people in Taiwan.

Even though it's mostly for people, you can also use it to talk about cats,
like in Cyprus.

There, the cat population is about one million.

In the news story, we talked about "overpopulation."

In this case, "over" means 超過, so overpopulation is when the population is
too big.

And "population" is called "人口" in Mandarin.
