K-Pop Group "Blackpink" to Perform in Kaohsiung next March on World Tour
South Korean girl group Blackpink is coming to southern Taiwan-Kaohsiung, in

Blackpink's Kaohsiung concert will be their second appearance (出現/現身) in
Taiwan, after their last performance in Taipei in 2019.
It looks like a very busy year for them, so let's wish them the best of luck!

Brad Pitt says he suffers from Facial Blindness
Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt has revealed he suffers from facial blindness.
What is facial blindness?
It is a neurological disorder (精神疾病) that causes people to find it
difficult to recognize people's faces.
In more serious cases, sufferers can draw a blank when seeing the face of a
family member or even one's own face.
The condition is called prosopagnosia
It is a little-known ailment (病症) that afflicts (折磨) about 1 in 40 people.
It often triggers anxiety (觸發焦慮), as people feel embarrassed in social
situations when they struggle to remember who people are.
Sufferers tend to (傾向) avoid situations in which they will meet people, and
as a result become withdrawn (鬱悶).
58-year-old Brad Pitt says he has not been officially diagnosed with
prosopagnosia.
He first spoke about it in 2013.
He said nobody believed him when he could not recall their name.
He worried that people thought he was being aloof (冷漠), inaccessible
(難以親近的), and self-absorbed (自私的)".
He said, "People hate me because they think I'm disrespecting them."
He said he has used many ways to get around (解決) his lack of recall
He asked acquaintances (熟人) where he met them before, but said that made
the situation worse.
He hopes speaking about facial blindness will raise awareness of it.

Koala put on Endangered Species List
Many people think koalas are the cutest animals in the world.
Do you think so, too?
Animal lovers will be saddened to hear that this lovable marsupial
has been moved to the endangered species list
The Australian Koala Foundation estimates there are somewhere between 43,000
to 100,000 koalas left in the wild.
Their numbers have been dwindling rapidly (快速減少) due to the disease, loss
of habitat (棲息地), bushfires (森林大火), being hit by cars, and other
threats.
Stuart Blanch of the World Wildlife Fund in Australia said, "Koalas have gone
from non-listing, to vulnerable, to endangered, within a decade."
Stuart
That is a shockingly fast decline.
He added that koalas are in danger of "sliding towards extinction (絕種)",
unless there are "stronger laws... to protect their forest homes".
Australia's Environment Minister (澳洲環境理事長) Sussan Ley said there have
been "many pressures on the koala", and that it's "vulnerable (容易受傷的) to
climate change (氣候變化) and to disease (疾病).
She said the 2019-2020 bushfires, which killed at least 6,400 of the animals,
were "a tipping point" (引爆點).

Hi there, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Nancy Sun...
And I'm Trevor Tortomasi.
In today's news:
The importance of cybersecurity, the dangers of extreme climate, and clashes
between orcas and boats.
All that and more, coming up next.

Cybersecurity and the Future of Online Security
We all know that the internet is a useful tool (工具).
We can find almost anything we need online.
But can we trust everything on the world wide web?
Nowadays, information about anything can easily be found online at any time.
But this also comes with a level of risk (風險).
In the past few years, the government has reported more and more cyberattacks
A cyberattack is when someone uses computers to get into other computer
systems, usually to do harm
Cyberattacks can be very dangerous, because machines and computer systems are
a big part of our everyday lives.
So cybersecurity (網絡安全) is now very important.
The government has set a goal of training 350 cybersecurity experts by 2024.
And most companies have cybersecurity experts working for them.
This means there is a big demand for people who know about cybersecurity.
Is cybersecurity something you want to learn more about, or even build your
future career around?

Climate Change Helps Infectious Diseases Spread
Do you think that extreme climate affects diseases?
Floods, heat waves, and drought are becoming more and more common (普遍) in
recent years.
They are happening all over the world.
And they are also getting more severe (劇烈).
All this extreme weather makes the impact of diseases even worse (更糟糕).
Infectious diseases like malaria and cholera are already dangerous for people.
And things are worse when they happen in places facing extreme weather.
Experts say more than half of infectious diseases have been made worse
because of extreme climate.
For example, heavy downpours (傾盆大雨) cause flooding.
That flooding leads to more disease-carrying mosquitoes and rats.
And these mosquitoes and rats spread diseases to more people.
But overall, scientists say a lot more research needs to be done, to
understand how extreme climate affects disease.

Orcas Clash with Boats in Spain
Spain is facing some problems caused by orcas (虎鯨).
Starting in the summer of 2020, orcas, also called killer whales, have been
bothering boats along the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
Experts are still trying to understand why.
In mild (溫和的) cases, orcas simply get close to boats.
But in serious cases, orcas interfere (干擾) with the boats.
The most serious case involved an orca pod
An orca pod is like an orca family.
They are usually mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins and their children.
The leader of a pod is usually an older female (母虎鯨).
And one orca pod attacked (攻擊) a sailboat.
There were 5 people onboard the boat.
The damaged boat started to sink (沈船).
Luckily, the navy (海軍) came and saved the 5 people on the boat.
But experts say some of these are not exactly attacks.
The experts say the orcas are just checking unfamiliar (陌生的) things around
their home.
And the experts point out that orcas are social creatures
For now, the scientists are asking people to stay as far away from orcas as
they can.
And they say more research is needed to understand how to protect both people
and the orcas.

Taiwan and the Worldwide Drought
2022 has been a very challenging year for climates all over the world, Taiwan
included.
News of country-wide droughts have been heard from all over the world,
including the U.S., China, and many countries in Europe.
And at first (最開始), Taiwan began this year with plentiful rainfall
(豐沛的降雨), in the rainy season between May and June.
But by late August, the water in many of Taiwan's reservoirs (水庫) was very
low.
That's because rainfall (降雨) from July to August this year has been 60%
less than average.
Some of the reservoirs even dropped under 50% of the water storage capacity
Many reservoirs in northern Taiwan had already decided to save water, too, by
providing less water pressure (水壓) to homes.
Luckily (幸好), Typhoon Hinnamnor (颱風軒嵐諾) came just in time!
Typhoon Hinnamnor brought lots of water to reservoirs all over the country.
And through the cooperation of Taiwan's homes and water providers (水公司),
the country's water levels were finally able to recover (恢復).
Who knows how much worse things would have gotten if Typhoon Hinnamnor had
decided to bypass Taiwan?

Secret Schools for Afghan Women
Since the U.S. military left Afghanistan, the majority of Afghan girls
haven't been to school in over a year.
The U.S. military (美軍) left Afghanistan on August 30th, 2021, after 20
years of war (戰爭).
But that also left the country to the Taliban (塔利班), who now rule
And according to Taliban tradition, many women are not allowed to have an
education!
That means many women and girls in Afghanistan have been banned (禁止) from
going to school.
In light of so much oppression (壓制), many people started to look for their
own ways of educating young women.
One such person is Sodaba Nazhand, who started an informal school with her
friends in Kabul (喀布爾), Afghanistan's capital (首都).
Sodaba and her friends secretly teach English, math, and science to girls and
young women.
Sodaba says they want to use education as a way to protest (反抗) against the
Taliban.
She says they are teaching girls and young women to stand up for their rights
Going to school can be a lot of hard work... but not everyone has the chance
to learn new things every day.
So try to remember how lucky you are, to be getting an education!

How Many Kinds of 'Vitamin B' Are There?
"Vitamin B" can be an important vitamin to help people focus... but which
kind is best?
There are a total of 8 different kinds of vitamin B, and they can each help
with different bodily functions
To improve energy levels, many people take vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B7.
These can help with metabolism (代謝), and are also found in nuts, eggs, and
milk.
Meanwhile, vitamin B1, B3, B6, and B12 can help with protecting the nervous
These vitamins can be found in chicken, pig liver, and also most kinds of
fish.
There is also one more category of vitamin B, which helps keep red blood
cells healthy.
They are vitamins B6, B9, B12, and they are found in citrus fruits
(柑橘類水果), like oranges, grapefruit, and lemons, and also in spinach and
yogurt.
So vitamin B can be easily found in many of the foods we have for breakfast,
lunch, or dinner!
However, it's important to remember that it doesn't help to take more than
one vitamin B pill per day.
That's because our bodies can only digest and absorb (消化並吸收) a little
bit.
So before you take any vitamins, ask your parents and your doctor which ones
can help your body the most.
And remember, nothing is better than a well-balanced diet, so no matter which
vitamins you take, make sure to eat healthy food every day!

Taiwan's Tai-phoon Dilemma
When was the last time you had a typhoon day off from school?
While some places in Taiwan had to take a few days off due to heavy rain and
strong winds, it's been a long time since the majority of Taiwan all had a
typhoon day off!
That's because there hasn't been a typhoon that has made landfall (登陸) for
a few years!
The most severe effects have only been from the periphery (外圍環流) of a
typhoon affecting Taiwan with heavy rain and strong winds.
This trend has been noticed not only by people living in Taiwan, but also by
meteorologists (氣象學家) in Japan!
They discovered that typhoons in the months of July, August, September, and
October all swerved (急轉彎) right before they got to Taiwan and went to
Japan or Korea.
Also, typhoons in the months of June, November, and December all coasted by
(掠過) the southernmost tip of Taiwan and went straight into the South China
Sea.
When this report came out, many people shared the discovery all over the
internet and many others created memes (迷因) about this unique situation.
Some people said, "It should be called the power of tai-phoon with the
'T-A-I' from Taiwan, not the regular 'T-Y' from typhoon."
Luckily for Taiwan, despite having no typhoons making landfall, enough rain
has fallen over the years, saving Taiwan many times when water levels were at
a critical point.

Making Nanodiamonds out of Bottle Plastic
Have you ever heard of diamond rain (鑽石雨)?
If you've never heard of this, it's okay, it doesn't happen on Earth.
Diamond rain happens on the planets Neptune (海王星) and Uranus (天王星),
where the environment is very extreme.
Temperatures reach many thousands of degrees Celsius (攝氏數千度) and the
pressure is millions of times greater than the Earth's.
A German research team successfully recreated (模擬) the conditions needed to
create very tiny diamonds here on earth.
The scientists fired an extremely powerful laser at a very thin layer of
plastic and then they studied what happens to the plastic.
During the laser blast, the plastic was heated to over 6,000 degrees Celsius,
and a shockwave (震波) was created that equals a million times our Earth's
atmospheric pressure (大氣壓力).
Although the entire recreation happens in just a few nanoseconds
(十億分之一秒), it is enough to create tiny diamonds that the researchers are
calling "nanodiamonds".
The plastic the researchers used is actually the same plastic you most likely
use every day, from plastic bottles!
The researchers chose this specific kind of plastic, also known as PET,
because it has a good combination and balance of carbon (碳), hydrogen (氫),
and oxygen (氧).
It makes it very similar to the atmosphere (大氣層) of Neptune and Uranus.
Because of this new discovery, scientists are trying to see how to produce
more nanodiamonds sustainably (永續發展的) and at scale (量產).
Diamonds can be used in many industrial (工業) areas and technologies.

Which City is the YouBike Capital of Taiwan?
YouBike started in Taipei in 2012, and is a common form of transportation for
many people.
But surprisingly (讓人驚訝), Taipei is not the YouBike capital city of Taiwan.
That honor goes to Kaohsiung!
YouBike 2.0 was launched in Kaohsiung in 2019, and in the beginning, many
people had doubts that it would be a success.
That's because motorbikes and scooters are so common in Kaohsiung.
Despite how common motorbikes are, YouBike has taken Kaohsiung by storm
(席捲高雄市) in the two years since its launch.
Now, people are calling Kaohsiung "the 15-minute city" because of it!
That means people living in Kaohsiung can get to almost anywhere they need to
in their daily lives within 15 minutes of walking or biking.
Many Kaohsiung citizens (高雄市居民) are replacing their cars, motorbikes,
and scooters with YouBike.
Not only is YouBike very convenient (方便) and available almost anywhere you
go, but it is also an eco-friendly and non-polluting option that has won the
hearts of many Kaohsiung citizens.
So, the next time you're in Kaohsiung, or if you already live in Kaohsiung,
remember to give YouBike a try!

Taiwan to Launch New Satellite Next Year
Taiwan is getting ready to launch another satellite (衛星) into space!
The satellite's English name is "Triton", named after the god of the seas and
storms.
And the satellite's Chinese name is 【獵風者】, which means "Wind Hunter" in
English.
Scientists are still in the process (過程中) of making sure it's finished and
working properly.
Then, they can launch it into space
As it orbits Earth (繞著地球), it will take pictures from space, to help
Taiwan's weather forecasts (天氣預報).
Scientists say this will make weather forecasts more accurate (準確).
Meanwhile, Taiwan's "National Space Organization" (國家太空中心), will be
changing its English name soon.
Next year, it will be called the "Taiwan Space Agency", or TSA.
It also plans to hire (雇用) many new people to work on important space
technology, like satellites and more.
And someday, maybe you could be one of them!
So, with a new satellite, new people, and new names, let's hope next year is
a good fresh start for Taiwan's work in space!

Astronomers Build World's Largest Digital Camera
If you have a smartphone (智慧型手機), its camera can probably take some
pretty high-quality pictures (高畫質的照片).
But what if your camera had a bigger lens (鏡片)?
Well, then it could take in more light
That means it could take pictures of things that are farther away (更遠).
So, how big could your camera get?
Some scientists in the U.S. have built the world's largest digital camera
But it's not just large... it's gigantic (巨大的)!
For the most part (大致上), the giant camera works just like smaller ones.
But the camera's lens has a diameter of 1.57 meters
That's even taller than a lot of people!
And this giant lens is so strong that it could focus on a golf ball from 24
kilometers away.
But the camera also has many pieces that are very fragile (脆弱的) and super
expensive (超級貴), so scientists had to build it VERY carefully.
The camera's first test (測試) was to take a picture of broccoli.
And scientists say they will continue testing the camera for five months.
Then, in the year 2024, it will be moved to an observatory (天文台), in the
country of Chile (智利).
After that, it will be used to look at billions of galaxies
for the next ten years.
But of course, we don't have room in our pockets (口袋不夠大) for big
machines like this.
So just try to be happy with whatever camera you have in your phone!

Billions of Phones Thrown Away This Year
After our last story, you might be thinking about how many people have phones
in their pockets.
It's definitely a lot!
In fact, researchers estimate that there are about 16 billion mobile phones
worldwide.
But when someone gets a new phone, what happens to the old one?
Many people still keep their old phones, just in case they need them again
But after a while, most old phones just get thrown away (被丟掉).
Researchers estimate (估計) that about 5.3 billion phones will be thrown away
this year.
And many people say this means we are wasting valuable technology and
electronic equipment.
That's because many phone parts can be used for other technology, like
electric cars (電動車), solar panels (太陽能板), and even wind turbines
So what can we do about these wasted phones?
Well, right now, only 17% of phones are recycled (回收).
But environmental organizations (環保組織) want to make sure 30% of phones
are recycled next year.
They are asking people to research where their old phones can be recycled.
So if you're not using your old phones... try to think about who could use it
better!
