Hi there! This is News Bites, and welcome to it!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Nancy Sun.
In today's news:
Taiwan protects animals, the force returns, and some guy eats a banana.
Stay tuned for more... Some guy eats a banana...? Stay tuned for more on
those stories, coming up next!

Taiwan Government Prepares New Animal Protection Law
In many countries, like Taiwan, people have rights (權利).
Our rights help protect us from abuse.
Well, animals (動物) have rights too!
But... animals can't understand their rights.
So people need to make laws (法律) that protect animals.
And recently, Taiwan's Council of Agriculture (農業委員會) is working on some
animal protection laws.
And one new law this month would be an amendment (修正草案) to Taiwan's
Animal Protection Act (動物保護法).
It would give pet owners more responsibilities
It would also punish anyone who abandons an animal
And if anyone is abusing (虐待) any animal, it would let the police stop them
more easily.
Finally, anyone who breaks this law may have to pay a fine of 250,000 NT!
The last time Taiwan changed its animal protection laws this much was in the
year 1998.
That's 25 years with no updates!
This new law could be a big step forward
With this extra protection, hopefully Taiwan's pets can be happier and safer!

Star Wars Day
If you watch lots of movies or TV, then you've probably seen Star Wars
The first Star Wars Movie came out in the year 1977.
And since then (自此之後), there have been many more Star Wars movies, and
LOTS of series (劇集).
But no matter which one you watch, you'll probably hear its most famous
line...
"May the Force be with you."
And because it sounds like today's date, "May the Fourth"...
Today is Star Wars Day!
Every year, people celebrate Star Wars Day by watching movies, having
parties, and dressing up as Star Wars characters
*CHEWBACCA (丘巴卡)* Ha! Did I get it...?
And you can hear lots of people saying, "May the Fourth be with you"
If you don't want to celebrate Star Wars, that's okay.
But if you DO want to celebrate, there are lots of ways to do it!

Museum Visitor Eats Artwork
Okay, so everybody knows, art can be pretty weird.
For example, one piece of art became very famous in 2019...
But it's not a painting
And it's not a dance, or a song, or a statue
No, it's just a banana taped to a wall!
The wall... The... "wall banana" was put up by an artist from Italy
He calls this piece of art "The Comedian" (喜劇演員)...
And in 2019, he sold it (賣掉了) for 120,000 US dollars, or around 3.7
million NT (大約三百七十萬台幣)!
Why didn't I think of that?
But... this crazy banana story just keeps getting crazier.
This month, the wall banana was on display in a museum in South Korea
And then, suddenly, it was EATEN by a museum visitor!
A young student walked over to the art, took it off the wall, and ate it.
When people asked him why he did it, he said he forgot to eat breakfast, so
he was hungry.
But wait... if you leave a banana in a museum, doesn't it go bad (爛掉)?
Well, um... yeah. Yeah it does. And an OLD wall banana would be pretty gross
So museum employees replace the old wall banana with a new one, every few
days.
And that's why the museum didn't punish the banana thief
But wait again, if the museum is putting up new wall bananas, aren't THEY the
artists?
WHAT IS GOING ON?!

At a Ball Game? Hold on to Your Lunch!
When golfers hit the golf ball hard, they will usually yell, "FORE!"
And that means, "Watch out! There's a ball flying through the air!"
Maybe we need something like that for baseball too.
Recently, many people were watching a Chinese Professional Baseball League
The WeiChuan Dragons were playing the Rakuten Monkeys.
But something unexpected (出乎意料) happened in the 6th inning.
A player hit a ball hard.
It was a foul ball (界外球), and went out-of-bounds.
But it flew high…
And kept flying…
Until it flew right into a young girl's lunchbox!
The food fell all over the girl and onto the floor.
And she was quite shocked (震驚).
WeiChuan Dragons staff quickly came over.
They checked to make sure the girl was okay.
And they brought over three new lunchboxes.
They gave the lunchboxes to the girl and her mom.
And another person found the foul ball, and gave it to the girl.
Many people thought this was a nice thing to do.
And what a funny story the girl will have to tell!

Robot Finds Alligator in Florida Water Pipe
A town in the U.S. was trying to solve a mystery.
In the past few weeks, many potholes (坑洞) appeared on the roads of Oviedo
in Florida.
This made it dangerous for cars to drive on the roads.
Officials thought the problem might be underground (地下).
So they used a robot with a camera on top.
The robot has four wheels, and can move around.
The robot camera helps workers check underground pipes
It can show workers if there are any leaks or cracks on the pipes.
They sent the robot camera into the town's storm drains
At first the camera just showed dark pipes and water.
Then, they saw two little glowing eyes.
The workers thought maybe it was a toad.
But then the animal turned around, and they saw a long tail.
It was a big alligator!
The alligator was about 1.7 meters long.
That's about as long as a refrigerator!
When the alligator saw the camera, it moved back.
It turned around, and crawled away.
The robot followed the alligator.
It followed the alligator for several minutes, but then the robot got stuck.
The alligator quickly disappeared.
Officials say this is why they ask people not to go into storm drains.
They said it was a good thing town workers have a robot!

Taiwan Prehistory Museum Reopens
You can learn a lot about history in a museum.
But what's in a museum about "prehistory"?
Prehistory is the time before humans started to write things down.
Humans used simple tools (工具).
But they did not have the complex (複雜的) writing systems that we have now.
So how do we know what was Taiwan like during that time?
The National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung has reopened.
It shows visitors Taiwan's prehistory, natural history, and the culture of
Taiwan's indigenous peoples.
The museum was closed for almost three years for renovation (整修).
And it reopened just in time for International Museum Day.
The museum's director says the museum shows Taiwan's history from the
Paleolithic Period (舊石器時代) to the 21st century.
The director says there are stone tools that are around 30,000 years old.
And there are new things, like a Golden Melody Award trophy lent (借) by Amis
singer Suming Lupi.
The director says she hopes visitors can see the amazing contributions of
Taiwan's Indigenous peoples.
And the museum also shows Taiwan's links to the world.
The director says archeologists have found things that show Austronesian
settlers coming to Taiwan as early as 30,000 years ago.

Nigerian Chef Breaks World Record for Nonstop Cooking
How would you show the world you are strong and hardworking?
How about by breaking a world record?
A Nigerian chef has set a new global record for nonstop cooking.
She has cooked for more than 100 hours!
The last record for nonstop cooking was 87 hours and 45 minutes.
That record was set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
Hilda Baci started cooking on Thursday, May 11th in Lagos, Nigeria.
And she passed 100 hours on May 15th.
She took a five-minute break every hour.
Or she took a one-hour break every 12 hours.
During that one hour of rest, she would take a shower, get checked by a
doctor, and rest.
Thousands of people have gathered to watch Hilda cook.
She has made dozens of Nigerian dishes, including rice and stew.
Many people are also watching online.
Why is she doing this?
Hilda says she wants to show how hardworking and determined (有決心) young
Nigerians are.
She also wants to help show how strong young African women are.
Hilda says they often have to go "an extra mile to be taken seriously".
And she is helping the world learn more about Nigerian cuisine.

New Zealand's Sheep Population Drops to Record Low
New Zealand is known for its beautiful landscapes (美麗的風景), being the
filming location of Lord of the Rings (作為電影《魔戒》拍攝地點), and…sheep!
The weather and land in New Zealand make it perfect (完美) for farmers to
keep sheep.
They can eat green grass and run around in the open fields
New Zealand is one of the world's top wool exporters, sending lots of wool
overseas every year.
In fact, it's well-known (大家都知道) that there are more sheep than people
there!
Back in 1982, there were as many as 22 sheep for every person in New Zealand.
But recently, that number reached a record low
The country released a five-year census of agricultural production
The report says that in 2022, there were fewer than five sheep for every
person.
That's the lowest number since the 1850s.
Farming has become more expensive and wool (羊毛) has become cheaper, so
there aren't as many sheep as before.

Volcanic Gas from Guishan Island
What would you do if you saw smoke coming out of a volcano?
Run far, far away?
Smoke from an underwater volcano was seen in northern Taiwan recently.
A plume (羽狀物) of gas was seen off the coast of Guishan Island.
Guishan Island, or "Turtle Island" is an island in the Pacific Ocean.
It is part of Yilan County.
The island got its name because its shape looks a bit like a turtle.
Guishan Island is also a dormant volcano
That means it has not erupted (爆發) for a long time, but still may erupt in
the future.
Many people take whale-watching boats out to the island.
And recently, one boat saw a little more than sea animals.
People on the boat saw a gas plume rise from the seawater near the island.
The plume rose up about 200 meters high!
The gas came from an opening in the volcano under the water.
But experts say the plume is not dangerous.
They say the gas probably came out after underwater rocks moved, or the earth
shifted.
The experts say this is a natural part of the environment around Guishan
Island.
The last time a gas plume was seen from the island was on January 10th this
year.

Nepali Guide Saves Climber from Everest "Death Zone"
Mount Everest is a dream for many climbers.
It's the tallest mountain on Earth above sea level, at 8,848 meters tall.
But it can also be a nightmare.
Recently, a Malaysian climber trying to climb Everest fell ill.
He was more than 8,000 meters up the mountain.
That area on the mountain is called the "death zone".
The air there is very thin, with low levels of oxygen, and temperatures can
get to minus 30 degrees Celsius.
The terrain (地形) there is also very dangerous.
The Malaysian climber could not climb anymore.
That's when a Nepali guide came along.
Gelje Sherpa was guiding a client up to the peak (山頂).
But when they saw the Malaysian climber, Sherpa said "my heart did not let me
leave him there".
The guide told his client that they would have to go back down the mountain
without reaching the peak.
The client paid at least $45,000 US dollars for the climb.
The client was angry, but Sherpa said he wanted to take the sick man down the
mountain.
The guide gave the sick man his oxygen supply, but the Malaysian man was
still very weak (虛弱).
The guide had to carry the man over parts of the mountain.
Finally, they got down to a camp at about 7,000 meters on the mountain.
A helicopter then took the sick man down the rest of the way.
The Malaysian man later sent the guide a message, telling him "You saved my
life, you are god to me".
Gelje Sherpa has reached the top of Mount Everest six times.
He says he does not regret his decision to turn back that day.
