First Native American in Space
Today, we are congratulating Nicole Mann, the first Native American to go to
space!
恭喜 Nicole 成為第一個去外太空的美國原住民!
"Native Americans'" are the first people who ever lived in North America.
We have native people here in Taiwan too! In English, they are called
"indigenous".
In Chinese, they are called "Yuan Zhu Min."
A long time ago, there were many, many indigenous people here, but today,
only about 2% of Taiwan's people are indigenous.
台灣以前很多原住民,但現在剩下2%的人口了。
And you know, that's the same as America!
美國現在也是這樣。
America had many, many indigenous people before too, but today, only about 2%
of Americans are Native Americans.
他們以前也有很多、很多原住民,但現在大約只有2%的人口是美國原住民。
And now, a Native American has gone into space!
現在,一位美國原住民去了外太空。
Her name is Nicole. Nicole is the commander of the spaceship! She's the boss!
她叫Nicole,是這一艘太空船的指揮官!
It's really great, because it helps other Native Americans know that, one
day, they might be able to go into space too!
這件事情讓其他的原住民知道,有一天他們也會有機會去外太空!
Maybe an indigenous Taiwanese person will also go into space one day! That
would be cool, right?

The Oldest Meal Ever
Do you like to eat leftovers? 你喜歡吃剩菜嗎?
Maybe your dad made dinner yesterday and put it in the fridge. Or maybe you
have eaten a meal from two days ago, or even three days ago.
你可能吃過冰箱裡面昨天的晚餐,甚至兩三天前的飯菜。
What about a meal from seventy thousand years ago?
但你吃過七萬年前的飯菜嗎?
In fact, scientists recently found a meal like that. They discovered it in a
cave in Iraq, and they say it's the oldest cooked meal they've ever found.
科學家最近在伊拉克的洞穴裡面找到全世界最古老的餐食。
The scientists studied the meal, to learn what food people cooked so long
ago. They found the meal was made of seeds.
他們研究了這頓飯,發現是用植物的種子做的。
How was it cooked? The people who made it used rocks to mash the seeds. Then,
they boiled the seeds in water to make a pancake.
怎麼做的呢?古人用石頭把種子碾碎,再拿去煮,做成煎餅。
Was that pancake good? To find out, the scientists tried to make the same
meal. They took seeds from near the cave and used the same recipe.
那個煎餅好吃嗎?科學家用洞穴附近的種子做了一樣的料理。
In the end, their meal was delicious! It tasted like nuts. The only problem?
It was hard to chew!
結果很好吃!味道像是堅果,但是很難咬!
Before this discovery, we had no idea the art of cooking was so old.
Now that we've found the oldest meal ever, we have to ask... what else did
people know seventy thousand years ago?

Ancient Bows and Arrows Found
Let's pretend… It is 50,000 years ago. You are in Europe. You are a hunter!
You are looking for food. You want to catch a deer. You need meat for your
family.
想像一下你是五萬年前的歐洲獵人,想要獵一頭鹿來餵飽家人。
But deer are fast! What can you do? Throw a rock? No, that wouldn't work.
但是鹿跑得飛快,丟石頭也沒用,怎麼辦呢?
Ah! How about a bow and arrow? That would work, right?
用弓箭怎麼樣?
Bows and arrows are amazing. They are strong!
You can shoot arrows super far! Bows and arrows are perfect for hunters.
Scientists think bows and arrows were used a long, long time ago. But how
long ago?
科學家認為人類很久以前就在用弓箭。到底是多久以前呢?
Well, some arrowheads in Europe are older than 50,000 years old!
歐洲找到有五萬年歷史的箭頭。
That was a long time ago! But wait! Scientists also think bows and arrows are
even older. People used them in Africa first!
Scientists think people from Africa took bows and arrows to Europe.
科學家認為弓箭在更早以前就有了,是非洲人先開始用,再帶到歐洲去的。
And yes, people used bows and arrows to fight too. All over the world, they
used bows and arrows for hundreds and hundreds of years… until there were
guns.

Taiwan Can Sing!
Oh, hello, everyone! Do you like to sing? Do you sing in a group at school?
That group is a choir. Taiwan has many great choirs!
你喜歡唱歌嗎?你知道台灣有很多很棒的合唱團嗎?
The Bao Lai Junior High School Choir is from Kaohsiung. The choir has many
indigenous Bunun children. It has students from Jianshan and Laonong
Elementary Schools and the Nibun Chorus. There are one hundred twenty
students in the choir!
高雄的寶來國中合唱團有120個團員,有尼布恩合唱團的團員,還有建山國小跟荖濃國小的小朋友,他們很多都來自布農族。
This year, the singers sang one song again and again. They danced that one
song again and again. They sang and danced on Saturdays and Sundays. They
sang and danced on holidays and hot days.
週末和假日他們都沒有休息,一直練習。
They sang Pasibutbut. It's a very important Bunun song. It's beautiful. But
it's not easy. It's a long song with eight parts. Why did the choir want this
song? 布農族的八部合音很優美但不好唱。
They wanted the world to see a beautiful part of Taiwan!
他們想讓世界看到台灣美麗的一面。
The choir got on a plane. They went to the World Choir Games. Choirs from
forty-six countries came. The Bao Lai Choir sang and danced Pasibutbut there.
他們坐上飛機參加世界合唱大會,準備表演八部合音。
The world saw Taiwan. And the choir won a gold medal! 他們獲得金牌!

Museum to Give Back Important Headdress
Indigenous people are the first to live in a place. Taiwan has many
Indigenous groups: Amis people, Paiwan people, Atayal people, and others.
原住民指的是最開始定居在一個地方的族群。台灣有很多原住民族,像是阿美族、排灣族、泰雅族等等。
Indigenous groups live all over the world. They have sacred traditions and
beliefs. These are very, very important things the groups do and think.
世界各地都有原住民。他們有神聖的傳統跟信仰,這對他們做事情或是思考的方式非常重要。
They have sacred things. Some are headdresses. These are beautiful head
coverings. They have important meanings.
他們有神聖的東西,例如頭飾,也就是戴在頭上的美麗裝飾,這些都有重要的意義。
The Siksika Nation is an Indigenous group in Canada. About one hundred thirty
years ago, a man from the UK took a sacred headdress from them. Then he took
it back to the UK. It was in a museum there for more than one hundred years.
西格西卡人是加拿大原住民。130年前,一名英國男子拿走族人的頭飾,帶回英國,收藏在博物館裡超過100年。
The Siksika headdress has eagle and hawk feathers. It has buffalo horns and
porcupine quills. Long ago, an important woman wore it to important religious
events.
這個頭飾有老鷹羽毛、水牛角跟豪豬的刺。很久以前,只有身分重要的女性才能穿戴去宗教場合。
Now the Siksika Nation wants it back!
現在西格西卡人想把它拿回來。
The museum is sorry they had the headdress. They know it's very important.
They're giving it back to the Siksika Nation next year.
博物館覺得很抱歉擁有這個頭飾,他們明白它的重要性,也會在明年歸還給西格西卡人。
Museums everywhere have sacred things. Let's hope these sacred things go home
