New Record for Yushan's Latest First Snowfall
Every year, we all get excited about snow on Taiwan's mountains.
It's fun to see photos and videos of everything covered in white.
Many people like to go up the mountains to enjoy the snow.
They build snowmen, and write words in the snow.
But something was a little different this season.
Yushan (玉山) got its first snow of the season last week.
The snow fell from 7:05am until 7:15am.
Experts say strong wind and wet air moved in from the west.
And this led to low temperatures of around minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
And the cold wet air was perfect for snow!
But this was the first time it snowed on Yushan this season...
That means there was no snowfall on Yushan from December to February, all
through winter!
This is the latest first-snow on the mountain in 80 years.
The average temperature on Yushan this winter was 3.03 degrees.
That's the third highest in history.

A Monet Made of Lego
French painter Claude Monet had many famous paintings.
Some of the most famous Monet paintings are his water lilies.
Around 100 years ago, the artist painted the lilies in the pond at his home
near Paris.
Monet made around 250 water lily paintings.
And now an artist has recreated (重現) these paintings.
But he didn't use paint.
This artist used Legos!
This Lego artwork is made by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
The artwork is 15 meters long.
Ai Weiwei used 650,000 Lego blocks!
And he used 22 different colors.
The art is full of bright blue, green, and orange.
But there is something a little different about Ai Weiwei's water lily
artwork.
On one side of the colorful artwork, there is a patch (一塊、一區) of dark
Legos.
The dark Legos represent a door.
It's the door of an underground cave that he and his father lived in back in
China.
They had to live in the cave because his father did not agree with the
government at the time.
They had to live in exile
Ai Weiwei's childhood, and other experiences are a big part of his art.
He often uses his artwork to make people think about politics (政治), and
human rights.
Ai Weiwei's Lego artwork will be shown at London's Design Museum next month.

Hey hey hey, get ready for a new episode of... News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Paz Bueno.
Today's stories...
A helicopter saves a hiker in Taitung, a new space mission leaves for
Jupiter, and Australians vote to change their constitution.
Let's hear all about it!
________________________________
Helicopter Saves Hiker in Taitung County
Hiking (健行) is fun.
People hike into the mountains to get fresh air and exercise.
But hiking can be dangerous, too.
Hikers (健行的人) need to prepare (做準備) before they go into the mountains.
Even if they prepare, there might still be an accident (意外).
The hiker might fall down and get hurt.
And if they are alone, there will be trouble (大麻煩).
So, what happens if a hiker is alone (獨自一個人) when they get hurt?
If they are lucky, a helicopter (直升機) will come save them.
That's what happened recently in Taitung County (台東縣).
A hiker was deep in the mountains when he hurt his knee.
He was hurt so badly, he couldn't even walk.
Fortunately, his phone had service.
He called the fire department, and they sent a search-and-rescue team
The team searched (搜尋) for two days to find the hurt hiker.
When they found him, they called a helicopter to come pick him up.
The area was foggy (有霧), so it was not easy for the helicopter to land.
Finally, the helicopter found a place to come down (降落的地方).
It picked the hiker up and took him to the hospital in Taitung City.
Thanks to the search-and-rescue team, and the helicopter crew, the hiker will
live to hike another day.

A Mission to Find Alien Life on Jupiter's Moons
Our solar system (太陽系) has one sun and eight planets (行星).
What's the biggest planet?
Is it Earth?
Nope! The biggest planet is Jupiter (木星).
And just like Earth has a moon, Jupiter also has moons.
In fact, Jupiter has almost one hundred moons.
Jupiter is such a big planet, and it has so many moons, that we have to
ask... does anything live there?
We don't know!
But recently, we have sent a new mission (新的任務) to search for life (生物)
on Jupiter's moons.
The mission is called the "Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer", or "JUICE" for short.
The JUICE mission will visit three of Jupiter's biggest moons.
We already know there is water on these moons.
Scientists think these moons might have oceans of water (水的海洋), like we
have on Earth.
And where there is water, there may be life.
That's why the JUICE mission is going to Jupiter's moons to search for life.
Even though it has already left, the JUICE mission still won't arrive at
Jupiter for eight more years.
So, the year 2031 might be the year we find life in space.

Australians to Vote on 'Indigenous Voice'
Australia (澳大利亞) is a big country with a lot of people.
Australians (澳洲人) are proud of their country and their history.
Most Australians belong to (屬於) families that came to Australia from Europe
more than one hundred years ago.
But, there is another group of Australians, too.
Indigenous people (澳洲原住民) have been living in Australia for tens of
thousands of years (好幾萬年).
They have lived in Australia far longer than anybody else.
Indigenous Australians have their own language (自己的語言) and culture
They also have special songs, dances, and music.
These are some of the oldest traditions (傳統) in the world!
That's why it is strange that Australia's highest law does not say anything
about Indigenous people.
It's true! Australia's Constitution (憲法), the most important law in
Australia, does not talk about them at all.
That's not good!
It means Australia's laws don't really work for Indigenous people.
But now, many people in Australia want to change this.
They want to change the Constitution (修改憲法), to give Indigenous people a
voice (聲音).
What does that mean?
This new law will make a group (機構) called "The Indigenous Voice"
That group will be able to work together with Australia's government, to make
new laws for the country.
This group will give Indigenous people a way to decide how laws will work in
Australia.
Many people like this idea, but first they need to vote on it (投票).
At the end of this year, Australians will vote on the Indigenous Voice.
If the vote is successful (成功), Australia's Indigenous people will finally
get a say in government.

Same-Sex Couples Can Jointly Adopt
Taiwan is Asia's leading country for LGBT rights (權益).
LGBT stands for people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.
These are people who may love someone of the same gender (性別) or feel they
are a different gender from the one they were born as.
In 2019, Taiwan became the first place in Asia to allow same-sex (同性)
couples to get married.
There are laws to protect people from being treated badly because of who they
love or how they feel about their gender.
There's even a special day when people march in the streets to celebrate love
and diversity (多元文化), called the Pride Parade (同志遊行).
On May 16th, the Legislative Yuan (立法院) changed a rule to help same-sex
couples.
Before, these couples could only adopt their spouse's child if it was their
biological child.
But now, these couples can also adopt a child together.
Everyone is saying it's a fair thing to do because it's important that all
kinds of families can take care of children.
People who care about the rights of children and LGBT people are really happy
about this change.
Love is love, no matter who you are.

Mysterious Pasta in the Woods
Picture this (想像一下): You're walking in the woods, and guess what you
find?
Piles and piles of pasta!
This happened near a river in the US city of Old Bridge last month.
No one knew how the pasta got there.
And when the city cleaned it up, they found there were 500 pounds of noodles
Pictures of the pasta were posted on Facebook, and many people found it
funny.
A netizen (網友) joked that cleaning it up was "Mission Im-pasta-ble"
And another joked, "Lead suspect (主要嫌疑人) is a guy named Al Dente."
"Al Dente"是一個義大利詞語,用來形容煮得恰到好處、口感稍硬的義大利麵。
It turns out the suspect was not a guy named Al Dente, but a man who wanted
to clean out his pantry
Neighbors say the city doesn't have bulk garbage pickup
which is a big problem.
The man didn't know how else to throw away all the pasta he had.
The incident brought a lot of attention (吸引很多注意) to the town's garbage
problem.
The residents hope city authorities can provide better trash pickup services
after this.

How Goats are Saving Forests in Chile
Forest fires are becoming more and more common as we deal with the climate
crisis.
They hurt the trees and plants, animals that live in the woods lose their
homes, and the smoke harms our earth.
It's important to know how we can prevent (防止) forest fires.
In a city in Chile named Santa Juana, there's a team of helpers that help
protect the forest from dangerous fires.
And they're goats (山羊)!
These goats have already helped to save a forest park called Bosques de
Chacay from a big fire that happened in February.
But thanks to the goats, the park was safe!
The goats eat the dry plants that can catch fire easily during the hot
summer.
They also help the soil stay healthy with their poop.
A forestry engineer (林業工程師) says, "These animals can help us a lot."
He thinks more people should use goats to eat the dry plants that can catch
fire.

Taiwan Pokemon Champion Takes World Stage
An eleven-year-old prodigy (神童) battled his way to become the first-ever
Pokemon Trading Card Game champion for Taiwan!
Yen Shao-tong (顏紹同) recently won the Pokemon World Championships
The event took place in Yokohama, Japan
The stage was set for an intense showdown (激烈對決) between Yen and his
Brazilian opponent (巴西對手), Gabriel Borges Torres.
Both players were accompanied by translators (翻譯) to help check the effects
and abilities of the Pokemon cards.
Each player uses cards in their native languages (母語).
Now, let's dive into the excitement of the match:
Yen's chosen deck was known as the Lost Zone deck
It was a daring bid against Torres' more stable deck, which centered on
powerful Pokemon such as Arceus, Duraludon, and Umbreon.
In the second round, Yen stacked enough energy cards to discard and unleash
his legendary Pokemon Kyogre's Aqua Storm.
The result?
A resounding 2-0 victory, making Yen the champ of the Pokemon TCG Juniors
division!
It's Taiwan's first championship in this category.
The last time Taiwan tasted victory was in 2019 when 10-year-old Wu Pi (吳比)
won the Video Game Championship

NASA Reconnects with Lost Space Explorer
And now, for an out-of-this-world story about the Voyager 2 space probe
It's like a robot explorer that's been traveling in space for 46 years!
So, what's new with Voyager 2?
Last month, NASA lost contact (失去聯絡) with this amazing spacecraft.
Something went a bit wrong when they sent a command to Voyager 2, making it
turn its antenna away from Earth by just 2 degrees.
Without its antenna (天線) pointing at Earth, Voyager 2 couldn't hear
commands from NASA or send messages back.
But the scientists didn't give up!
They used a huge antenna at the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex in
Australia to send a "shout" to Voyager 2.
Like shouting to a friend who's really, really far away!
It took 18.5 hours for the command to reach Voyager, and another 18.5 hours
to know if it worked.
Finally, at 12:29 a.m. on August 4th, Voyager 2 started sending information
back to Earth.
The spacecraft is now operating as it should (正常運作) and is continuing its
incredible journey in deep space.
It's more than 20 billion kilometers from Earth
If this long-shot attempt hadn't worked,
2 had a plan to fix itself in October, but luckily, NASA's big shout got
through.
Voyager 2 was launched in 1977, and it's still going strong
It's like an old explorer that keeps on discovering new things about space.
This Voyager is part of NASA's longest-running space program, and it's
helping us learn more about what's out there beyond our planet.

Tasty Tidbit
Speaking of space…
As of this year, 2023, only 12 people have ever been to the moon... but a lot
of THINGS have been to the moon.
And since it's hard to take them back to Earth... a lot of them are still out
there on the moon right now!
Most of these things are old science machines and tools...
But there are also flags from different countries, bags with personal items
and memories, and footprints on the ground...
And, well, even astronauts have to use the toilet, so they left some toilet
stuff there, too!
Altogether, scientists say there were around 800 things left on the moon, as
of the year 2019. I wonder how many of them will ever come back to Earth?

Taiwan on a Journey to Protect Pangolins
Have you seen a pangolin before?
It's a shy, ant-eating mammal.
Pangolins live in parts of Asia and Africa.
They have scales (鱗片) over most of their body.
When they are in danger, pangolins will often curl (捲曲) into a ball.
When they do that, their hard scales help keep them safe.
Through the last century, Taiwan was often a dangerous place for pangolins.
Pangolins were sometimes hunted for their meat and scales.
People found ways to use pangolin leather
This led to large-scale (大規模的) hunting of pangolins.
As many as 5,000 pangolin hides (毛皮) were sold to other countries every
month.
This made the wild pangolin population drop very quickly.
In 1989, Taiwan passed laws to stop the hunting and sale of endangered
animals.
And since then, Taiwan has been working hard to better protect pangolins.
Now, many experts believe Taiwan may have the highest population density
(密度) of pangolins in the world.
There are around 20,000 pangolins in Taiwan.
Some experts say Taiwan's mountain forests are a good home for pangolins.
There are lots of decaying (腐爛) leaves on the forest floor.
And lots of ants and termites live among those leaves.
This makes the forests a perfect habitat (棲息地) for pangolins.
But pangolins still face many dangers.
They are threatened by cars, animal traps, stray dogs, and poachers.
Next time you take a trip in the mountains, keep an eye out for these gentle
creatures.

An Old-fashioned Way to Deal with ChatGPT
Artificial intelligence is all the rage (風靡) nowadays.
People are using it for almost everything.
Ever since OpenAI's ChatGPT came to the market, it took the world by storm.
Some people are using it to make their jobs easier, from answering questions,
to creating art.
But one group of people may have a different opinion.
Educators are still trying to figure out what to do about ChatGPT.
Since it was introduced to the world, teachers, administrators and students
have debated (爭論) AI's role in education.
Some are exploring ways of integrating (融合) ChatGPT to make it a tool for
education.
Others chose to ban students from using it.
There are good reasons that educators are worried about AI.
Researchers have put the program to the test and it passed numerous exams.
It aced the SAT and GRE.
It also passed the US medical licensing exam.
More and more students are using it for schoolwork.
This led many college professors to think about their lesson plans for the
future.
Some professors say they are planning to go back to handwritten assignments
and oral exams.
This might avoid students using AI to generate essays for papers.
One professor says students should be able to summarize (總結) information
and say it in their own words.
On the other hand, some educators are using AI in their work.
They use it to make worksheets and quiz questions, which saves them a lot of
time.
Whether you think it's a danger or a tool, it looks like AI isn't going to go
away anytime soon.

And now for today's Tasty Tidbit...
Cleaning up dust in the house is a daily job. Do you ever wonder where all
that dust comes from?
Scientists say a lot of that dust is dead skin cells. According to some
scientists, we shed 200 million skin cells every hour! And if we're sitting
in our house, it makes sense that's where our skin cells go too.
Of course there's lots of other things in that dust too, like fibers, hair,
