Police Install VR Training Systems
Virtual reality, or VR, is a technology (科技) that lets you feel like you're
in a different world.
You wear a headset with a screen in front of your eyes, and you can see a
computer-generated environment.
The image on the screen (螢幕上的畫面) changes when you move your head to
look around.
It can be used for playing video games, designing 3D models, creating art…
And even training (訓練) doctors, pilots, and police!
The National Police Agency (NPA) has installed VR police training systems for
the first time.
The systems were installed (安裝) at the New Taipei, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, and
Chiayi County police departments.
Police will also use them at the Railway Police Bureau, Taiwan Police
College, and the First Police Special Corps 6th Corps.
The VR police training system cost around $45 million NT.
It offers new training features (功能).
Users have to wear headsets (頭戴式裝置), and officers are trained through
simulations (模擬).
The system can create simulations of different settings (場景), like KTV bars
or train stations.
This can help officers prepare for all kinds of scenarios (情境).
The NPA says it plans to buy more VR training systems.
That way, other police departments and institutions can help make the
training more realistic (更真實).
And improve police officers' skills to keep us safe.

Dolphins 'Shout' to Get Heard over Noise Pollution
Did you know that humans are not the only species that "speak" to each other?
Many animals communicate (溝通) with each other in different ways.
They can make sounds to show they are happy, hungry, or in danger.
Dolphins are intelligent marine mammals that use a complex communication
system.
They are very social animals (善於社交的動物), and live in groups called pods.
Their communication lets them cooperate (合作), play, and solve problems
together.
They can whistle to identify each other (識別彼此), like how we use names…
And they use clicks for echolocation (迴聲定位), using sound waves to find
food or know where they are.
Unfortunately, ocean noise pollution (海洋噪音污染) is making it hard for
dolphins to communicate with each other.
Human activity, like shipping, oil, and gas exploration, and construction,
has increased a lot in recent years.
That means underwater sound levels (水下聲級) are also increasing.
Scientists trained two dolphins and studied them in a noisy environment
They found that the dolphins started whistling two times louder and for a
longer time to communicate.
The study shows that ocean noise pollution greatly affects the lives of
marine mammals.

9-Year-Old Finds Ancient Shark Tooth
When I go to the beach, I look for seashells (貝殼) or pretty rocks to bring
home.
I feel really lucky and excited (感到幸運和興奮) when I can find something.
9-year-old Molly from Maryland, USA, found something even more exciting than
seashells or rocks.
It was an ancient fossil
Molly and her family are all big fossil enthusiasts (愛好者), and her dad
looked for fossils at the beach since he was a kid.
In fact, she and her sister always say they want to go find shark teeth like
professionals (專業人)!
So, when she got an insulated chest wader (保暖涉水褲) for Christmas, the
family went to the beach the next morning.
Molly was visiting the beach with her family on Christmas Day.
She told her mom she was "looking for a Meg" - that is, a Megalodon tooth!
The Megalodon (巨齒鯊) was the largest shark of all time.
It lived up to 3.6 million years ago!
They had really huge teeth, with each one being over 18 centimeters long.
Molly always dreamed of finding a Megalodon tooth.
And she did!
Imagine how excited she was to find one that day!
Her family took the tooth to a marine museum.
The museum's paleontologists (古生物學家) confirmed the tooth came from a
"Meg".
They congratulated her as a "future paleontologist"!

(佔三分之一以上) of the seats on city and county councils.
The percentage (比例) of female judges and members of Taiwan's Control Yuan

Mexico to Power Up First Phase of Huge Solar Project in April!
Energy has been a hot button topic lately
Because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, global energy costs have gone up.
Many countries around the world are thinking of solutions.
And Mexico has a plan that kicks off (開始) in April.
Mexico is going to start using more renewable energy (再生能源), specifically
solar energy (特別是太陽能).
Solar energy is energy that comes from the sun.
The sun gives off (散發) light and heat, and we can use that energy to power
(提供動力) things like our homes, schools, and even cars.
Solar panels (太陽能板) collect that energy, and then convert (轉化) the
energy into electricity we can use.
Mexico's state-owned electric company (電力公司) is building a huge solar
project.
It will be able to make enough energy to power 500,000 homes.
Rows (一排排) of solar panels will cover 5,000 acres of land.
In April, the first 120 megawatts (120 百萬瓦電力) of the project will be
A top Mexican official says his country is trying to change its focus and
move towards renewable energy faster.

Many customers were worried.
The person said he was doing a TikTok challenge.

India's 'Cow Hug Day'
India has a long history and unique culture.
There are many religions in India.
And Hindu (印度教) is a religion that many people in India follow.
For people who follow Hindu, cows are sacred (神聖).
They also believe in respect for all animals.
In fact, the government came up with an idea for a "Cow Hug Day".
On February 6th, the government declared Feb 14th as "Cow Hug Day".
The government wanted to encourage people to think about Hindu traditions.
But this didn't work exactly the way they wanted.
Some people did try to hug cows.
But sometimes, the cows did not want to be hugged.
A news anchor (新聞主播) was filmed trying to hug cows.
But all the cows ran away from him.
Some people are not sure if "Cow Hug Day" is a good idea.

Giant Penguin Fossil Found in New Zealand
Penguins are amazing animals.
They do not fly.
When they move on land, they waddle
When they move in water, they swim like torpedoes (魚雷).
But what if a penguin is as big as a person?
Scientists in New Zealand found a fossil of a giant penguin.
This giant penguin lived 50 million years ago.
The scientists believe the penguin was as tall as an adult.
It grew to 177 centimeters tall.
And it weighed more than 100 kilograms!
Emperor penguins are the biggest penguins alive today.
They can weigh up to 45 kilograms.
The scientists believe giant penguins lived in Australia and New Zealand.
They lived during the time after dinosaurs went extinct (滅絕).
The penguin's large body size helped it stay warm in cold water.
And being so big would help them stay safe from predators (掠食者).
So, don't be surprised if fossils of giant animals continue to be discovered.

Teacher Makes Map for Pedestrians
Being out on the road can be hard in Taiwan.
There have been some news stories about roads being not safe for pedestrians
A high school teacher wanted to help.
Han Chung-mei made a special map.
She did this with help from engineers (工程師), and hundreds of volunteers
The map is called "commusidewalk".
Over 700 volunteers took photos of streets all around Taiwan.
They took thousands of photos.
They upload the photo and add the time and location.
The photos show if there is a place on that street for people to walk safely.
A green spot means the place to walk is very safe.
A red spot means the street is very dangerous, and there is no safe place to
walk.
Right now, there is more information on roads in major cities than small
towns.
Han Chung-mei encourages users to add more photos and information.
She hopes that this map can urge (催促) the government to improve road safety
conditions, and bring changes to pedestrian safety in the country

Venice Canals Run Dry
The romantic city of Venice has always been a tourist attraction.
Millions of tourists flock to the famous "City of Water" to experience the
famous canals and gondolas
However, tourists who visit Venice this winter might be disappointed.
Italy is facing another drought.
The country has had weeks of dry winter weather.
The lack (缺少) of water is drying up the famous canals in Venice.
The water level is so low in some places that the boats can't even float.
This winter, the Alps (阿爾卑斯山) got less than half of its normal snowfall.
Other parts of the country also haven't had much rain.
This caused the "Po", Italy's longest river, to have 61% less water than
normal at this time of the year.
The river runs from the Alps to the Adriatic.
It brings water for a third of Italy's agricultural production (農業).
An Italian expert said that the country is in a water deficit (缺乏).
He says the deficit has been building up since the winter of 2020.
He thinks Italy needs 50 days of rain to solve the problem.

2,400-year-old Flush Toilet Discovered in China
Many people say the flush toilet (沖水馬桶) is the greatest invention of all
time.
Otherwise, we would still be using a bucket (水桶).
No one knows who first used water to flush toilets.
But old drainage systems (排水系統) have been found in many ancient
civilizations around the world.
Last summer, archeologists (考古學家) in China found what may be the world's
oldest flush toilet.
The research team was digging among the ancient palace ruins in the city of
Xi'an.
The palace was used from the Qin dynasty to the Han dynasty.
The researcher described the toilet as a "luxury object" (奢侈品).
It was located inside the palace.
It had a pipe leading to an outdoor pit
It doesn't have a water tank like modern toilets.
So servants (僕人) probably poured water into the toilet bowl every time it
was used.
It may have been used by high-ranking officials or royals.
Most people thought a man named John Harington invented the flush toilet in
the 16th century.
But now, that may change.
Who knows, ancient civilizations might be more advanced than we think.

"Modern-day Slavery" and the Rechargeable Battery
Batteries are very important in the modern world.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (鋰電池) are especially important.
They power many electronics that we use every day.
Most smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles use these batteries.
But making lithium-ion batteries is not easy.
Cobalt (鈷) is used to make these batteries.
Cobalt is collected through mining.
The country with the most cobalt is the Democratic Republic of Congo
In fact, the DRC has more cobalt than the rest of the world combined (合併).
Last year, 70 percent of the world's cobalt came from the DRC.
And cobalt is in demand (有高度需求) all over the world.
In the DRC, a lot of cobalt mining is done by "artisanal (手工)" miners.
These miners use their hands and simple tools to get the cobalt.
And they do this for very little money.
These miners do this work because they don't have other work opportunities
For many, this is the only way to make money.
Many people have been pushing the DRC government to make this work better and
safer.
The government has started to assign (分配) pieces of land for cobalt mining.
And many companies are starting to use better tools and equipment.
They are also training their miners.
Due to huge demand for lithium-ion batteries, cobalt mining will be important
for a long time yet.

A Future without Organ Transplants
Organ transplants help save lives.
A lot of people around the world need organ transplants.
But there are usually less people willing to donate (捐贈).
And some organs can only be donated after a person has died.
Now, we may be close to no longer needing organ transplants.
Scientists may be able to MAKE organs soon.
They say stem cell technology has proven to be promising
Studies show it is possible to grow organs in a lab with stem cells.
Another technique, called 3D bioprinting (生物列印), can also be used to make
artificial organs.
So far, scientists have successfully printed several organs.
They have made a thyroid gland (甲狀腺) and tibia (脛骨) replacement.
They are not sure when they will be able to make an organ that fully works.
But the scientists believe they can do it in the next decade.
