Taiwan and the Worldwide Drought
2022 has been a very challenging year for climates all over the world, Taiwan
included.
News of country-wide droughts have been heard from all over the world,
including the U.S., China, and many countries in Europe.
And at first (最開始), Taiwan began this year with plentiful rainfall
(豐沛的降雨), in the rainy season between May and June.
But by late August, the water in many of Taiwan's reservoirs (水庫) was very
low.
That's because rainfall (降雨) from July to August this year has been 60%
less than average.
Some of the reservoirs even dropped under 50% of the water storage capacity
Many reservoirs in northern Taiwan had already decided to save water, too, by
providing less water pressure (水壓) to homes.
Luckily (幸好), Typhoon Hinnamnor (颱風軒嵐諾) came just in time!
Typhoon Hinnamnor brought lots of water to reservoirs all over the country.
And through the cooperation of Taiwan's homes and water providers (水公司),
the country's water levels were finally able to recover (恢復).
Who knows how much worse things would have gotten if Typhoon Hinnamnor had
decided to bypass Taiwan?

Secret Schools for Afghan Women
Since the U.S. military left Afghanistan, the majority of Afghan girls
haven't been to school in over a year.
The U.S. military (美軍) left Afghanistan on August 30th, 2021, after 20
years of war (戰爭).
But that also left the country to the Taliban (塔利班), who now rule
And according to Taliban tradition, many women are not allowed to have an
education!
That means many women and girls in Afghanistan have been banned (禁止) from
going to school.
In light of so much oppression (壓制), many people started to look for their
own ways of educating young women.
One such person is Sodaba Nazhand, who started an informal school with her
friends in Kabul (喀布爾), Afghanistan's capital (首都).
Sodaba and her friends secretly teach English, math, and science to girls and
young women.
Sodaba says they want to use education as a way to protest (反抗) against the
Taliban.
She says they are teaching girls and young women to stand up for their rights
Going to school can be a lot of hard work... but not everyone has the chance
to learn new things every day.
So try to remember how lucky you are, to be getting an education!

How Many Kinds of 'Vitamin B' Are There?
"Vitamin B" can be an important vitamin to help people focus... but which
kind is best?
There are a total of 8 different kinds of vitamin B, and they can each help
with different bodily functions
To improve energy levels, many people take vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B7.
These can help with metabolism (代謝), and are also found in nuts, eggs, and
milk.
Meanwhile, vitamin B1, B3, B6, and B12 can help with protecting the nervous
These vitamins can be found in chicken, pig liver, and also most kinds of
fish.
There is also one more category of vitamin B, which helps keep red blood
cells healthy.
They are vitamins B6, B9, B12, and they are found in citrus fruits
(柑橘類水果), like oranges, grapefruit, and lemons, and also in spinach and
yogurt.
So vitamin B can be easily found in many of the foods we have for breakfast,
lunch, or dinner!
However, it's important to remember that it doesn't help to take more than
one vitamin B pill per day.
That's because our bodies can only digest and absorb (消化並吸收) a little
bit.
So before you take any vitamins, ask your parents and your doctor which ones
can help your body the most.
And remember, nothing is better than a well-balanced diet, so no matter which
vitamins you take, make sure to eat healthy food every day!

Taiwan Tea Wins Big at UK Competition
Tea is a big part of culture in the United Kingdom.
Tea time is not just tea time.
There's "elevenses", that's tea served at around 11 o'clock in the morning.
There's "afternoon tea", that's tea with sandwiches and maybe cakes.
And there's "high tea", that's tea with a hot meal after work.
Some even say the British are "tea people".
And now, a tea made right here in Taiwan has won a big British award.
The tea, called "Oriental Beauty Tea 1" was awarded 3 stars in the Great
Taste Awards.
Three stars means something is "extraordinarily (格外的、絕頂的) tasty food".
How hard is it to get three stars?
Only 2 percent of the foods and drinks that enter the competition get 3 stars.
"Oriental Beauty Tea 1" is made by Taiwan tea maker Jacky Chang.
He makes his tea in Miaoli County.
Jacky says to make "Oriental Beauty Tea 1", he had to do something different.
Taiwan had a lot of rainy weather this year.
And Jacky had to pick his tea leaves at a different time.
Then he had to be very careful when roasting the tea leaves.
The humidity and temperature had to be carefully controlled.
Jacky
Jacky says he is going to rename the tea "Queen's Garden".
He says the name is in honor of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

Two-headed Turtle Turns 25
A turtle is turning 25 years old... twice.
How can you turn 25 years old two times?
Well, this turtle has two heads!
Janus the turtle also has two hearts.
He has two pairs of lungs (肺).
Janus was born at the Geneva Natural History Museum, in Switzerland.
The museum has a team of people who take care of him.
Every day, they feed Janus organic salad.
Janus also gets daily massages (按摩).
And he takes baths in green tea and chamomile (甘菊).
The people who take care of him say he has two very different personalities
They say Janus' right head is more curious (好奇).
And his left head loves to eat.
One head's favorite food is endives (苦苣).
And the other head's favorite food is carrots.
Janus would not survive long in the wild.
That's because he cannot pull his head into his shell when he is in danger.
But luckily, he lives at the museum.
And the people there take very good care of him.
Now Janus is turning 25 years old.
The museum thinks he might be the world's oldest two-headed turtle.

How Soon Might Taiwan See its First Climate Refugees?
Many of us have heard of the dangers of climate change and the risks that
many people living in coastal areas (沿海地帶) are facing.
However, did you know that there are places in Taiwan that are already
suffering from rising sea levels caused by climate change?
Yunlin County's Tai-zi Village (雲林縣台子村) has just built a new seawall
(海塘) earlier this year to prevent the increasing number of large waves that
affect the coastal village.
Chien Lien-kwei (簡連貴), a professor at the National Ocean University
(國立海洋大學) has been studying Taiwan's coastlines for many years.
He says the Yunlin coastline's ocean levels have risen from 9 to 22
centimeters since 2017.
Professor Chien strongly advises (建議) residents of Tai-zi to make plans to
leave the coastal area as soon as possible.
However, it's not just Tai-zi that is facing these problems.
There are many farming and fishing communities along the Western coast of
Taiwan, and many of them face similar threats to their lifestyle.
And not only are sea levels rising, but also the land where people can live
is sinking (下沉).
One can only imagine the damage that is done when a large wave crashes over
the seawall and floods the homes of people living along the coastline.

EU plans to ban all products made by forced labor
Earlier in September 2022, the European Commission (歐盟委員會) made a
proposal to ban any goods that are made with forced labor.
The goal for passing this law is to keep products made with forced labor from
entering any of the 27 countries of the European Union.
The law will target the main factors in the global supply chain, including
importers, manufacturers, producers and product suppliers.
The EU executive commented, "This law can be applied to any stage in the
production of a product, all the way from harvesting the raw material to the
final assembly or manufacturing, even to any related processing that's
related to the products."
When this law is passed and is applied to all 27 EU countries, the
governments will have the power to block (擋) products from entering each
country's market and even withdraw (撤回) products that are proven to have
been made with forced labor.
National authorities will have to provide evidence (證據) of forced labor
before taking any actions.

Hope for trash; turning cardboard lunch boxes into electricity
Ever since the coronavirus pandemic started in late 2019, our lifestyles have
all changed drastically.
Even the way we get our daily meals has changed!
Food Panda and UberEats have become the number one choice for many people to
order food.
Because of this change, the amount of waste (垃圾) that's produced from
ordering food delivery has skyrocketed (飆升) in the past two to three years.
Taiwan's biggest paper production company Cheng Loong Corporation (正隆) has
been fighting to deal with the increasing amount of paper waste.
Although Cheng Loong might not be a household name (家喻戶曉的名字), their
products have been used by almost every person in Taiwan, including tissues,
toilet paper and food boxes.
The company has invested billions of dollars to build sustainable solutions.
Cheng Loong has come up with a way to filter the non-recyclable waste from
the recycling process and then turn those into small, easy-to-use fuel
pellets.
Then, these fuel pellets are used at the new facility in Zhubei to help with
drying the paper pulp (紙糊).
This new facility cost Cheng Loong around 1.7 billion NT (17億元) to build.
The company is already using the fuel pellets for around 50% of all its
energy needs, replacing coal and decreasing CO2 emissions
Cheng Loong aims to process all waste material at this new facility and has
goals to reduce the amount of coal it uses every year by about 30,000 tons in
the near future.

A Statue for Being Kind
There are many statues (雕像) around the world.
Most of them are statues of famous people, like kings, queens, and presidents.
But there is a new statue in the U.K. that honors (尊敬 ) a woman for being
kind.
The woman's name is Jo Newby, and she has been a volunteer for 20 years.
During that time as a volunteer, she fostered 92 children.
But she's not just a foster mom.
Jo Newby also started a special football club (足球俱樂部) in her town.
All children are welcome, including those who have disabilities
Local coaches say the club is important.
They say there is no other program like it in the area where they live.
The new statue is four meters tall, and is made with recycled material
The statue shows Jo holding football shoes in one hand.
And in the other hand, she holds 92 balloons to symbolize (代表) all her
foster children.
Jo doesn't think she has done anything to deserve (該得到) the statue.
She says all she thinks about is the children she helps, and making sure they
feel happy, included (被接受) and safe.
She also believes that any act of kindness makes a difference.

Scientists Find Ancient Jewelry that Looks New
An archaeologist is a scientist that studies history by looking for, and
discovering antiques and artifacts
To do this, they have to travel to faraway places
So when they finally find things that show them how people lived hundreds of
years ago, they get very excited.
Archaeologists in Sweden made one such discovery recently (最近).
They found treasure that they think is about 1,000 years old!
The treasure was hidden in a pot.
There are rings, pearls, and coins made of silver.
The archaeologists were very excited because they said the jewelry looked
almost completely new.
Some of the coins did not come from the area.
Instead, they came from France, England, Bohemia and Bavaria.
The French coin is important, because the archaeologists say it is very rare
They think the coin was made during the 10th century, A.D.
The artifacts were buried under the floor of a building.
The building is in an area where Vikings (維京人) lived for several hundred
years.
Scientists still don't know why such valuable things were buried like that.
But they want to find out.

A Searchable Map for New Year's Sunrise
A lot of people love to watch the sunrise on New Year's Day, as it represents
a fresh start.
It has become a tradition for many Taiwanese.
From Alishan to the mountains and coastlines (海岸線) of eastern Taiwan...
These are all popular spots for watching the first ray of sunlight.
For these "sun catchers" (追日族), things might just have been made easier.
The Taipei Astronomical Museum has a new interactive (互動式) online map.
This map allows users to find the sunrise and sunset times in places around
the world.
Users choose a spot on the map to find out the exact time the sun will rise
and set.
The museum explained that the time for sunrise and sunset are different in
each place, based on latitude (緯度), longitude (經度), and altitude (高度).
According to the museum, the best sunrise location in Taiwan for January 1st,
2023 will be Po Nan Shan (柏南山) in Hualien County.
So, if you want to catch the first sunrise of 2023, find a location on the
map and get your camera ready.

Park Rangers are Using E-bikes to Catch Poachers
Have you ever been surprised by an electric bike?
They are so quiet and sometimes you don't know they are right beside you.
The quietness is sometimes dangerous in the city.
But it can be a good thing!
This advantage (優勢) is being used to catch poachers (盜獵者) in African
wildlife parks.
A Swedish electric bike company is working with Southern African Wildlife
College (SAWC).
SAWC trains park rangers (護林員) for 127 parks across Africa.
In the past, poachers can escape easily because of the loud noises the petrol
(汽油) motorbikes make.
They can even hear the rangers coming from over a kilometer away.
But now, the silent motor of the e-bike has become the surprise secret weapon
for saving the world's most endangered species
Several poaching attempts have been stopped this year by rangers on e-bikes,
saving a variety of animals.

Lab-made Milk to Fight Climate Pollution
For thousands of years, humans have been drinking milk.
We grow grass, raise cattle, milk the cows, and so on.
People drink a lot of milk and use it to make many other foods.
Milk is used in cheese, yogurt, chocolate, and cookies.
But keeping animals for milk this way is hurting the environment.
Studies have shown that cows belch methane (甲烷) that contribute to global
warming.
In recent years, food scientists, dairy experts and biologists
have been trying to solve the problem.
Now, they've come up with a few different ways to make milk, without making
methane.
The most common method is using micro-organisms (微生物).
The secret lies in cow DNA.
DNA stores instructions of how living creatures function.
Cow DNA knows how to produce milk, but is only activated during pregnancy
Scientists inserted the gene sequence (基因順序) that produces dairy protein
into the microbes.
The microbes then make lots of milk.
The scientists are very optimistic (樂觀) about this technology.
Animals are not needed for this process.
It doesn't produce waste that pollutes the land and water.
The most important thing is that it doesn't produce methane.
Lab-made milk is currently used in ice cream, milk and cheese.
The scientists say it tastes just like milk from a cow.
