The New Taipei government says it plans to have 300 YouBike stations and 8,000 public bikes available around the city by 2016.

According to New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu, 60 YouBike rental stations with 1,600 bikes will be in operation by the end of this year.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Chu said by introducing a system that has already proven a hit in neighboring Taipei, his government has formally introduced a new era of public transportation that he touted as “Green Sharing.”

As of the end of June, Taipei City had 160 YouBike stations with 5,265 bikes.

New Taipei previously introduced a system called NewBike, which was not compatible with Taipei’s YouBike network, but the new system will be fully compatible with Taipei’s YouBike within two years.
