Hey everybody, it's time for a new episode of News Bites...
I'm Nancy Sun.
And I'm Jacob Ingram.
In today's stories...
Motorcycle drivers want to use Taiwan's highways, and breakdancers help kids
in Gaza.
And in today's Tasty Tidbit…do you know about collective nouns?
Keep on listening to learn more about all of these!

Motorcyclists Want to Use National Highways
What's that sound?
Woah, check out those heavy motorcycles (重機)!
Motorcycles, eh? You mean like scooters (機車)?
Kind of. Motorcycles and scooters both have two wheels.
But a heavy motorcycle is much bigger.
And its engine is more powerful.
So they're not scooters.
Does that mean you can drive them on the highway, like a car?
Not exactly.
And many motorcyclists think that's a problem.
Recently they had a protest (抗議示威) in Taipei.
It was on the street outside of the Ministry of Transportation and
Communications, or MOTC (交通部).
Hundreds of motorcycles showed up.
All down the road, you could hear these big bikes revving their engines.
Thousands of other people came to support them, too.
What did they want?
They want to be able to use national highways.
It all has to do with Taiwan's road laws
The MOTC says anyone can use smaller roads.
But scooters and motorcycles can't use the big national freeways (國道).
They can't really use provincial highways (省道), either.
In the past, people thought it was too dangerous to let motorcycles on these
high-speed roads (高速公路).
But motorcyclists say it is actually safer.
If they can't use the highways, they often have to take small, dark mountain
roads, which may be unsafe.
They also want the government to change some other laws for heavy motorcycles.
They want to be able to turn like cars, and to park in more places.
So how did the government (政府) respond to these protests?
The MOTC says it is not ready to talk about changing the law.
They say most people still don't want motorcycles on national highways.
The protesters were not happy (不滿) with this answer.
They say they will keep spreading their message, until they get a chance to
change the law.

Breakdancers Help Kids of Gaza
Have you ever seen breakdancing (地板舞)?
It's a really cool activity.
Imagine someone dancing with a lot of energy, jumping, flipping, and spinning
on the floor.
That's breakdancing.
It's popular all over the world, even in Gaza (加沙).
That's part of Palestine, in the Middle East.
Maybe you heard about Gaza in the news.
There's a war going on there, and many people are trapped.
That includes two breakdancers, Ahmed and Karim.
When the war started, they could not leave Gaza.
At first, they spent five days hiding in their houses.
When Ahmed and Karim came out, they saw many homes were destroyed.
They also saw the kids from those homes were now living in camps.
They noticed how hard it was for the kids, and decided to do something about
it.
Ahmed and Karim got together with their friends and started a group called
the Camp Breakerz Crew.
They go to the camps, and teach breakdancing.
The families and kids gather in a big circle to watch.
The Camp Breakerz Crew teaches the kids how to do jumps and flips.
The kids can learn how to spin on the floor
Everyone is excited, and many kids want to try the dance moves.
Ahmed says it makes him feel good.
He says "When I see this number of children and families around me, I feel a
sense of responsibility (責任感)."
He also says "To see the children respond is a pleasure. It makes me feel
proud (自豪感)."
He knows his group is really helping the kids of Gaza.
It's not just for fun, either.
Ahmad says breakdancing gives them the energy to stay strong and focused.
Karim adds that the dancing helps the kids relieve stress.
The war is still going on today, and many kids are still stuck in Gaza.
But Ahmed and Karim are there helping.
The Camp Breakerz Crew will keep on dancing, no matter what.

Did you know that groups of animals have some really funny names?
The names of groups are called "collective nouns."
There are many animals that have really interesting collective nouns!
Here are some of my favorites:
A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance."
Imagine them showing off their bright pink feathers!
And what about a group of crows?
They're called a "murder" of crows, but don't worry, they're not as scary as
it sounds.
Have you ever heard of a "parliament" of owls?
It's like they're having a wise old meeting in the trees.
And let's not forget a "crash" of rhinos - sounds like a noisy bunch!
Do you know about other funny collective nouns?
If you have a fun fact, a joke, or interesting news you'd like to share with

Airport customs reveal a major drug bust
Most countries have a customs service (海關).
It is run by customs officers
They are responsible for checking goods to make sure nothing or illegal
dangerous enters or leaves the country.
They work mostly at ports, airports and border checkpoints between countries.
They are most commonly seen at airports, inspecting passengers' luggage.
Have you ever been stopped by a customs officer before?
No, I haven't.
Well, I have. It was because I forgot to put my toothpaste into a plastic bag.
Luckily, I was not arrested.
Thanks for that, Jake.
Anyway … some customs officers use sniffer dogs (嗅探犬).
Sniffer dogs are very clever.
They are able to sniff luggage and containers to detect if there are any bad
stuff, like drugs and weapons, hidden inside.
I wonder if they used sniffer dogs to bust Bald Head's drug operation.
Excuse me?
Did you not hear about 'Bald Head' and his two accomplices (幫兇)?
Uhh…
Well, let me tell you more.
Sometimes, criminals give themselves nicknames to keep their real names
secret.
The big boss, or 老大, of a drug cartel (販毒集團), gave himself the nickname
'Bald Head' (光頭).
Okay…
Customs officers recently found two people trying to bring drugs into Taiwan.
They hid drugs inside containers labeled as protein powder.
After the police questioned them, the two individuals said they were working
for someone called 'Bald Head.'
So where is 'Bald Head' now?
At the moment, I'm afraid 'Bald Head' is still at large.
He is wanted by five different police stations.

Japan Postpones Launch of Mars Moon Probe to 2026
You've heard of Mars, right, Nancy?
Yes, I have.
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in our solar system.
That's correct.
Now, our planet Earth has just one moon. But did you know that Mars has two
moons?
Two moons?
Yup. Pretty cool, huh?
Their names are Phobos and Deimos.
Now, you may be wondering why I'm bringing up the subject of Mars and its two
moons.
It seems a bit random, doesn't it?
Especially after hearing about the Bald Head story.
Randomness is aplenty in my scripts.
Anyway, you might have heard in the news recently …
Japan plans to launch a probe to both of Mars' moons to collect soil samples
Most space missions focus on studying Mars itself, not its moons.
However, Japan delayed the launch of its Mars moon probe by two years.
The reason is that their H3 rocket (火箭) failed in March.
Before space probes go to their destination, they have to be lifted off the
Earth quickly.
We use carrier rockets (運載火箭) to accomplish this.
Carrier rockets can travel very fast.
They typically reach speeds between 25-thousand and 40-thousand kilometers
per hour.
That's 83 to 133 times faster than the top speed of Taiwan High Speed Rail!
When a carrier rocket is flying, equipment detaches and continues into space,
while the rocket falls back to Earth.
If a carrier rocket isn't foolproof, there's no way to leave Earth.

And in today's tasty tidbit: Electricity in the human brain.
Let's check it out.

Kaohsiung Neighborhood Prepares to Move
Have you ever been to Kaohsiung?
Maybe you've been to Siaogang District (小港區).
It's one of Taiwan's biggest industrial areas (工業區).
It's really heavy industry down there!
There are big factories, making steel (鋼鐵), oil (石油), and every kind of
There's a company building huge ships, and a power plant burning coal.
And right in the middle of it, there's a little village where people live.
It's called Dalinpu Village
For many years, the people of Dalinpu have had to live next to all of these
factories and power plants.
Every day, they eat and sleep surrounded by the pollution (污染) from the
industrial areas.
Now, the government (政府) says it will help the people move away from there.
They have agreed to spend 80 billion NT on the move.
The money will provide (提供) new homes to almost 6000 people from Dalinpu.
They will be able to escape the pollution, and live in a cleaner area.
Not everybody wants to leave Dalinpu.
Even though the air is dirty, some residents (居民) still regard it as home.
Some people have even lived there since before the area became an industrial
zone.
But most people want to go.
In 2017, they had a vote, and 90% of people agreed to relocate.
Now they need to decide where to go.
Many of the details (細節) still need to be worked out.
But people agree that they can't stay there much longer.
Each year, the pollution gets worse.
So, the residents of Dalinpu are getting ready to say goodbye to their old
neighborhood (舊社區) and say hello to a cleaner, safer living environment

Another Planet Inside Earth
What is inside our planet (行星)?
Yes, our planet Earth (地球)!
We live on the surface (地表).
But if you dig down, deep into the ground, what is at the center of the
planet?
In the past, people thought there might be a secret world down there.
Later, scientists found out that the core of the earth is made of hot rock
and oceans of magma.
But recently, scientists have made a startling discovery
They think there might be another planet inside Earth.
How can that be?
It started when scientists tried to test a theory
They wanted to know how the moon (月亮) was made.
According to the theory, another planet called Theia crashed into Earth
billions of years ago.
The crash melted both planets, and blew lots of dirt and rocks into space.
Then, this rock came together to form the moon.
Scientists thought it was an interesting idea, but they weren't sure it was
correct.
After all, nobody was around billions of years ago, so how could they know?
A couple scientists thought if planet Theia had crashed into Earth, maybe
some pieces of Theia would still be inside our planet.
Dr Qian Yuan from California and Professor Hongping Deng from China used a
computer to test the idea.
The test showed that part of the planet Theia would remain as blobs of rock
(岩石團) inside Earth.
The amazing thing is, there really are two huge blobs of strange rock in the
earth.
The blobs are deep underground, 3,000 kilometers below Africa and the Pacific
Ocean.
Scientists know these blobs are different from the rest of Earth, but for a
long time they have not known where these blobs come from.
Now, Dr Yuan and Professor Deng say these blobs might come from the planet
Theia.
If that's true, it means there are parts of a completely different planet
buried (埋著) under our feet.
Now, the scientists want to test rocks from the moon.
If the moon rocks are similar to the underground blobs in Earth, then maybe
both of them came from the planet Theia.

So, in today's newsbites...
All the people from a Kaohsiung neighborhood are preparing to move away.
Dalinpu Village is polluted, because it is near an industrial area.
Now, the government has set aside some money to help nearly 6000 residents
find new homes.
And...
Scientists think there might be another planet inside Earth.
They think the planet Theia crashed into Earth billions of years ago.
That crash might have left parts of Theia inside Earth, and also created the
moon.

Did you know that the human brain generates about 20 Watts of electrical
power?
While the brain represents only about 2% of a person's total body weight, it
consumes about 20% of the body's energy.
The electrical activity generated by the brain, often measured in watts, is
roughly equivalent to the power consumption of a dim light bulb.

Apple Sidra's Comeback
Apple Sidra is a popular soda (汽水) in Taiwan.
It has a history of almost 60 years.
It was first made in 1965.
And it can be found in the refrigerator of many local restaurants, especially
"rechao (熱炒)" and seafood restaurants.
The company that makes Apple Sidra is Oceanic Beverages.
They say that Apple Sidra is made without any preservatives (防腐劑) or
artificial flavor.
But the makers of the gold-colored soda ran into some trouble earlier this
year.
Someone saw some white sediment (沉澱物) in bottles of the soda.
Health officials tested the soda.
And they checked the factory in Taoyuan that made the soda.
They found some problems.
They found mold (霉) and yeast (酵母菌) in the sediment.
And there were some problems at the factory too.
Health officials ordered the factory to shut down for some time.
It couldn't make any Apple Sidra during this time.
Many customers were surprised when the soda was not on store shelves anymore.
Some complained that they could not find an apple soda that tasted the same.
Oceanic Beverages worked on making improvements for six months.
Officials let the factory restart.
And health officials checked the sodas that it made.
They said all the sodas met safety standards (標準).
Many people have made videos introducing Taiwanese drinks to people in other
countries.
Some of them really enjoyed Apple Sidra.

Tiny Robots Made from Human Cells
The advancement of technology in medicine is incredible
Scientists have made tiny groups of human cells that can move on their own.
They call them "anthrobots" (人類機器人).
And these anthrobots could help us fight disease!
The idea actually came from "xenobots."
Xenobots are tiny robots made by stitching frog embryo (胚胎) cells together.
They can group themselves together.
And they can even move over surfaces and through liquid.
But xenobots are not made from human cells.
This means they cannot be used to fix problems in the human body.
But anthrobots can!
Scientist did an experiment.
They wanted to see if anthrobots could help heal wounds
They put a layer of neurons (神經細胞) in a dish.
Then they scratched (刮傷) the neurons.
And they put the anthrobots near the scratch.
Within days, the neurons regrew, and the wound closed.
Scientists are still trying to find out how the anthrobots helped heal the
wound.
They also tried the experiment with other substances (物質).
But they did not get the same result.
This healing was quite surprising to scientists.
Because the cells were not genetically modified
They were just grown from a single adult human lung cell.
This means that they can use anyone's cells, even cells from elderly patients.
The genes don't have to go through editing and that saves a lot of time and
work.
The anthrobots ability to heal could lead to many uses in regenerative
Regenerative medicine is about fixing or even replacing (撤換) parts of the
human body that have been damaged.
Now, scientists are trying to grow human organs (器官) in the lab.
They want to find out what triggers (引發) the anthrobot's healing mechanism.
And they hope to use it to repair damaged organs in the human body.
It sounds like something straight out of a science fiction movie!

Taipei Police Capture Fugitive Teacher
In December 1999, something really bad happened in a karaoke bar in Taipei.
A person was shot and killed.
One of the suspects (嫌犯) was a guy.
His nickname … Teacher Chen (陳老師).
The police tried to catch Chen, but he managed to stay hidden for a very, very long time.
Chen avoided being caught by not having any ID, not staying in one place and moving mostly at night.
He walked or biked not to attract attention, like a shadow moving in the dark.
For many years, "Teacher Chen" was like a tricky puzzle for the police.
Chen knew how the police worked.
So he cleverly moved around different places without them finding him.
In the last two years, he returned to a neighborhood in Taipei.
Maybe he thought the police wouldn't be looking for him anymore?
But guess what?
The police got a secret tip about where he was.
They then formed a special team to catch him.
Even though Police didn't have a photo of him, they identified him using his fingerprints.
Police took him to the Shilin Prosecutor's Office
They suspect he was involved in the murder.

Lord of the Rings Fanfiction Writer Files a Lawsuit
Have you heard of Demetrious Polychron?
I'm sorry, who?
Didn't think so.
But maybe you've heard of Lord of the Rings?
Yes, I have.
Lord of the Rings one of the most famous and best-selling fantasy books of all time.
It's a story about a hobbit called Frodo Baggins, who goes on a journey to destroy a powerful ring.
Along the way, he is joined by humans, elves, dwarves, and wizards.
Together, they face various challenges and battles against the dark forces led by the evil Sauron.
The story explores themes of friendship, courage, and the struggle between good and evil in the fantasy world of Middle-earth.
That's right!
It has sold over 150 million copies.
Now, imagine writing your very own sequel (續集) to this story.
Meet Demetrious Polychron...
He wrote a book called "The Fellowship of the King".
Oh, come on!
He just took the title from the first volume of Lord of the Rings.
That might be the case.
The first volume of Lord of the Rings is called "The Fellowship of the Ring".
In any case, he thought it was the perfect sequel.
But guess what?
He got into some serious trouble.
Oh, did he now?
Yes!
Back in 2017, Polychron tried to team up with the Tolkien Estate to publish his book.
They said, "No."
But he went ahead and published it on his own anyway in 2022.
Fast forward to 2023, he actually sued (提出訴訟) the Tolkien Estate and Amazon.
What? How come?
Polychron claimed they stole ideas from his book for their TV series, "The Rings of Power".
And get this, he wanted a whopping 250 million US dollars!
That. Is. Insane.
As you can expect, things didn't quite go his way.
The judge ruled that Polychron's book was actually copying stuff from Amazon's show, not the other way around.
The court ordered Polychron to destroy all physical and digital copies of his book.
They also ordered him to pay $134-thousand US dollars in legal fees to the Tolkien Estate and Amazon.
Ouch!
Talk about a tough day for poor old Polychron!
Lesson learned, folks: Don't mess with the magic of Middle-earth!
