Hey there, this is... News Bites! And welcome to it!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...

In today's news:
A big duck returns to Taiwan, a man puts on a disguise, and a woman comes out
of a cave.
Stay tuned for more on these stories, coming up next.

Giant Rubber Duck Appears in Kaohsiung
Okay, I have a joke for you.
What sound does the little bird make?
"Cheep cheep!"
Okay then, what sound does the BIG bird make?
"CHEEEEEP!"
Now, what sound does a 15-meter-tall inflatable duck in Kaohsiung Harbor make?
*HOOOOOOOOOOONK*
That's right, the big yellow duck came back to visit Taiwan!
This giant duck-shaped balloon is actually a piece of art that floats on the
water, and lots of people come to take pictures of it.
It was made by a Dutch artist (荷蘭的藝術家) named Florentijn Hofman.
He has made a lot of these giant ducks, to show in countries all around the
world.
The giant duck's first time in Taiwan was in the year 2013, when it floated
(漂浮) around Kaohsiung, Taoyuan, and Keelung.
And that time, around 4 million people (四百萬人) went to go see it, in just
one month!
So people were very surprised to see it appear (出現) in Kaohsiung again.
However, some people were worried the giant duck would affect boats in the
harbor (有的人擔心黃色小鴨會影響到港口的船), so it was only inflated as a
test.
Maybe someday we'll see it again!

Man Wears Disguise to Join Chess Tournament
Do you like to play chess (西洋棋)?
Well, you probably don't like chess as much as one man does...
This guy REALLY wanted to play chess.
So he joined a chess tournament
But there was one big problem...
This chess tournament was only for women!
So, this man wore a hijab (頭巾) to cover his face and body.
Then, he pretended (假裝) to be a woman!
At first, people at the tournament were a little suspicious (懷疑).
They said it was really weird that this... "woman" didn't talk, and wore
really big shoes (穿很大的鞋子.)
But they couldn't see her... or his... face, so they still weren't sure
(還不確定) if it might be a man.
Finally, after the tournament's fourth round (過了比賽的第四關), they asked
him to show his face.
And, of course... he was a man!
They removed him (踢出比賽) from the women's chess tournament.
And they say he won't be allowed (不允許) to play in any tournaments for a
few years.
Of course, he did a very weird thing...
But man, he must REALLY love chess!

Woman Lives in a Cave for 500 Days
For our final story, we're looking at an amazing athlete
But this woman doesn't play basketball, or football, or chess...
She does things like... living in a cave (洞穴)!
This woman went into a cave in Russia, on November 21st, 2021...
And she didn't come out until this month!
While she was in the cave (當她在洞穴裡面), she says she spent lots of time
exercising, drawing, and knitting hats (織帽子).
She also read 60 books, and drank 1,000 liters of water
And she didn't talk to anyone!
Luckily, there was a group of scientists nearby.
They monitored her (監看她的狀況), to make sure she was safe.
Scientists say her 500 days in a cave can teach us a lot about the human
Now, she holds the world record (世界紀錄) for longest time spent in a cave.
Whoof... doing anything for 500 days is pretty tough!

Same-Sex Couples Can Jointly Adopt
Taiwan is Asia's leading country for LGBT rights (權益).
LGBT stands for people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.
These are people who may love someone of the same gender (性別) or feel they
are a different gender from the one they were born as.
In 2019, Taiwan became the first place in Asia to allow same-sex (同性)
couples to get married.
There are laws to protect people from being treated badly because of who they
love or how they feel about their gender.
There's even a special day when people march in the streets to celebrate love
and diversity (多元文化), called the Pride Parade (同志遊行).
On May 16th, the Legislative Yuan (立法院) changed a rule to help same-sex
couples.
Before, these couples could only adopt their spouse's child if it was their
biological child.
But now, these couples can also adopt a child together.
Everyone is saying it's a fair thing to do because it's important that all
kinds of families can take care of children.
People who care about the rights of children and LGBT people are really happy
about this change.
Love is love, no matter who you are.

Mysterious Pasta in the Woods
Picture this (想像一下): You're walking in the woods, and guess what you
find?
Piles and piles of pasta!
This happened near a river in the US city of Old Bridge last month.
No one knew how the pasta got there.
And when the city cleaned it up, they found there were 500 pounds of noodles
Pictures of the pasta were posted on Facebook, and many people found it
funny.
A netizen (網友) joked that cleaning it up was "Mission Im-pasta-ble"
And another joked, "Lead suspect (主要嫌疑人) is a guy named Al Dente."
"Al Dente"是一個義大利詞語,用來形容煮得恰到好處、口感稍硬的義大利麵。
It turns out the suspect was not a guy named Al Dente, but a man who wanted
to clean out his pantry
Neighbors say the city doesn't have bulk garbage pickup
which is a big problem.
The man didn't know how else to throw away all the pasta he had.
The incident brought a lot of attention (吸引很多注意) to the town's garbage
problem.
The residents hope city authorities can provide better trash pickup services
after this.

How Goats are Saving Forests in Chile
Forest fires are becoming more and more common as we deal with the climate
crisis.
They hurt the trees and plants, animals that live in the woods lose their
homes, and the smoke harms our earth.
It's important to know how we can prevent (防止) forest fires.
In a city in Chile named Santa Juana, there's a team of helpers that help
protect the forest from dangerous fires.
And they're goats (山羊)!
These goats have already helped to save a forest park called Bosques de
Chacay from a big fire that happened in February.
But thanks to the goats, the park was safe!
The goats eat the dry plants that can catch fire easily during the hot
summer.
They also help the soil stay healthy with their poop.
A forestry engineer (林業工程師) says, "These animals can help us a lot."
He thinks more people should use goats to eat the dry plants that can catch
fire.

Taiwan Prehistory Museum Reopens
You can learn a lot about history in a museum.
But what's in a museum about "prehistory"?
Prehistory is the time before humans started to write things down.
Humans used simple tools (工具).
But they did not have the complex (複雜的) writing systems that we have now.
So how do we know what was Taiwan like during that time?
The National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung has reopened.
It shows visitors Taiwan's prehistory, natural history, and the culture of
Taiwan's indigenous peoples.
The museum was closed for almost three years for renovation (整修).
And it reopened just in time for International Museum Day.
The museum's director says the museum shows Taiwan's history from the
Paleolithic Period (舊石器時代) to the 21st century.
The director says there are stone tools that are around 30,000 years old.
And there are new things, like a Golden Melody Award trophy lent (借) by Amis
singer Suming Lupi.
The director says she hopes visitors can see the amazing contributions of
Taiwan's Indigenous peoples.
And the museum also shows Taiwan's links to the world.
The director says archeologists have found things that show Austronesian
settlers coming to Taiwan as early as 30,000 years ago.

Nigerian Chef Breaks World Record for Nonstop Cooking
How would you show the world you are strong and hardworking?
How about by breaking a world record?
A Nigerian chef has set a new global record for nonstop cooking.
She has cooked for more than 100 hours!
The last record for nonstop cooking was 87 hours and 45 minutes.
That record was set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
Hilda Baci started cooking on Thursday, May 11th in Lagos, Nigeria.
And she passed 100 hours on May 15th.
She took a five-minute break every hour.
Or she took a one-hour break every 12 hours.
During that one hour of rest, she would take a shower, get checked by a
doctor, and rest.
Thousands of people have gathered to watch Hilda cook.
She has made dozens of Nigerian dishes, including rice and stew.
Many people are also watching online.
Why is she doing this?
Hilda says she wants to show how hardworking and determined (有決心) young
Nigerians are.
She also wants to help show how strong young African women are.
Hilda says they often have to go "an extra mile to be taken seriously".
And she is helping the world learn more about Nigerian cuisine.

And in today's Tasty Tidbit…Words... Words... Words... Words... Words...

Taiwan's First Co-Ed Dorm
A dormitory (宿舍), or 'dorm' for short, is a type of housing where students
live when they go to university.
Students get their own beds, and share common areas (公共區域) like kitchens,
bathrooms, and living rooms.
It's a fun way to make friends and live close to where you study.
In Taiwan, dorms are separated by gender.
All male students would live in one building...
…and all female students would live in another building.
But there is one university that wants to try something different!
National Cheng-chi University (政治大學), or NCCU for short, has done
something super cool.
They've opened a co-ed dorm (男女混合宿舍) where boys and girls can live
together!
That's a first in Taiwan.
This new student dorm is in Taipei City's Muzha District, close to the NCCU
campus (校園).
It used to be staff housing a long time ago, but it has been given a major
makeover.
Now, it has everything students need: beds, desks, fridges, and even washing
machines.
Groups of students had to apply and then a lucky draw decided who got in
Each unit, or house, can fit up to 8 or 10 students, depending on the number
of bedrooms.
And it's super affordable!
Meanwhile, people in Taiwan seem to like this idea of boys and girls being
together.
Not just in dorms, but also in schools.
Many top high schools in Taiwan are boys' schools or girls' schools.
A big survey says that most Taiwanese people want to end separating boys and
girls in high schools.
People say high school is a crucial time (關鍵時期) for boys and girls to get
to know each other.
And they should be able to learn together.
The survey found that 80-percent of people encourage kids to not just stick
to old-fashioned ideas about what boys and girls should do.
In fact, nearly 70-percent agreed that times have changed.
The old way of putting boys first is fading away.

First Bob Ross Painting on Sale for Nearly 10 Million US Dollars
Have you heard of Bob Ross?
He was a super famous painter (畫家) with a TV show called "The Joy of
Painting."
He made painting fun and easy for everyone!
But guess what?
The very first painting he did on his show is now up for sale for $9.85
million US dollars.
That's almost $10 million dollars!
So, who's selling this painting?
A guy named Ryan Nelson owns an art gallery (藝術畫廊) in Minneapolis, a city
in the United States
He calls this painting, "A Walk in the Woods."
It's the first painting Bob Ross ever did for TV.
Nelson isn't in a hurry to sell it.
Nelson
He wants people to see it and get inspired to paint!
Bob Ross started his show in 1983, and he made it super chill and easy
He wore a cool beard and a perm.
And he showed people that anyone could paint, even without going to fancy art
schools.
His show was a big hit until he passed away in 1995.
Now, you might think $10 million US dollars is a lot for a painting.
And you'd be right!
No Bob Ross painting has ever been sold for that much money.
But Nelson believes this painting is extra special (非常特別) because it's
Bob Ross's first.
And it shows what he was all about-making art for regular people (普通人)
like you and me.
Would you like to see this expensive painting
Ryan Nelson hopes to show it in different museums so people can enjoy it.
Even if it's super costly (昂貴), the idea is to make art fun for everyone.

Words... Words... Words... Words... Words...
When you say one word over, and over, and over again, you might feel like the
word starts to sound pretty weird.
Even if you know what the word means... if you say it a hundred times, you
might feel like it loses meaning, and just becomes a sound.
In fact, researchers have found that after a person says a word just 30

Why does this happen...? Honestly... we still don't really know.
But try saying a word 100 times, and see how it feels!

Woman Challenges Government over Firefighter Rules
Firefighters (消防員) have a hard job.
They face danger all the time.
But people respect them, because of the work they do.
For some young people, it is a dream to become a firefighter.
They want to help others and serve their community.
For example, there is a woman named Chen (陳).
She wants to become a firefighter.
Chen took the certification test (消防人員考試), and she passed it.
There's only one problem...
The government says she is too short for the job.
They say a women needs to be at least 160 centimeters tall to become a
firefighter.
But Chen is only 158.9 centimeters tall.
That means she is 1.1 centimeter too short.
So the government did not accept her for the job.
Now, Chen is suing the government
She has brought her case to the Constitutional Court
This special court decides if the country's laws follow the constitution.
The constitution protects people's rights
It gives everyone the right to work in government.
That's why Chen says the height requirement is a form of discrimination.
However, the government does not agree.
They say the height requirement is important.
The rules make sure firefighters are strong enough to do their job.
What's more, they say if the firefighters are too short, it may be dangerous
for public safety or for other firefighters.
Still, Chen insists (堅持) that the rule is not fair between men and women.
Men must be 165 centimeters tall to join, and 90% of men meet this
requirement.
But women must be 160 centimeters tall to join, and only 45% of women are.
That's why Chen thinks the law is not balanced (不平衡).
The Constitutional Court will listen to both sides carefully.
They will make a decision by this summer.
Then Chen will know if she can become a firefighter, or if she really is too
short for the job.

Scientists Study Chewing Gum from 10,000 Years Ago
Have you ever found some old chewing gum (口香糖)?
I found this gum under my chair.
Gross (噁心)! It looks like someone was chewing on it, and then just left it
there.
I wonder who it was...
Scientists in Sweden (瑞典) recently found something like that.
It was gum someone had been chewing on.
But that gum was ten thousand years old.
Now, scientists are studying it to learn more about how people lived long ago.
The gum is black and covered in teeth marks
Scientists say it's made of tree resin (樹脂).
They think people chewed the gum to use as a kind of glue (黏合劑).
After they chewed it, they could use it to make tools.
Other scientists think they used the gum as a medicine.
They found it buried next to some bones in the ground.
But the interesting part is, the scientists found DNA on the ten-thousand
year old gum.
That told them the gum was chewed by teenagers (青少年).
Scientists could also learn about the teenager's diet
The DNA showed that the teenagers ate trout meat and deer meat.
They also ate apples and hazelnuts.
Scientists think this discovery is amazing.
This DNA from the gum is the only way scientists can know for sure what
people used to eat.
They were surprised by how many different things people used to eat.
It seems like ancient people had a rich diet.
But there was some bad news, too...
The DNA on the gum showed that one of the teenagers had a bad tooth infection
The scientists guess her teeth fell out soon after she chewed the gum.
Maybe, in the past, people didn't know how to brush their teeth.
Whatever the case, it's so cool to think your gum could tell future people
all about your life.
Maybe, in 10,000 years, people will find your gum.
What will it say about you?

When you eat something that's been sitting out for too long, you might feel a
bit nauseous.
Sometimes, you might even get rid of the bad microbes you ate by throwing up,

But did you know…frogs CAN'T vomit?
When a frog eats something toxic, it throws up its entire stomach!
Like turning a pocket inside out, the frog will dump out its stomach…
…wipe it clean to remove toxic food…
…and then put it back inside its body.
Wild!
