Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Paz Bueno…
And I'm Trevor Tortomasi.
In today's news:
Taipei's first digital high school, a superhero dog cleaning parks in Chile,
and Hyundai's walking cars!
All that and more, coming up next.

Taipei City's first digital high school
How do you feel about having online classes?
Students around Taiwan have a lot of experience with distance learning
(遠距教學) because of COVID-19.
And now, Taipei is opening its first digital (數位) senior high school for
the next school year.
It's called the Taipei Digital Experimental High School, or 'T-school'.
The T stands for Taipei, technology (科技), and talent (才能).
It also stands for 'T-shaped skills', which means knowing about one subject
and having the ability to cooperate with people who know about different
subjects.
It is run by the city government, and students can have the opportunity
(機會) to learn any time, anywhere.
The school believes that education is not limited by (受限於) time and space.
Students can study and earn credits (賺取學分) through online courses,
in-person courses or mixed learning modes.
They would take online courses at home during school study hours or use
classrooms in the school's learning center.
They can also go to other places, such as libraries, and science and
education centers with the school's approval.
The Department of Education says applications (申請) are open to students at
the junior high school level.
The new academic year (學年) starts in August and only 48 students will be
admitted.
The curriculum (課程) uses physical and digital resources to create a new
learning experience.

The clean, green, superhero dog in Chile
Sam might not look like a superhero (超級英雄), but his work has inspired
many people in Santiago, the capital of Chile
He is a border collie (邊境牧羊犬) and he has become famous for being "Sam:
the Parquemet Superhero" because of his work cleaning a park.
It all started when Sam and his owner (主人) walked in Santiago's
Metropolitan Park (聖地牙哥大都會公園).
They found a lot of garbage, from plastic bottles to face masks.
In just one month, Sam and his owner collected 602 face masks, 585 bottles
and 304 cans.
Park officials were so amazed they decided to use Sam's image to teach people
about maintaining a clean environment.
An artist named Catalina Aravena turned Sam into a comic character
In the comic, he wears a green cape (披風) and tells people to take their
waste with them, or use the recycling points in the park.
His story has reached schools and spread (傳播) online on social media.
Park officials launched an anti-littering campaign last year.
They were inspired by Sam to strengthen their efforts related to educating
the public and collecting waste.

Hyundai's "Walking" Cars May Soon Be A Reality!
Car makers often make concept cars (概念車) to show off their technology.
But most never make it past the prototype stage because they're too
far-fetched or too expensive to make on a big scale.
South Korean car manufacturer (製造商) Hyundai plans to make two futuristic
cars.
They are called the Elevate and Tiger X-1.
The Elevate looks like the four-legged All Terrain Armored Transport AT-AT
walkers in the Star Wars movies.
Elevate
It's battery-powered (電池供電) and can fit up to four people.
It has robotic legs, so the vehicle can step over obstacles and climb over
five-foot-tall walls, while keeping its passengers completely level.
The legs fold (折疊), so the car can travel on normal roads, too.
Hyundai thinks Elevate could be useful for exploring rural areas or for
helping first responders (第一批救難人員) deal with difficult terrain after
natural disasters.
The car can also help people in wheelchairs (輪椅).
The company believes the Hyundai Elevate can walk up to their front doors and
allow the wheelchair to roll right inside.
The Tiger X-1 is smaller, but it has similar features (功能) to the Elevate.
It is unmanned, autonomous, and small enough to be carried by a drone.
It doesn't carry people.
Hyundai says the Tiger X-1 could be used for scientific explorations of
extreme environments or for emergency services, like sending medicine or
equipment to the site of a natural disaster.
Tiger X-1
The vehicle could someday even be used to travel on the surface of the Moon
or Mars (月球或火星表面).
The Korean car manufacturer is also working on making flying taxis, too.
They will make it easier to transport people in busy cities.

Taiwan Gets Ready to Celebrate Canada's 155th Birthday
How do you celebrate your birthday?
Of course, each person has their own birthday.
But many countries (國家) have birthdays, too!
And people in Taiwan are getting ready to throw a big birthday party
(舉辦一個大生日派對), for one country...
But it's not for Taiwan... it's for Canada (加拿大)!
The event (活動) will be called "Celebration Canada".
It's a party to celebrate Canada's 155th national day
It'll have music, art, games, food, and even a special area for kids, to
celebrate the many connections between Taiwan and Canada.
Because of COVID-19, the last time Taiwan celebrated Canada Day was in the
year 2019, three years ago.
And every year, it was the largest foreign national day event celebrated in
Taiwan!
This year's Celebration Canada event is on Saturday, June 25th, from 1:00 PM
to 9:00 PM, at Taipei Expo Park, in Yuanshan.
Taiwan's government is reminding people to wear masks at the event
So remember to stay safe, but feel free to join the party!

James Webb Space Telescope to Share First Pictures
Last year, on December 25th, scientists put something very important into
space.
It's called the James Webb Space Telescope (韋伯天文望遠鏡), or the JWST, and
it's the most powerful telescope ever made
Scientists started to build it in the year 1996, and it encountered (遇到了)
many problems in its development (發展).
But almost 30 years later, after spending 10 billion U.S. dollars
(一百億美元) to get it into space, it's finally ready to show us what it can
see!
This summer, on July 12th, NASA will share the JWST's first real space
pictures with the world.
Scientists say the first pictures will show how powerful the telescope is,
and preview its next mission.
They say it took five years of work from many people, just to decide (決定)
which pictures to show first.
That's because many people have been waiting a long time for this moment
And for the last six months, the telescope has been especially busy (特別忙).
It has unfolded 18 golden mirrors (鏡子), to focus on stars that are billions
of lightyears away (那些鏡子聚焦在離地球數百億光年的星球上).
And because it needs to be very cold to take in this light, it has unfolded a
giant shield (盾) to protect itself from the sun.
When many scientists finally get these pictures on July 12th, they will be
very busy, too!
This telescope is now one of NASA's most important missions
and it will be sending us pictures of deep space (太空深處) for many years to
come.
So, what do you think we'll see next?

Did China's Radio Telescope Just Discover Aliens?
Hopefully you haven't heard too much about space, because we've got one more
science story for you...
But this time, it's about something very strange.
Scientists working with a radio telescope (無線電望遠鏡) in China have gotten
an unusual signal (訊號) from outer space.
Because it's one of the biggest radio telescopes in the world, scientists say
it could even feel radio waves (無線電波) from a nearby planet (行星).
So Chinese media (中國媒體) released a story about the signal, asking a very
big question...
Could it be from alien life (外星生物)?
Space scientists say they want to find alien life, too, but they say we
should stay realistic (實際), and do more research first.
They say the problem with a telescope this sensitive (敏感) is that it can
sometimes feel too many signals at once.
They say the signal might be something from Earth, and not actually from
alien life.
Until the research is done, they say... don't get too excited, but stay

Cybersecurity and the Future of Online Security
We all know that the internet is a useful tool (工具).
We can find almost anything we need online.
But can we trust everything on the world wide web?
Nowadays, information about anything can easily be found online at any time.
But this also comes with a level of risk (風險).
In the past few years, the government has reported more and more cyberattacks
A cyberattack is when someone uses computers to get into other computer
systems, usually to do harm
Cyberattacks can be very dangerous, because machines and computer systems are
a big part of our everyday lives.
So cybersecurity (網絡安全) is now very important.
The government has set a goal of training 350 cybersecurity experts by 2024.
And most companies have cybersecurity experts working for them.
This means there is a big demand for people who know about cybersecurity.
Is cybersecurity something you want to learn more about, or even build your
future career around?

Climate Change Helps Infectious Diseases Spread
Do you think that extreme climate affects diseases?
Floods, heat waves, and drought are becoming more and more common (普遍) in
recent years.
They are happening all over the world.
And they are also getting more severe (劇烈).
All this extreme weather makes the impact of diseases even worse (更糟糕).
Infectious diseases like malaria and cholera are already dangerous for people.
And things are worse when they happen in places facing extreme weather.
Experts say more than half of infectious diseases have been made worse
because of extreme climate.
For example, heavy downpours (傾盆大雨) cause flooding.
That flooding leads to more disease-carrying mosquitoes and rats.
And these mosquitoes and rats spread diseases to more people.
But overall, scientists say a lot more research needs to be done, to
understand how extreme climate affects disease.

Orcas Clash with Boats in Spain
Spain is facing some problems caused by orcas (虎鯨).
Starting in the summer of 2020, orcas, also called killer whales, have been
bothering boats along the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
Experts are still trying to understand why.
In mild (溫和的) cases, orcas simply get close to boats.
But in serious cases, orcas interfere (干擾) with the boats.
The most serious case involved an orca pod
An orca pod is like an orca family.
They are usually mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins and their children.
The leader of a pod is usually an older female (母虎鯨).
And one orca pod attacked (攻擊) a sailboat.
There were 5 people onboard the boat.
The damaged boat started to sink (沈船).
Luckily, the navy (海軍) came and saved the 5 people on the boat.
But experts say some of these are not exactly attacks.
The experts say the orcas are just checking unfamiliar (陌生的) things around
their home.
And the experts point out that orcas are social creatures
For now, the scientists are asking people to stay as far away from orcas as
they can.
And they say more research is needed to understand how to protect both people
and the orcas.

Big Bag of Money Gets Thrown Away
What should you do if you accidentally throw a large amount of money into the
trash?
Imagine this… you have over 80,000 NT in cash (現金), and you want to
deposit it in the bank (存進銀行) in the morning.
You can't find anywhere to keep the money safe, so you put it in a paper bag
But when the garbage truck (垃圾車) drives by your house, your family throws
the paper bag away!
This might seem like a scene from a movie (電影片段), but it's actually what
happened to a family in Hsinchu last month.
The Hsinchu Bureau of Environmental Protection (新竹環保局) received a phone
call one day, saying that an elderly member of the family
accidentally threw away a paper bag with 80,000 NT inside.
They quickly called the garbage truck workers, who then told the family to go
to the landfill (掩埋場) as soon as possible.
Luckily, after one hour of searching (尋找), the family found their paper bag
with the money.
The garbage truck crew later explained (解釋) that if someone accidentally
throws away something important, they can most likely still recover it (尋獲)
in the first hour.
But after one hour has passed, the garbage truck may have already arrived at
the incinerator (焚化爐).
So remember, always keep your valuables in a safe place…
And if they ever get thrown away, you'd better hurry up!

U.K. Man Makes Money Being Barefoot
Would you ever leave your house and go out into the public without any shoes
on?
Nowadays, shoes are not just a necessity (必需品).
Some people mix and match shoes with different outfits (服裝), and some
people even wear shoes to show off their wealth.
So can you imagine living without shoes for a month?
Well, believe it or not, this is exactly what one man in the U.K. did.
George, a 20-year-old man from Cambridge, England, got rid of his shoes in
October of 2021.
He was originally a "religious shoe-wearer" (鞋子狂熱分子), wearing shoes
both indoors and outdoors.
One day, he suddenly started to question why he needed shoes, and searched
online (網路上尋找) for an answer.
But instead, he found the many benefits (好處) of NOT wearing shoes.
And from that moment on, he decided he was never going to wear shoes again.
After that, many people on the streets looked at him with disdain
(厭惡的表情), and store workers wouldn't let him inside.
But George said he felt happier than he had ever been before, and shared his
experiences on social media.
Since then, millions of people have seen his videos, and his fans (粉絲) have
even sent him money to support his barefoot lifestyle.
Now, George is optimistic (樂觀) about the future, saying that it's only a
matter of time before he makes more money.
But if you're going to go somewhere without shoes, just remember to watch
where you walk!

What Makes People Happy in Different Countries?
There's no doubt that this summer has been one of the hottest in history.
There has been lots of research that strongly suggests the weather affects
our moods and emotions.
A lot of people think that hot and humid weather makes a person cranky
(暴躁易怒), and that cold, dark winters can easily make a person depressed
And results from one study show that people who live in places where the
average monthly temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius are usually the
happiest.
But does this mean people who live in countries near the equator (赤道), or
in very cold countries, are never happy?
Of course not!
So what makes people happy to live in a country?
According to research by the World Values Survey (世界價值觀調查), the level
of people's happiness in a country comes mainly from three things.
Those three things are strong economic development (蓬勃的經濟), democracy
(民主化), and inclusiveness (包容度).
Researchers say that together, these three things help people to feel "free".
So, the next time you are feeling moody or cranky about the weather, think
about these things, before you wish you lived in a different country!

Taiwan and the Worldwide Drought
2022 has been a very challenging year for climates all over the world, Taiwan
included.
News of country-wide droughts have been heard from all over the world,
including the U.S., China, and many countries in Europe.
And at first (最開始), Taiwan began this year with plentiful rainfall
(豐沛的降雨), in the rainy season between May and June.
But by late August, the water in many of Taiwan's reservoirs (水庫) was very
low.
That's because rainfall (降雨) from July to August this year has been 60%
less than average.
Some of the reservoirs even dropped under 50% of the water storage capacity
Many reservoirs in northern Taiwan had already decided to save water, too, by
providing less water pressure (水壓) to homes.
Luckily (幸好), Typhoon Hinnamnor (颱風軒嵐諾) came just in time!
Typhoon Hinnamnor brought lots of water to reservoirs all over the country.
And through the cooperation of Taiwan's homes and water providers (水公司),
the country's water levels were finally able to recover (恢復).
Who knows how much worse things would have gotten if Typhoon Hinnamnor had
decided to bypass Taiwan?

Secret Schools for Afghan Women
Since the U.S. military left Afghanistan, the majority of Afghan girls
haven't been to school in over a year.
The U.S. military (美軍) left Afghanistan on August 30th, 2021, after 20
years of war (戰爭).
But that also left the country to the Taliban (塔利班), who now rule
And according to Taliban tradition, many women are not allowed to have an
education!
That means many women and girls in Afghanistan have been banned (禁止) from
going to school.
In light of so much oppression (壓制), many people started to look for their
own ways of educating young women.
One such person is Sodaba Nazhand, who started an informal school with her
friends in Kabul (喀布爾), Afghanistan's capital (首都).
Sodaba and her friends secretly teach English, math, and science to girls and
young women.
Sodaba says they want to use education as a way to protest (反抗) against the
Taliban.
She says they are teaching girls and young women to stand up for their rights
Going to school can be a lot of hard work... but not everyone has the chance
to learn new things every day.
So try to remember how lucky you are, to be getting an education!

How Many Kinds of 'Vitamin B' Are There?
"Vitamin B" can be an important vitamin to help people focus... but which
kind is best?
There are a total of 8 different kinds of vitamin B, and they can each help
with different bodily functions
To improve energy levels, many people take vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B7.
These can help with metabolism (代謝), and are also found in nuts, eggs, and
milk.
Meanwhile, vitamin B1, B3, B6, and B12 can help with protecting the nervous
These vitamins can be found in chicken, pig liver, and also most kinds of
fish.
There is also one more category of vitamin B, which helps keep red blood
cells healthy.
They are vitamins B6, B9, B12, and they are found in citrus fruits
(柑橘類水果), like oranges, grapefruit, and lemons, and also in spinach and
yogurt.
So vitamin B can be easily found in many of the foods we have for breakfast,
lunch, or dinner!
However, it's important to remember that it doesn't help to take more than
one vitamin B pill per day.
That's because our bodies can only digest and absorb (消化並吸收) a little
bit.
So before you take any vitamins, ask your parents and your doctor which ones
can help your body the most.
And remember, nothing is better than a well-balanced diet, so no matter which
vitamins you take, make sure to eat healthy food every day!
