Marvel has dropped another trailer for its upcoming cosmic comic book movie, Guardians of the Galaxy!

To be honest with you, while I’m a big fan of comic books, I know very little about this particular property. Part of that reason is because I actually grew up with a different team of Marvel superheroes that bore the exact same name. I understand some of those character have shown up in the modern comic series, but I personally have not read a single issue of the new GotG.

This is the Guardians of the Galaxy I grew up with. Yes, I scanned an original at home!

Looking at the new trailer, this is movie is obviously taking a more interstellar look at the Marvel Universe. While we’ve seen threats to the earth from other dimensions (Loki, Malekith) and from the depths of space (the Chitari, thanks to Loki again), most of the villains the Marvel heroes have faced thus far have been very much earth-bound.

Marvel’s taking a bit of a chance with a bunch of heroes that I’m sure most of the movie audience has never heard of, but they’ve hedged their bets by casting some really big names. Chris Pratt is Peter Quill aka Star Lord, Zoe Saldana is Gamora, Bradley Cooper voices Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel voices Groot (though he only has one real line: “I AM GROOT”), and David Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. And that’s just the primary cast!

In the preview we get glimpses of a lot of other characters and actors. Benicio del Toro, Glenn Close, John Reilly, Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace all appear, and there are a few other characters we glimpse that I can’t immediately identify. Del Toro is The Collector, who we first say in the final bit of Thor: The Dark World, when the Norse gods deliver one of the Infinity Gems to him. Who wants to bet that this little piece of cosmic power is going to play a role in the plot for the Guardians? Especially since Gamora, Drax, and another character, Nebula, appear in this film, who all have connections to Thanos, the big bad teased at the end of the first Avengers?

At any rate, it looks like we can expect an action-packed blockbuster in the classic Marvel style, though this one looks like it’ll be somewhat more light-hearted and irreverent than other ones. And it feels like Chris Pratt/Star Lord has almost as much snark in him as Robert Downey Jr./Iron Man. Should be a fun ride.
