Taiwan Celebrates Its National Day

Hi students! Today is a special day for Taiwan. It's Double 10 Day, also
called Taiwan's National Day.
今天是雙十國慶！

October 10th in Taiwan is a day of parades. Military jets fly over people's
heads. And at night, people get to see great fireworks.
今天會有遊行、戰鬥機表演，還有煙火秀！

Almost every country in the world has a national day. There are only two
countries that don't have a national day. One of those countries is Denmark.
The other is Great Britain.
全世界只有丹麥跟英國沒有國慶日。

Some countries even have more than one national day each year.
有些國家還不只有一個國慶日！

Ukraine has 3 national days: in January, July, and August!
烏克蘭有三個國慶日，一月、七月，跟八月都有！

What are some other national days? For Americans, it's July 4th. July 4th
celebrates when America became independent. Before that, America was part of
England. July 4th is also called Independence Day.
美國的國慶日是七月四號，又叫做獨立紀念日。這一天是美國從英國獨立出來的日子。

July 1st is Canada's national day. This national day is called Canada Day. It
celebrates the date that Canada became a country, on July 1, 1867.
加拿大的國慶日在七月一號，也是國家成立的日子。

Taiwan's national day is different from America's or Canada's. But they all
have fireworks!

How to Have a Safe Guy Fawkes Night

Tomorrow is Guy Fawkes Night, it's a great holiday in the UK. They have big
fires and everyone sings and dances! Then, they watch awesome fireworks! It
even has its own rhyme

"Remember, remember, The fifth of November"
It all started long ago, when England had a king. Some people, who did not
like the king, made a plot to kill him! A plot is a very bad plan.

Back then if you tried to kill a king they could chop off your head!

Some very bad people asked a man called Guy Fawkes to kill the king for them

Now, every year in the UK, they celebrate because no-one was hurt. And they
call this holiday Guy Fawkes Night.

This year the UK has some new safety rules: Everyone has to use wood for
their fires, not trash: trash makes dirty smoke. And, they have to check for
animals before lighting any fires.

It's a great holiday. It teaches us about the past, and safety, and it's

First Native American in Space

Today, we are congratulating Nicole Mann, the first Native American to go to
space!
恭喜 Nicole 成為第一個去外太空的美國原住民！

"Native Americans'" are the first people who ever lived in North America.

We have native people here in Taiwan too! In English, they are called
"indigenous".

In Chinese, they are called "Yuan Zhu Min."

A long time ago, there were many, many indigenous people here, but today,
only about 2% of Taiwan's people are indigenous.
台灣以前很多原住民，但現在剩下2%的人口了。

And you know, that's the same as America!
美國現在也是這樣。

Mexico's First Cross-County Hiking Trail

I love walking in the fresh open air. One day I want to go hiking in Mexico!
Last month, Mexico opened their first cross-county hiking trail.
有一天，我想要去墨西哥，因為上個月，他們開放了第一條越野步道。

The trail has many things to see. It starts in Merida. That's a hot city. The
walk goes on for more than one hundred kilometers!

The trail then goes into the jungle. The forest there is wet, and there are
huge plants all around. They have some beautiful birds. I've heard they have
toucan birds! Their faces are red, yellow, and green. So colorful!

Hanukkah Celebrated with Stamp

At this time of year, people like to send special cards to their family and
friends! There are "Happy New Year" cards, 'Merry Christmas' cards… and
there are "Happy Hanukkah" cards, too!
過節的時候，很多人會送卡片！有新年賀卡、有聖誕賀卡，還有光明節賀卡！

Hanukkah is an 8 day Jewish holiday, based on a story from long ago…
光明節是一個八天的猶太節日。這個節日源自於一個古老的故事...

After a big fight, the Jewish people had to rebuild a temple. Inside the
temple was a lamp, with only enough oil to burn for one evening, but it
stayed lit for 8 whole nights!
在一場大戰後，猶太人要重建他們的聖殿。聖殿裡面的油燈原本只能燒一天，但最後竟然燒了整整八天！

Jewish people believe that God must have helped keep the lamp lit. That's why
they light candles during Hanukkah, using a special candlestick called a
"menorah". It has 8 branches for all the candles to go in, one for every
night.
在光明節的時候，他們會用一種特殊的燭台【menorah】，上面可以插8支蠟燭。他們每一晚都會點一支蠟燭。

This year, a new stamp has been made to celebrate Hanukkah in the U.S. On it
is a picture of a beautiful, colorful menorah. They're printing over 10
million Hanukkah stamps, and one of them will even be hung in a museum!
