Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Paz Bueno…
And I'm Nancy Sun.

Two New Check-In Tourist Attractions in Kaohsiung
There are more places for people in Kaohsiung to take photos and enjoy
outdoor activities now!
Two new check-in attractions (打卡景點) have been set up in Kaohsiung.
One is playful and lively, the other one is romantic!
The spots are in Lotus Pond and Cijin.
Lotus Pond attracts many tourists to visit each year, and now, in its
children's park, there is a "Fantasyland" (奇幻樂園).
It used the idea of Alice in Wonderland as a blueprint.
Fantasyland is designed to give everyone a magical journey.
Earlier this year, one of the longest 30-meter zip lines (高空滑索) in
southern Taiwan was set up in the park and attracted many visitors.
And now, they added installations such as playing card soldiers
a lollipop-like carousel (棒棒糖旋轉木馬), and dreamy gorgeous castles
In fact, you need to use a mysterious light-up key in order to get into the
castles.
With immersive design of lighting and music…
The park is like a dream!
On the other side of the town, the Tourism Bureau (觀光局) created a
Mediterranean style (地中海風格) building in the Cijin Shell Gallery
The blue roofs and white walls are making people feel as if they are walking
on the streets of Greece (希臘).
There is also a European manor-style wedding hall (歐式莊園式婚宴廳) next to
the building.
Along with a church in the area, it is definitely giving people a very
romantic atmosphere.
And there is more!
There are also light shows going to happen soon!
There are so many places to visit in Kaohsiung this autumn.

Czech Police Turn Criminal's Ferrari into Patrol Cars
Do you know how much a police car costs?
It is believed that there are some very expensive police cars in Europe.
The country Czech Republic (捷克共和國) in Europe has one of the most
expensive police cars in the world.
Their police drive Ferrari to catch criminals.
Ferrari is one of the most luxurious sports cars in the world.
Their police seized the cars from criminals, and turned them into patrol cars
When they got them, they had to spend about $14,000 U.S. dollars to retro-fit
(改裝) the cars…
Because Ferraris are usually red, but the police cars there are yellow and
blue.
Now when police need to catch aggressive road rage drivers (行車問題) and
street racers (飆車族)…
They are fast enough to chase them!

Feeling Hungry Can Make Us Feel "hangry"
Do you know the word "hangry"?
It's a feeling of being hungry and angry.
The word started being used from 1918 and now many people are using it.
It is even in a modern English dictionary.
UK researchers did an experiment on 64 volunteers, from the ages of 18 to 60
years old.
They asked them to complete a survey (問卷) on a smartphone app.
They had to do the survey five times a day for twenty-one days.
Then they examined them to see how hunger affects (影響) their emotions in
their daily lives.
And it showed many people getting angry due to hunger.
It is now believed to be a diagnosable feeling
The research tells us that when we feel hungry, we usually don't feel good
and the irritating feelings (惱人的感覺) could come up (出現).
So next time, if you're feeling hungry, remember to eat something and don't
get angry!

Amsterdam Rainbow Dress Displayed in Taipei
The month of October is observed as LGBT History Month in many countries
around the world.
That includes Taiwan, too!
On Saturday, the 20th Taiwan LGBT Pride Parade (第20屆臺灣同志遊行) took
place at the Taipei City Hall Plaza.
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
The event featured many options for visitors to enjoy, including a Rainbow
Market, stage shows, and speeches from advocacy groups
One of the special attractions was the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress.
It's 16 meters wide, and is made up of flags from 68 countries where
homosexuality is illegal.
The dress' creators remove a country's flag when it legalizes homosexuality
They replace (取代) it with a rainbow flag when that happens.
That means the dress is a "living" work of art, because it changes and
evolves over time.
Since 2016, only nine countries' flags have been removed.
The dress has traveled around the world in the last six years.

California State Approves Digital License Plates
Quick! What kind of information can you collect when you see a vehicle
breaking the law?
Why, you write down the license plate number (車牌號), of course!
The US State of California has recently passed a law making it legal to use
digital license plates on vehicles.
Right now, only one company makes these types of electric license plates.
They're calling them "Rplates", and it has an e-ink screen
It looks like a regular tablet (平板), like an iPad, but the screen looks and
feels like paper.
E-ink screens can show images even without electricity!
People with digital license plates can handle their paperwork
(處理他們的證件) online, and manage the license (管理車牌) using an app on
their phone.
People who use these digital license plates can also customize (定制) the
messages displayed on it.
For example, if the car has been stolen, the owner can change the message to
let other people know.
The license plates can also track the cars (追?
Although some people feel that it could be a privacy problem
It's also quite expensive.
The technologically-advanced (科技先進的) license plates cost almost
10-thousand NT a year!

Filipino Athlete Breaks Another Jump Rope Record
The Guinness World Records has a long list of incredible feats achieved by
human beings.
From making the biggest pizza in the world to becoming the fastest man alive,
it's amazing what people can do when they set a goal and work hard.
Most people might celebrate this kind of achievement (成就) and move on, but
one Filipino athlete decided he wanted to go further
Ryan Alonzo, who is also known as "Skipman," has set his second Guinness
World Record in jump rope!
Jump rope is a high-intensity activity that uses all the muscles in the body.
There are different ways you can jump over a rope, including freestyle,
crossover, and double -under skips.
And Alonzo broke world records in two jumping styles.
He set a record in 2021 for performing 40,980 double-under skips in under 12
hours.
That means the rope goes around the body twice in a single jump.
And this month, Alonzo completed 3,371 consecutive crossovers
That's done by crossing the arms in and out while skipping over the rope.
Alonzo says having endurance (耐力) was important for both records.
It shows that practice and determination (練習和決心) are useful when you
want to reach a goal.

Taipei's New Animal Rescue Hotline
Are you an animal lover?
Then you should definitely know about this.
Taipei now has a new hotline for helping animals.
The Taipei City Animal Protection Office says people who see an animal in
danger can call the number "1959".
It's easy to remember, because it sounds like "you save, I save" (你救我救)
in Mandarin.
The city has had a hotline to help animals since 2010.
But this new number is easier to remember.
The office says people in the city can call this number if they see animals
that are sick or hurt.
The hotline is free.
And it is open 24 hours every day.
Officials say last year, the hotline took almost 10,000 calls.
1,300 were for cats and dogs.
And more than 4,000 were about other kinds of animals.
The office says callers should know where the animal is.
They should also know the animal's condition
Then they should follow the instructions given by the hotline representative.

Banksy Art Appears in Ukraine
And the Banksy mystery continues!
Banksy (班克西) is a famous artist.
But no one knows who he or she really is!
This U.K. artist is famous for graffiti art
Grafitti is art that is drawn or painted on public places.
Graffiti art usually has a special meaning or message.
And it's usually made without permission
Banksy's art work has appeared in public places all over the world.
And now, the artist has made seven new works of art in Ukraine.
People first noticed the art work in the city of Borodyanka.
The city has been hit by Russian bombs many times.
It was taken over by Russia's army for a while during the war.
And Ukrainian soldiers took back the city in April of this year.
After this, people began noticing graffiti in Banksy's special style in the
city, and in other cities in Ukraine.
One of the works shows a female gymnast, balancing (倒立,平衡) on broken
rocks, outside a building hit by bombs.
Another shows a little boy in a martial arts uniform, flipping a man onto his
back.

Taiwan Bill to Fine Drivers for Not Yielding to Pedestrians Passes 1st Reading
Taiwan is famous for many things.
But not all of them are good things.
One of them is the hectic (忙碌的) traffic conditions in the cities.
Vehicles should yield to the pedestrians crossing the road.
But in Taiwan, sometimes pedestrians have to look out for vehicles because
some do not yield.
News agency CNN recently claimed that Taiwan has "battlefield-like" traffic
conditions.
However, that may change soon.
The Traffic Management and Penalty Act (道路交通管理處罰條例) already imposes
fines of $1200 NT to $3600 NT for drivers who do not yield to pedestrians.
But the law does not apply to all intersections, only designated (指定的)
crosswalks.
Many people criticized the law as too lenient (寬容).
So an amendment was made to raise the penalty to $6000 NT in order to further
protect pedestrians.
If a pedestrian is hurt because a driver didn't yield, the driver's license
will be suspended (吊銷).
The government hopes to improve road safety and raise public awareness.

Farmers' Groups Against New Zealand's Cow Burp Tax
We know that global warming is a big issue.
Many countries are doing their best to save the climate.
Many factories have to pay tax for the exhaust (廢氣) they produce.
Even fossil fuel vehicles have to pay tax for their exhaust.
How about charging animals for the gases they produce?
This is happening in New Zealand.
New Zealand is a country that has more livestock (牲畜) than people.
Cows produce methane (甲烷) that is known to contribute to global warming.
The country has over 6 million cows and 26 million sheep.
With so many animals in the country, New Zealand aims to reduce gas emissions
The government proposed a plan to tax farmers for the farts and burps of
livestock.
This led tomajor protests (抗議) among farmers across the country.
A spokesperson for the farmers said it was not fair to charge for a problem
that actually has no solution.
As long as humans drink milk and eat meat, livestock are needed.
The farmers cannot control the burping and farting of their animals.
The government then made some minor changes to the plan.
However, the farmers are still not convinced (說服).
They claim that the tax will not reduce gas emissions, but will instead make
food more expensive.

3D Printing Wood
Trees are essential to humans.
We use it to make furniture, paper, build houses, and much more.
Many trees are cut down every day to make these products.
A survey (調查) shows that since the beginning of human civilization (文明),
we have wiped out 54 percent of the total tree population on Earth.
That really is a lot of trees.
But thanks to the scientists at MIT, deforestation (砍伐森林) is no longer
needed to produce wood.
They successfully made customizable (客製化) wood in their lab from the cells
of a flower plant.
They say this allows them to bio-print pieces of wood, of any shape and size.
This means if you need a wooden table or a chair, you can directly produce it
from the cells.
Scientists are still working on this technology, but it might help us stop
deforestation.

Taiwan Hotels Need Workers
The COVID-19 pandemic has made life difficult for many.
The tourism industry (產業) has also been struggling.
Many people who work in tourism-related companies have lost their jobs.
But now, many countries are opening their borders again.
And more people are traveling again.
Now there is a new problem.
There is a major labor shortage (短缺).
This means there aren't enough workers to do all the work.
This shortage of manpower is so serious that even a manager of a luxury hotel
has said he has to help with housekeeping
Another hotel had to reject reservations for thousands of tables because they
didn't have enough workers.
Industry analysts (產業分析師) believe that the job market has changed in big
way.
Many look for jobs in the tech sector, because of its stability despite the
pandemic.
A hotel manager even said young people are finding food delivery jobs or jobs
as internet influencers (網紅).
They are afraid that if another wave of the pandemic strikes, they would lose
their jobs.
Some hotels are raising pay, to try to attract workers.
This may not completely solve the problem.

Italy Testing Travelers from China for COVID-19
China has changed its zero-COVID policy.
Since then, Chinese travelers have been taking trips to other countries.
Authorities in Milan, Italy said half of the passengers on two flights from
China tested positive (陽性).
As a result, Italy will begin testing all arrivals from China for COVID-19.
And they hope that other European countries will do the same.
However, not all EU countries are responding to Italy's request.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention Control (ECDC) considered the test
"unjustified" (不正當).
ECDC said that the BF.7 omicron variant (變種) that was hitting China hard
was already in Europe.
Therefore, it is not a significant (重大) threat to the EU.
According to the World Health Organization, over 80% of the people in Western
Europe have been vaccinated.
This might be one of the reasons that some European countries are not making
the test mandatory (強制).
No matter what policies other countries are implementing...
Wearing a mask still seems to be a good way to protect yourself from COVID-19.

Boredom Can Be a Good Thing
What do you do when you feel bored?
Most would take out their phones to play a game, watch a video or surf their
social media.
This is an era when people hate to get bored.
But what if being bored is actually a good thing?
According to a new study, the distraction (分心) of social media could be
stopping our minds from getting to a deeper, more complete feeling of
boredom.
Researchers say that complete boredom can help us be more innovative (創新).
We sometimes get bored when we're waiting for something.
But this boredom is only superficial (淺層).
We stop being bored like this if we turn to our cell phone.
This means we never get into deep boredom.
Researchers studied the lives of people who were in lockdown during the
pandemic.
Some of those who experienced deep boredom had feelings of restlessness
(煩躁) and emptiness (空虛).
But many others discovered things they loved to do, like carpentry, baking,
and so on.
The researchers came to the conclusion that not being deeply bored might be
stopping us from finding more meaningful things.
Next time you feel bored, don't be so quick to pick up your phone.
Who knows? Maybe you can discover a new passion, or come up with a great idea.
