Hi and welcome to News Bites!
I'm Philip Brossard, and I'm Nancy Sun!
Today we have a serious talk about Taiwan getting recognized for trying to
stop criminals from making money.
We have a story from the United States president, who says he could be
meeting with the leader of North Korea for a fourth time.
And we hear about how Taylor Swift has a really nice dad.
-----------------------
Taiwan to Top Anti-Money Laundering Review Category
Taiwan will be added to the list of countries with the best anti-money
laundering 洗錢防制 practices in the world.
"To launder" means "to clean," like cleaning your clothes, but here it means
to make illegal money look like it is legal.
Taiwan's Anti-Money Laundering Office says an inter-governmental organization
跨政府組織 against money laundering recently approved of Taiwan after
checking the government's practices.
"Inter-" means "between," and you can hear it in the word "international"
國際.
According to the Anti-Money Laundering Office, that approval should
officially 正式地 put Taiwan in the most favorable category.
"Official" here means other people believe Taiwan now has good anti-money
laundering practices.
Taiwan's government workers say the change should happen in about six weeks,
after the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering officially finalizes 審定
the decision.
"To finalize" means to end the discussion on a certain topic and make a
decision.
----------------------------------
US President Donald Trump says he'll probably meet again with North Korean
leader Kim Jong Un.
At the meeting, they will talk about Pyongyang's nuclear weapons
program.
The two leaders have met three times before, in Singapore, Vietnam, and at
the Korean Demilitarized Zone
North and South Korea need a demilitarized zone because the two countries are
still officially at war.
The U.S. and North Korea haven't reached an agreement for Kim Jong Un to give
up 放棄 its nuclear weapons.
"To give up" means to stop trying to do something and leave it alone.
North Korea has recently been testing more rockets
Trump says he's not happy about the tests.
-------------------------
Taylor Swift's Dad is a Good Guy
Taylor Swift's dad is a really good guy.
Taylor was doing a big performance to announce the release of her latest
album in New York.
She was doing a free show where she sang three songs, two from the new album,
Me! and You Need to Calm Down, and one from her old ones, Shake it Off.
Free, 免費, means you don't have to pay for something.
To get places in the free concert, fans of hers were camping out overnight to
make sure they got in.
Taylor had brought her parents with her for this performance, and they saw
the fans waiting outside, and they were astonished that people were waiting
like that.
So her dad joined in with her aides who were handing out pizza to the fans
for them to eat.
He also gave them some special guitar picks made for the music's release.
--------------------------
Now to recap the stories from today's News Bites
Taiwan will be added to the list of countries with the best anti-money
"To launder" means to take something that is dirty and make it clean again,
like clothes or illegal money.
An inter-governmental organization 跨政府組織 against money laundering looked
at Taiwan's practices to decide if they were good enough to be on the list.
"Inter-" means "between," and can be found in other English words like
"international" 國際.
--------------------------
US President Donald Trump says he will probably meet again with the leader of
North Korea, Kim Jong Un.
They have met three times before, and want to talk again about North Korea's
Trump wants Kim to give up 放棄 his weapons, but Kim doesn't want to.
"To give up" means to stop trying to do something anymore.
--------------------------
The father of Taylor Swift recently did something really nice for her fans.
The famous singer had a free 免費 concert for her new album, and a lot of
people were waiting all night so they could hear it.
"Free" means you don't have to pay any money.
Taylor Swift's dad was surprised to see so many people waiting, so he helped
give them pizza to eat while they waited.
He also gave them special guitar picks to keep.
And that's it for today's News Bites!

some say they are more harmful than helpful. Do you think schools should have
uniforms for students?
Record your message and send it to newsbites@icrt.com.tw with your name and

Taipei's First Santo Nino Beats for Peace Festival
Can you hear that happy music?
Yes! And look, there's a parade (遊行) of people coming.
Wow, they're all wearing, beautiful, colorful costumes.
I wonder what for?
It's the Santo Nino Beats for Peace Festival!
This year, the Filipino community in Taiwan (在台灣的菲律賓僑胞) took to the
street to celebrate Santo Nino de Cebu.
Who is Santo Nino de Cebu?
Santo Nino de Cebu is the Roman Catholic name for baby Jesus. Jesus is the
most important figure in the Roman Catholic religion.
Santo Nino de Cebu
And lots of people in the Philippines are Roman Catholic.
Oh, right. Hundreds of years ago Spain colonized the Philippines. Back then,
most of Spain was Roman Catholic.
Spanish colonizers left behind a statue of the baby Jesus. This was later
found by Portuguese explorers and given to a queen of the Philippines.
Now, people in the Philippines hold a celebration (慶祝) of when they first
accepted (接受) the Catholic religion.
And they hold one in Taipei, too!
This year there were dance groups, cheerful music, and a competition with an
award (獎賞) for the best dancers.
It all happened in central Taipei.
The group than won the dance competition got 30 thousand Taiwanese dollars!
It sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe we can go and watch next year!

Dogs Can Recognize Their Owner's Voices
A new study has found that dogs may be able to recognize (認出) the voices of
their owners.
Well, this might not be a surprise to those of you that have dogs.
You probably think, "of course my dog recognizes me!"
But before, it was thought that dogs used other things like sight (視覺) and
smell (嗅覺) to recognize their owners.
Recently, scientists in Hungary (匈牙利) invited 28 dogs and owners to play a
game of hide and seek (躲貓貓).
In the experiment (實驗), owners hid (躲藏) in one hiding place. Strangers
(陌生人) hid in another.
For each dog, the scientists played the sound of its owner from their hiding
place. And they played the sound of the stranger from the other.
They wanted to see if the dogs could recognize their owner's voice from a
distance.
Well, they found that in 82 percent of games, the dogs could tell which their
owner's voice was!
But even from a distance… a dog's sense of smell is very good.
In fact, it's 40 times better than a human's sense of smell.
So the scientists had to think about this.
To make the experiment fair, sometimes they played each dog's owner's voice
from the place the stranger was hiding.
And…most of the dogs ran to the stranger!
Dogs may be smarter than we think… good boy!

Baby Shark gets a movie
Who DOESN'T remember the song "Baby Shark"?
The preschool (幼稚園) song which went viral six years ago is about to become
a full-length movie (一部完整的電影).
It's also going to be made into a TV show called "Baby Shark's Big Show."
The movie is being produced by American children's entertainment (娛樂)
company Nickelodeon and Korea's Pinkfong.
Other than that (除此之外), no details about the film, or the TV show have
been released.
This is not the first time Baby Shark is starring in its own film.
An hour-long show called "Pinkfong and Baby Shark's Space Adventure" was
released, but you can only catch the show on Netflix.
You can also watch the original two-minute YouTube video which has been
downloaded (下載) more than 10 billion times.

Scooter Helmets, Pancake Race, Mila Kunis
Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Ryan Drillsma...
And I'm Clifford Chu...
In today's news:
Scooter helmet as art, a pancake race, and an actress helps refugees.
All that and more, coming up next.

Man Turns Scooter Helmets into Art
It's always important to remember that safety comes first when you're out on
the road.
Lots of people in Taiwan drive scooters (機車) to get to places.
You may have ridden one with your parents or grandparents.
But what's one thing you should always remember when riding a scooter?
That's right! You need to wear a helmet (安全帽).
Helmets are important because they can protect your head if you have an
accident.
They have an important purpose (目的), but…I think they can look pretty
cool, too!
You can buy helmets in lots of different colors and designs (款式).
But have you ever thought of them as art?
Well, one man called Lee An in Taichung does.
He makes custom helmets for people using his skills as an artist.
Lee An has his own studio (工作室) where he does lots of custom painting work.
If something is custom-made, it means it is made especially for one person,
and they chose how they wanted it to be made.
Lee An paints both motorcycles and helmets.
But neither come cheap!
He painted a picture of Harley Quinn (哈莉·奎茵) from the DC Comic world on
a helmet for one customer… and that customer paid 30 thousand NT!
But having Lee paint your motorbike might cost 100 thousand dollars, or even
more.
Hmm… maybe in the future…when I have more money… and I can drive.

American Woman wins British Pancake Race
Ready… set… go!
I love a good race.
Competition (比賽) is exciting!
But what are these competitors (參賽者) holding?
Well, they're frying pans (煎鍋). And do you know what's in the frying pans?
Bacon?
Close! It's… pancakes (鬆餅)!
But why?
March 1st this year was a special Christian holiday known as Shrove Tuesday.
It's the day before many Christians sacrifice (犧牲) something in the six
weeks before Easter. Usually this means giving up eating something they
enjoy…like chocolate.
And on Shrove Tuesday, it's tradition (傳統) to eat pancakes.
But one town in the UK called Olney has a slightly different tradition… they
race with the pancakes first!
People must carry pancakes in a frying pan in a 380 meter race - the fastest
person wins!
But the contestants must also flip (翻) their pancake in the air at the
beginning and end of the race.
This year, the winner was actually a woman from the US.
She won with a time of one minute and seven seconds.
The Olney pancake race has been happening for over 600 years but it became an
international competition in 1950.
Both kids and adults join it!
Hmm… maybe if I'm in England next Shrove Tuesday, I can try, too!

American actress Mila Kunis helps her home country
Did you know that American actress Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine?
It should be no surprise then, that she is helping her home country by
raising money (募款) to help Ukraine's refugees (難民)
Kunis and her husband Aston Kutcher are trying to raise (募集) $30 million
dollars.
They donated (捐獻) 3 million dollars out of their own pocket (自己掏腰包) -
which is about 10 percent of the total.
When she announced the campaign (活動) to raise money, Kunis said she sees
herself as American.
But she said she has never felt more proud to be Ukrainian.
After three days, Kunis raised more than $16 million dollars.

Puppy Rescued from Plastic Pipe
Can you hear that sound? What is it?
It sounds like an animal! It sounds like a dog… maybe even a puppy!
If you have a dog you may recognize (認出來) the different sounds it makes
when it needs different things.
Like if it wants to play… or it wants food… or if it's in danger (危險).
Some people in Kaohsiung recently heard what they thought was the sound of a
puppy in distress (遇險).
They followed the sound and found that a puppy had become stuck in a plastic
pipe.
It had really become stuck and couldn't get out, because the pipe only
measures 10 centimeters across.
The people told Animal Rescue Team Taiwan what had happened.
They were worried the puppy might not come out again, and that it could have
starved to death (餓死).
The team immediately sent volunteers (志工) to the location in Kaohsiung.
They tried to lift the pipe up and let the puppy fall out. But it couldn't.
The pipe was too small.
So they had no choice but to use a saw and cut through the pipe.
Luckily, they managed to cut through it in under 40 minutes. The puppy was
not hurt.
But they did say it was suffering from dehydration (脫水) and malnourishment
Poor dog!
The Animal Rescue Team said they will help the puppy find a new home once it
recovers.
That's great news!

Monkeys Play to Avoid Conflict
And speaking of animals… have you ever heard of a howler monkey (吼猴)?
It sounds a little like this…
That's right, they're howling (吼叫)! Howling is usually what we say to
describe the sound of a wolf… but these monkeys definitely howl.
They live in South and Central America in countries like Mexico (墨西哥) and
Costa Rica (哥斯大黎加).
Scientists have done a new study on howler monkeys.
They've found that howler monkeys use play to avoid conflict (鬥爭).
That means when they're angry… they try to play instead of fighting. Isn't
that nice?
The scientists looked at seven groups of monkeys. They found that adult
monkeys actually play more than children.
And they found that the monkeys play more when they are foraging for fruit.
Foraging for fruit is something that usually causes conflict… because there
isn't always enough fruit for everybody.
But why do they play together?
Playing uses up a lot of energy (精力)… energy that would otherwise be used
for fighting.
And how do they play?
They hang from trees with their tails and make silly faces at each other.
That's right, they make funny faces!
Maybe next time you are angry with a friend… you can make silly faces at
each other… and see if it helps avoid conflict for people, too!

Rare Star Wars Poster Up for Auction
Are you a fan of Star Wars?
A super-rare poster that was used to promote the first Star Wars movie is
going up for auction (拍賣) for charity.
It shows all the main characters, including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and
Princess Leia.
Only a small number of these posters were made.
That makes it super rare.
It's being sold in the UK alongside around 500 other special pieces from TV
and films.
The starting bid (最低出價) for the auction will be 10 pounds.
But experts think it will sell for much more than that.
The money the seller makes will be donated towards helping people that are
fleeing Ukraine because of war.
The poster was made by brothers Greg and Tim Hildebrandt who did lots of
designs for sci-fi shows.
