From Cow Poop to Clear Water
In India, many communities need to clean their dirty water. It's not easy.
Many cleaning systems use chemicals and energy. They need workers.

plants clean the water! And clear water comes out!
The man's cleaning system works! People can use this water for plants and
toilets. More than three hundred communities use this system now. It has
cleaned two billion liters of water. That's a lot of water!

Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...

In today's news:
Chinese classes for foreigners, Minecraft classes for the world, and Arthur
finishes 26 years on TV.
All that and more, coming up next.

Taoyuan Offers Foreign Workers Mandarin Classes
Have you ever tried to learn a new language?
If you're listening to News Bites, then you probably have!
But many people in Taiwan have spent more time learning English...
So maybe you don't realize (沒發現) how difficult it is to learn to speak and
read Chinese.
Of course, radio, TV, and books can help a lot with learning a new language,
but there's nothing better than having a good teacher!
And right now, there are many people who need to work in Taiwan, but don't
speak Chinese as their first language, and might not have enough money for
classes.
So the city of Taoyuan is starting to offer free (免費的) Chinese classes to
migrant workers (移工).
The free classes are to help people who have moved to Taiwan from other
countries, like Indonesia (印尼), Vietnam (越南), the Philippines (菲律賓),
and Thailand (泰國).
The classes will focus (集中在、專注於) on Chinese that people can use in the
workplace, and to have a comfortable life in the city.
And the more Chinese they learn, the easier it will be for them to be a part
of Taiwanese society.
The classes start from March 6th, and will go until April 24th.
Remember, if you are learning a second or a third language other than
Chinese, you are already very lucky (幸運).
It's not easy now, but it will definitely make your life easier in the future
Just remember to thank your teachers!

Teachers Say Minecraft Can Be A Good Learning Tool
Almost 13 years ago, in 2009, one man made a video game (電動遊戲) by himself.
He used his programming skills (寫電腦程序的技能) to make an entire world in
his computer.
And two years later, with help from more people, the game quickly became very
famous (有名).
It's called Minecraft (當個創世神,也被稱為麥塊), and now millions of people
are playing it!
But many teachers are saying that it's not just a game... it could also be a
good learning tool (教學工具)!
There are many ways to make learning more interesting, but one of the best
ways is to make a lesson into a game.
This is called "gamification" (遊戲化).
Gamification makes it easier for people, especially kids, to stay engaged
(互動、參與) in learning new things.
And because of this, some teachers are starting to see how Minecraft could be
helpful in classes about science (科學), technology (科技), engineering
(工程), and math (數學).
The company Microsoft (微軟) has even made an educational version (教學版本)
of the game, for use in schools.
Teachers say it's not just a class about the game... and it's not just a
gamification of reality.
It's a balance (平衡) between both, and can teach kids about the connections
between them.
We play games to have fun, but they can also teach us a lot about our world.
And the more we learn about our world, the more we're ready to create our own!

TV Cartoon 'Arthur' Ends
The TV show "Arthur" (亞瑟小子) is finally ending, after 26 years.
That makes it the longest-running (播出、持續最久的) cartoon on U.S.
television!
It's a show about a young aardvark (土豚) named Arthur, and his family and
friends.
And it first aired in the year 1996!
Many people say he taught a generation of children about kindness, empathy,
and inclusion.
The final episode looks at the future, and predicts (預測) what life will be
like for Arthur and his friends in 20 years.
The show won many awards (獎項), like four Daytime Emmys (艾美獎), and a
BAFTA Children's Award (英國電影金像獎).
But Arthur isn't disappearing for good!
Social media promise Arthur will be back in reruns, a new podcast (播客), and
short videos.
Which cartoon do you think will take Arthur's place, for the next generation
of children?

Hey there, and welcome to News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Paz Bueno.
In today's news:

summer heat.
Stay tuned for those stories, coming up next!

Big Bag of Money Gets Thrown Away
What should you do if you accidentally throw a large amount of money into the
trash?
Imagine this… you have over 80,000 NT in cash (現金), and you want to
deposit it in the bank (存進銀行) in the morning.
You can't find anywhere to keep the money safe, so you put it in a paper bag
But when the garbage truck (垃圾車) drives by your house, your family throws
the paper bag away!
This might seem like a scene from a movie (電影片段), but it's actually what
happened to a family in Hsinchu last month.
The Hsinchu Bureau of Environmental Protection (新竹環保局) received a phone
call one day, saying that an elderly member of the family
accidentally threw away a paper bag with 80,000 NT inside.
They quickly called the garbage truck workers, who then told the family to go
to the landfill (掩埋場) as soon as possible.
Luckily, after one hour of searching (尋找), the family found their paper bag
with the money.
The garbage truck crew later explained (解釋) that if someone accidentally
throws away something important, they can most likely still recover it (尋獲)
in the first hour.
But after one hour has passed, the garbage truck may have already arrived at
the incinerator (焚化爐).
So remember, always keep your valuables in a safe place…
And if they ever get thrown away, you'd better hurry up!

U.K. Man Makes Money Being Barefoot
Would you ever leave your house and go out into the public without any shoes
on?
Nowadays, shoes are not just a necessity (必需品).
Some people mix and match shoes with different outfits (服裝), and some
people even wear shoes to show off their wealth.
So can you imagine living without shoes for a month?
Well, believe it or not, this is exactly what one man in the U.K. did.
George, a 20-year-old man from Cambridge, England, got rid of his shoes in
October of 2021.
He was originally a "religious shoe-wearer" (鞋子狂熱分子), wearing shoes
both indoors and outdoors.
One day, he suddenly started to question why he needed shoes, and searched
online (網路上尋找) for an answer.
But instead, he found the many benefits (好處) of NOT wearing shoes.
And from that moment on, he decided he was never going to wear shoes again.
After that, many people on the streets looked at him with disdain
(厭惡的表情), and store workers wouldn't let him inside.
But George said he felt happier than he had ever been before, and shared his
experiences on social media.
Since then, millions of people have seen his videos, and his fans (粉絲) have
even sent him money to support his barefoot lifestyle.
Now, George is optimistic (樂觀) about the future, saying that it's only a
matter of time before he makes more money.
But if you're going to go somewhere without shoes, just remember to watch
where you walk!

What Makes People Happy in Different Countries?
There's no doubt that this summer has been one of the hottest in history.
There has been lots of research that strongly suggests the weather affects
our moods and emotions.
A lot of people think that hot and humid weather makes a person cranky
(暴躁易怒), and that cold, dark winters can easily make a person depressed
And results from one study show that people who live in places where the
average monthly temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius are usually the
happiest.
But does this mean people who live in countries near the equator (赤道), or
in very cold countries, are never happy?
Of course not!
So what makes people happy to live in a country?
According to research by the World Values Survey (世界價值觀調查), the level
of people's happiness in a country comes mainly from three things.
Those three things are strong economic development (蓬勃的經濟), democracy
(民主化), and inclusiveness (包容度).
Researchers say that together, these three things help people to feel "free".
So, the next time you are feeling moody or cranky about the weather, think
about these things, before you wish you lived in a different country!
