LoveBoatTaiwan.clip3Filmmaker Valerie Soe discusses her ongoing documentary film project, Love Boat: Taiwan, which will cover an historic cultural enrichment program that was aimed at helping young people of Taiwanese heritage living overseas visit Taiwan and get in touch with their roots.

Running from the 1960s all the way up to 2013, the program was officially known as the Overseas Compatriot Youth Summer Formosa Study Tour to Taiwan. Unofficially though, it went by a different name: the “Love Boat.” We discuss how a modest government program involving language classes and calligraphy came to be known most widely for its romantic opportunities and as a rite of passage for generations of young Taiwanese living around the world.
