The island group of Penghu off southwest Taiwan has been listed by Agoda.com as an emerging tour destination in Asia in 2015.
International accommodation booking site Agoda says two reasons why travelers must not miss Penghu are its unique dialect and lifestyle.
Penghu was picked for the first time since Agoda in 2011 began to compile an annual list of emerging Asian travel hotspots that each offer fewer than 70 accommodation options.
The website says visitors to Penghu can ride a bicycle or a motorcycle, or rent an electric bike to tour the island at an easy pace, appreciating the humble and rustic beauty of fishing villages along the way.
The Penghu archipelago also has the highest concentration of temples in Taiwan, and is home to the country’s oldest temple dedicated to Matsu, the goddess of the sea, according to the online travel service.
Apart from natural attractions like unique basalt pillars and the ancient twin-heart-shaped fish trap in Qimei Township, Penghu also has lots of seafood and local delicacies to satisfy even the pickiest tastes, Agoda said.
Other destinations listed were Chitwan National Park in Nepal, Pangandaran in Indonesia, Yufu City in Japan, Kodagu in India, Buriram in Thailand, Mount Emei in China, and Sokcho in South Korea.
The Taiwan destinations of Hualien, Nantou, Kaohsiung and Kenting have all been selected in the past on Agoda’s annual list.
