It was a chilly night a month or two ago in Taipei and I was walking near Shin Kong Mitsukoshi across from Taipei Main Station when I stumbled upon the work of Gary Tu. His work was showcased in big, blown up prints and I stood there like a happy, little art nerd with a smile on my face because it was so reminiscent of my own work as well as one of my other favorite fashion illustrators Stina Persson. I stood there for several minutes admiring the splashes of color and the simplicity of his work, and I quickly typed his name on my phone so I could look up more of his work later.

When I got home I began Googling like crazy trying to find any kind of information that I could on Gary and his art, but it was a lot harder than I thought. Then I came across his Facebook page and instantly became enamored with his illustrations. They’re absolutely gorgeous!

Turns out Gary is an up-and-coming artist in the fashion world, and he’s already had a lot of success in recent years. He’s based in Taipei and he uses watercolor paint to create his fluid, fashion illustrations. Just last month he released a book compiling some of his best works. Sadly, I didn’t get my hands on this limited-print book when he was doing pre-orders, but if I ever manage to find it in stores I’ll be sure to snag a copy for myself.

If you’d like to see Gary’s work up close and personal, he’ll be holding an exhibition at Katy has a Loft, a women’s clothing shop in Taipei, starting on December 20, and will run till January 20, 2015.

For details on the exhibition, visit the event’s Facebook page or Gary Tu’s personal Facebook page.
