Like many of the biggest stars of our time, 21-year-old California girl Tori Kelly started her career participating in singing competitions. She competed in Star Search at 10 years old, and later won on America’s Most Talented Kids in 2004. When none of these opportunities led to record deals that fit her musical style, she took to Youtube to begin releasing acoustic covers. It was a smart move – as it led to the now over 1 million channel subscribers, an album, a US and European tour, and even a soundtrack gig for the 2014 blockbuster, The Giver (see video above). Did I mention she also went on tour with Ed Sheeran as his opening act?

Her Youtube stardom all began with a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You,” accompanied by fellow Youtube musician Angie Girl. Their unique acoustic cover of the smash hit went viral, reaching 21 million hits.

As she continued to produce one smash acoustic cover after another, she decided to take it to the next step and create her own record label. She produced her first original album, Handmade Songs, available on iTunes. She has since produced several EPs, and co-directed two music videos. She has collaborated with artists ranging from Chicago dancer Ian Eastwood and Youtube star Todrick Hall, to superstars like Professor Green, Ariana Grande, and Sam Smith.

Check out her live performance of “Paper Hearts,” from her debut album, Handmade Songs.

In just the few years since she’s established her music career, Kelly has become the embodiment of young talent, allowed to musically flourish with artistic freedom with the help of the Youtube generation. With another album set to be released in 2015, she’s an artist that many acoustic lovers should keep on their radar.
