Ben Sollee The Hollow SessionsThere’s a lot of music out there that we just don’t play on the air here at ICRT. In fact, most of my favorite bands of all-time are quite unknown to the masses, and I wish they’d get more exposure.

I’m always hunting for new music and new sounds, and when I find something good I tend to share that music with others. So, while yes, I have not been updating the blog very much recently due to being super busy, I have found some music that perhaps could tickle your fancy.

I honestly can’t remember when I can across Ben Sollee’s music several years ago, but I remember how folksy and comforting it felt to me.  For those that don’t know about this musician, Ben is an American cellist and singer-songwriter.  He incorporates percussion, mandolin, guitar, banjo and other instruments or unorthodox methods to create sounds for his music.  His style is a mix between folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B.

For his latest album, The Hollow Sessions, Ben decided to spend the summer making music based on what influenced him and his own style.  In a makeshift recording studio in Kentucky he began recording covers of the songs by Fiona Apple, Tom Waits, Otis Redding, Arthur Russell, Paul Simon, Harry Belafonte, Howard Finster, The Zombies and more.  The recordings are rough and hollow, but there is something very warm and nostalgic about them.

If indie-folk music is your thing, then you can sample or download Ben’s album on Noisetrade

Ben Sollee also performed at TEDx in San Diego:
