A documentary showing Taiwan’s reconstruction in the wake of 2009’s Typhoon Morakot will premiere on the National Geographic channel today in Taiwan.

“Rebuilding Taiwan: Beyond the Storm” will air at 9 p.m. on the fifth anniversary of the date Morakot ripped through Taiwan, causing destruction that killed 681 and left 18 missing.

An international film crew spent more than a year shooting the documentary, which will also broadcast in more than 40 countries across Asia.

Also today, there will be an opening ceremony of a permanent exhibition on the rebuilding efforts and results.

The exhibition will be housed at the National Science and Technology Museum in Kaohsiung — home to many of the hardest-hit areas by the two-thousand-and-nine storm.

Artifacts and documents on the stories behind the difficult reconstruction process will also be on display, to provide visitors deeper insights into the recovery process for the affected areas in central and southern Taiwan.
