Man Runs Across Africa

Marathons are very long runs. They're about 42 kilometers long! Many people
never run a marathon. But one British man ran 385 marathons in less than a
year!
馬拉松是一種長跑的運動，全程差不多42公里。很多人從來沒有跑過馬拉松，但有一個人一年內跑了385場馬拉松!

This British man ran in Africa. He ran from the most southern place to the
most northern place. He ran through 16 countries.
這位英國男子從非洲的最南端跑到最北部，一共經過16個國家。

He had some problems during the run. Somebody stole his money and phone. He
got very sick from eating some bad food. In the Sahara desert, he ran in
sandstorms and... snowstorms!
跑步的過程遇到許多困難，有人偷了他的錢包跟手機，他也曾經吃壞肚子。在撒哈拉沙漠，他還遇到沙塵暴跟暴風雪。

The man ran for two charities. One charity helps young people who have no
homes. The other helps Indigenous people in the Sahara desert. People around
the world gave them money because he ran. They gave over one million British
pounds. That's over $42 million Taiwan dollars!
全世界的人都因為他捐款給兩家慈善機構，一家幫助無家可歸的青少年，另一家幫助撒哈拉沙漠的原住民，募款金額超過100萬英鎊，相當於4200多萬台幣。

This man ran across Africa to help people. What a great guy!

Off to the Races! At the Siraya Go Soapbox Derby

Tainan is hosting a special race.

One part of the race is just for children.

And the children must build their own "cars"!

The Siraya Go CreCar soap box derby will take place November 6th.

A soap box derby is a fun race that gets a bit crazy sometimes.

Racers must drive a "car" that they made themselves.

These "cars" do not have an engine (引擎).

And most of the time, only one person can sit in the car.

The racers drive their homemade car down a downhill race track (賽道).

This year is the ninth year the Siraya Go CreCar race has been held.

The race for adults will take place on November 6th, at the Tsou Ma Lai Farm
in Danei District.

Racers start at the top of a ramp (坡道).

They will also face many challenges.

There are jumps on the track.

And there's even a parking challenge at the end.

There's also a race for kids age 6 to 12.

That race will be held in October.

Women Lead Dubai's First Camel Riding School

The United Arab Emirates, UAE for short, is a country in the Middle East.

阿拉伯聯合大公國是中東七個大公國組成的國家。

When you think of the Middle East, what do you see?

Tall cities, dry desert, and maybe camels (駱駝)?

Camel-riding is a big part the UAE.

People sometimes ride camels to get around, and it's a big part of UAE
culture.

But here's something that might surprise you...

The UAE just got its first school for camel-riding.

Last month, the "Arabian Desert Camel Riding Center" got its official license
(執照).

And here's another surprise...

One of the people who started the school is a woman.

The UAE has lots of traditions (傳統) for women and men.

For example, most of the time, only men ride camels.

A woman can work, but only if a male guardian (男性監護人), like her father
or husband, gives permission (同意).

This is why it's surprising that the camel-riding school was started by a
woman.

30-year-old Linda Krockenberger comes from Germany.

She moved to the UAE in 2015 for work.

Linda wanted to try riding camels.

But she couldn't find someone to teach her.

She says some said they would teach her, but only if they ride at night, in
the dark.

Some even asked her to dress like a boy.

Finally she found an Emirati man who would teach her.

52-year-old Obaid Al Falasi has worked with camels all his life.

And together Linda and Obaid decided to open a camel-riding school.

Linda是阿拉伯沙漠騎駱駝中心的共同創辦人。

And the school would teach anyone who wanted to learn.

Linda says the licensed school is the only way women can ride camels.

Otherwise (否則), women riding camels would not be acceptable (不可接受的) in
UAE culture.

Now, Linda says the school has around 30 students.

She says most of them are women.

And the women have even formed the UAE's first women's camel racing team!

Taipei Street Named 4th Coolest in the World

A street in Taiwan has been named one of the coolest streets in the world.

A company called Time Out asked 20,000 people around the world this
question...

"What is the coolest street in your city?"

Out」用問卷調查的方式，問了世界各地的居民「你所在城市最酷的街道是哪條？」

33 streets around the world are on the list.

And Taipei's Yongkang Street (永康街) was listed as number 4!

台灣南部將建原住民博物館
New Indigenous Museum in Southern Taiwan

There are many kinds of museums (博物館) you can visit in Taiwan.

Whether you're interested in science, art, or history, there's a place where
you can go and learn about them!

In a few years, there will be a new museum where people can discover more
about Taiwan's indigenous people (原住民).

The central government has agreed to build the National Indigenous Peoples'
Museum in Kaohsiung, near Chengcing Lake.

And it's expected to open in 2027.

It will be Taiwan's first national museum for indigenous peoples based on
their storytelling (故事).

The museum will preserve and try to popularize indigenous languages.
博物館將保存並努力推廣原住民語言。

And it will introduce the lives and cultures of indigenous people to visitors.

The exhibitions revolve around themes including arts and crafts, contemporary
lifestyles, traditions, and ecology.
展覽主題包括原住民的藝術和手工藝、現代生活方式、傳統和生態。

The museum will help showcase (展示) and promote (推動) Taiwan's many
indigenous cultures.

UK Builds "Buzz Stops" to Help Insect Population

When was the last time you saw a bee in the city?

I don't know about you, but I haven't seen an urban (都市) bee in the last
few years.

Many experts believe that the global insect population is dwindling (減少).

Insects, especially bees and butterflies, are important pollinators (傳粉者)
that help grow flowers, trees, and crops.

But humans have taken over (佔領了) more and more land for cities, roads, and
farms, leaving fewer green spaces for pollinators.

That's why bus stops in the UK and in Europe are getting living roofs
(活屋頂), in order to help important insects.

A living roof is a small garden on the roofs of bus stops in big cities, with
flowers and plants chosen to attract bees and butterflies.
活屋頂是大城市公車站屋頂上的一個小花園，上面種著可以吸引蜜蜂和蝴蝶的花草。

The company Clear Channel manages bus stops in the UK, and it's working with
the government to install (設置) at least 1,000 bee bus stops.

Clear Channel has already installed bee bus stops in many places in Europe.

Research shows these "buzz stops" have been helping increase bee populations
in the Netherlands.
研究表明這些"嗡車站"有幫助增加荷蘭的蜜蜂數量。

And the little gardens can also help lower city temperatures (降低城市溫度).

A wildlife expert says we're living through a nature and climate crisis, and
we need to use every tool we have to solve the problem.

Finland Aims to Change the Way We Make Clothes

Recycling is important to help reduce the amount of trash we produce, and
help the environment.

Take a moment to think about it: what are some things you use every day that
can be recycled?

Plastic containers… cardboard and paper… metal cans… glass bottles…

How about the clothes you're wearing?

Clothes can be made from different materials (材料), depending on the style
and function.

According to the Global Fashion Agenda organization, an estimated 92 million
tons of textile waste is created around the world each year.
全球每年約有 9200 萬噸紡織廢料產生。

Most of that textile waste is burned or sent to landfills, polluting the
environment.
大部分紡織廢料被焚燒或送往垃圾填埋場，污染環境。

But many start-up companies in Finland are trying to change that.

Like Infinited Fiber, a company that makes clothing fiber from old textiles.
像 Infinited Fiber，一家用舊紡織品製造服裝纖維的公司。

The recycled fiber (再生纖維) is called Infinna.

Infinna is made by shredding (切碎) old textiles and removing synthetic
(合成的) materials and dyes.

Then, they extract cellulose (提取纖維素) to create a soft, fluffy, and
cream-colored material that resembles wool (類似於羊毛).

The new fiber can then be used to make anything from shirts and dresses to
jeans.

The company says the technology has been available since the 1980s, but now
it's possible to mass-produce (批量生產) the recycled fiber.

And it's not the only company making recycled textiles in Finland.

Many other Finnish companies are looking at ways to produce new recycled
textiles, while cutting down on emissions (減少排放).

They say recycled fibers could become mainstream (主流) within ten to 15
years.

野放2年後 台灣黑熊Mulas身邊多了熊麻吉
Formosan Black Bear Mulas Happy in the Wild

A bear cub that was lost, is now living happily in the wild.

Mulas the Formosan black bear was found alone in the wild in 2019.

At that time, Mulas was just a few months old.

She was about to be attacked by dogs (被野狗攻擊).

The people who found her saved her.

They brought her to experts in Taitung.

The experts helped keep Mulas safe.

And they taught her how to be a bear.

People took care of Mulas for 10 months.

Then, when she was ready, they let her go back into the wild.

Now, 2 years and 4 months later...

Experts say Mulas has grown into a healthy, adult bear!

They say they've seen Mulas in videos.

The videos were filmed (拍攝) by cameras set up in the forest.

In the videos, Mulas looks strong.

Her fur is shiny (有光澤的).

She knows how to dig in the dirt and on trees, to look for food.

Mulas also knows how to scratch her back using trees.

And the videos also show that Mulas has a friend!

In the videos, Mulas plays with her friend.

They lightly bite each other, and hit each other with their paws.

Mulas和牠的朋友互相輕咬、拍打及玩耍，看起來很開心。

The experts are not sure if Mulas' friend is a male or a female.

But they are happy that Mulas is doing so well, and living happily in the
wild.

Cow Herd Adopts Wild Boar Piglet

A family of cows in Germany has a new baby.

But this baby looks a little different.

It's not a calf (小牛).

It's a wild boar piglet (小野豬).

A farmer named Friedrich says his cow herd was eating grass a few weeks ago.

And he noticed something a little strange.

He saw a piglet in the middle of all the cows.

Friedrich thinks the little wild boar piglet probably got lost.

The farmer says a group of wild boars crossed a river nearby.

That's probably when the piglet got separated (分散) from its family.

And now the little piglet is living with the cows.

The cows and the piglet seem very relaxed together.

They walk around, and eat grass.

Wild boars can be a bit of a headache for farmers.

They eat things that farmers grow.

Or the boars step on crops (農作物).

Wild boars also like to dig in the dirt.

They use their snout (口鼻部) and tusks (獠牙) to dig, and look for food.

But all this digging destroys farmers' crops.

And it leaves lots of holes.

Farm machines may break when they go over these holes.

But even with all these problems, Friedrich says he will let the wild boar
piglet stay.

He says it would be unfair to leave the piglet alone.

農人Friedrich說現在把小野豬趕走太不公平了。

Friedrich says he has asked hunters not to shoot the piglet.

And he says in the winter, he will let the piglet stay in the shed, with the
mother cows.

Tom Hanks to Release New Book

You might know him as the voice of Woody in the Toy Story movies.

Or, you might know him as Forest Gump.

He has been in a lot of famous movies.

But now, American actor Tom Hanks has written a book.

The book is about a superhero action movie.

The story starts from the year 1947, and goes all the way to present day
(當今的，現代的).

The 66-year-old actor says he thought about his experiences in Hollywood when
he was writing.

Tom has also created three comic books.

The comic books are an important part of the story.

And they are in the book.

This is actually Tom's second book.

His first book is full of short stories.

80 歲的寺廟藝術家保持傳統
80-year old Temple artist keeps tradition alive

In Taiwan, you may see temples (寺廟) everywhere you go.

There are more than 15,000 official temples in the country!

They're an important part of Taiwan's history and culture.

Most temples are decorated with intricate sculptures, beautiful carvings, and
murals of religious art.
大多數寺廟都裝飾著精致的雕塑、精美的雕刻和宗教藝術壁畫。

In Tainan, there is a temple artist who strives to preserve (努力保存)
traditional religious art.

80-year-old Pan Yueh-Hsing says he will keep painting for as long as he can
do it.

Last month, he won the Tainan Cultural Award for his effort to keep
traditional temple art alive.

That's just one of many awards he's won for his craft (工藝).

He learned how to paint temple beams and pillars (樑柱) from his father.

And his father learned it from his father.

That makes Pan the third-generation (第三代) temple artist in his family.

He says his favorite temple is the Tientan Temple (天壇天公廟), known as
Taiwan's first temple.

First Alphabetic Writing Found on Ancient Comb

Do you know the rest of that song?

It's called the 'ABC song' or 'alphabet song'.

An alphabet is a set of symbols used to represent the sounds of a language.
字母表是一組用於表示語言聲音的符號。

That's why when we start learning English, we start by learning that 'A'
sounds like "a" as in "apple" or "a" as in cake.

Scientists in Israel (以色列) have discovered the earliest writing ever found
that uses an alphabet.

The writing was carved (雕刻) on the side of a 3,700-year-old comb made of
ivory (象牙).

It was found in a city that was important to an ancient people known as the
Canaanites (古代迦南人).

And the writing was in the Canaanite alphabet.

They invented the world's first alphabet.

We still use some of the symbols (符號) in the English alphabet today.

Scientists say it wasn't easy to figure out (弄清楚) what the writing said
because the comb was so small.

It said, "may this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard."
它寫道："願這根獠牙根除頭髮和鬍鬚上的蝨子。"

Lice (蝨子) are a common problem for humans, even today.

Isn't it interesting?

Maybe we're not so different from people who lived thousands of years ago!

Eight Billionth Person in the World

A special baby was born this week.

He or she might be the eight-billionth person (第八十億人) in the world!

On November 15th, the world's population (人口) reached a new record.

The United Nations has predicted (預料) that the Earth now has eight billion
inhabitants (居民).

It's impossible to know exactly where this special baby was born.

But experts say they are most likely (最有可能) from the global south.

The UN says the global population is growing at its slowest rate (最慢的速度)
since 1950.

And the COVID-19 pandemic has also affected population growth.
COVID-19 也影響了人口增長。

They think the world's population could reach 8.5 billion in 2030.

More than half of the projected increase (預計增加) in the global population
will be concentrated (集中) in eight countries:

The Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan,
the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania.
剛果民主共和國、埃及、埃塞俄比亞、印度、尼日利亞、巴基斯坦、菲律賓和坦桑尼亞聯合共和國。

And India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous country.
