Let sleeping dogs lie: (informal) to leave a situation alone; not to interrupt or trouble a person, situation, etc. when this is likely to cause problems or disorder

Example: Remember, don’t mention that fight they had months ago—let sleeping dogs lie!

A St. Petersburg man couldn’t let sleeping dogs lie during a family argument Tuesday evening. Now, he’s facing a misdemeanor battery charge for picking up a metal dog cage with a one-year-old Chihuahua named Roscoe inside, and throwing it at his cousin during a fight, according to a St. Petersburg police report.

The sculpture of James Joyce beside his grave in Fluntern cemetery

A plan to repatriate the remains of James Joyce and his wife Nora Barnacle and finally observe their last wishes, has been proposed by Dublin city councilors more than 70 years after the author’s death. (…)

“There may be people who are not fans of this and want to let sleeping dogs lie. Joyce is a controversial figure, there are no doubts about that,” McCartan said.
