electric bike Taipei sidewalk

Electric bicycles are to be banned from sidewalks and cycle lanes in Taipei beginning October 1st.

According to the city’s Department of Transportation, the move is due to the their relatively high speeds compared with traditional bicycles.

Electric bicycle riders will have to use slow traffic lanes or stay on the right side of roads from next month.

However, they will still be allowed to used on riverside bikeways.

Officials say violators will be subject to fines of between 300 and 600 NT.

Taipei is the first municipality to adopt the ban due to an increase in traffic accidents caused by electric bikes.

According to the National Police Agency, the number of people riding electric bikes killed in traffic accidents stood at six in 2014 and the 1,455 people were injured in accidents involving electric bicycles last year.
