The 17-year-old female student who was rescued earlier this month after drifting for more than 20 hours in the sea off northern Taiwan coasts visited her rescuer in Penghu yesterday to show her gratitude.

Chang Hui-er was reported missing when the inflatable banana boat she and friends were on board capsized in the sea off Shanzhi, New Taipei City in the evening of June 8.

Chang was eventually spotted by Chen Chin-chi, the skipper of a passing fishing boat.

Chen rescued her and informed local authorities. Chang went missing for almost 21 hours after she was rescued.

Chen said that during his 38-year maritime career, this was his first experience of saving someone lost at sea.
