A Council of Agriculture proposal to levy pet tax is drawing criticism.

According to a report by the Chinese-language Apple Daily, an ongoing online poll from the council has turned up overwhelming opposition to the measure.

Opponents of the proposal said levying tax on pet owners would lead to a new wave of pet abandonment.

The sales tax on pets and pet insurance were proposed to help deal with a funding crisis facing the government’s stray-dog control program -which is expected to be exacerbated by a soon-to-be enacted ban on euthanasia.

The government said it will consider taxing pet businesses or placing a sales tax on pet food.
