A Kaohsiung-based company that raises maggots as a source of animal protein has been selected by the Ministry of Education as a distinguished start-up by university graduates and awarded a government subsidy.

Green Ark Biotech was established by National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences graduates late last year.

And its business is maggots.

According to company founder Huang Yenping, the decision to focus on producing maggots as a source of animal protein is due to increasing hikes in prices of fish meal due to the gradual decline of marine resources.

The company using the larvae of flies to replace fish meal as a source of animal protein for animal feed – and it cuts the cost by about 50-per cent.
