Taiwan placed third in Germany’s iENA International Trade Fair with a grand total of 19 gold, 26 silver and 31 bronze medals.

Boasting over 700 submissions from 30 countries and territories, iENA ranks as one of the world’s leading international trade shows.

44 Taiwanese competitors participated this year’s fair held in Nuremberg, Germany from October 30 to November 2.

Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology returned home with the most bling: four gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

Electrical engineering professor Chai Yen-hsin claimed two golds: one for a moisture-resistant hook for bathroom walls and another for a UV-powered camp light that can dispel bugs and animals, charge your phone, and serve as a global positioning device.

Tsai Yao-pin from the department of computer and communication engineering invented a Bluetooth “smart” baby bathtub. This smart tub displays different colors to indicate water temperature, plays soothing music and self-regulates water levels.

So will we see these designs in stores any time soon? The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has offered winners “full assistance” with business and commercialization moving forward.

Winning these honors at a prestigious trade fair is “a testament to the strength of the nation’s design sector and innovation capabilities,” said one MOEA official.
