A survey published by Hotels.com says the South Korean capital of Seoul has earned a place as the third favorite travel destination for Taiwanese for the first time.

The city, home to such landmarks as the Banpo Bridge (pictured above), came in at sixth last year and fifth in 2012.

This year, from January to July, Japan’s Tokyo and Osaka stayed at the first and second place respectively on the list, while Korean soap operas like My Love from the Stars and The Heirs have put Seoul on tourists’ radars.

In terms of other travel destinations in Asia, Thailand dropped from No. 5 to No. 8, showing that political instability and civil unrest in the country has affected Taiwan tourists’ interest in the country.

Kuala Lumpur slid out of the top 20 spots, possibly affected by two Malaysia Airlines tragedies and related protests this year.

The survey also shows that Taiwan travelers seem to be losing interest in North America, with former favorites Las Vegas falling from No. 10 to No. 15, and Los Angeles dropping from No. 14 to No. 19.
