For those that know me well, I’m a huge Studio Ghibli fan. I’ve seen just about every film the studio has put out except for a select few due to unavailability in the states. A week or so ago some of the ICRT gang and I saw the latest X-Men movie, and as we were exiting QSquare I noticed an ad for the latest Studio Ghibli film The Tale of Princess Kaguya. The art style completely captured my soul since it’s very reminiscent of Japanese paintings or watercolors.Kaguya Hime bkg

This film was directed and co-written by Isao Takahata, and it’s based on the classic Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The movie was originally going to be released alongside The Wind Rises, but due to unfinished storyboards it slowed down production for a simultaneous release.

Longtime collaborating composer Joe Hisaishi returns once again to compose the soundtrack for The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and I have to say that he is one of my favorite modern day composers. His music brings such life to Studio Ghibli’s films. I’ve always felt Hisaishi and Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli’s co-founder and a brilliant animator, director and illustrator in his own rights, are a match made in heaven. I’m looking forward to hearing the soundtrack as I see this film on the big screen.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya was released in Japan last November, and is slated to hit theaters in Taiwan on June 13th. There will also be a U.S. release this fall, so be sure to look out for it!
