Nuts About Planes
What's an allergy? It's when your body touches something and your body
doesn't like it.
Your body tries to fight it. People can have allergies to many things -
plants, animals, and more.
什麼是過敏? 當你的身體接觸到不喜歡的東西時,它會反抗,產生過敏反應。
Some allergies are not bad. They make you itch. They make you sneeze.
But they won't kill you! Some allergies can be very dangerous! People with
bad allergies need to be very careful!
有一些過敏反應會讓你皮膚癢、打噴嚏,但是嚴重的過敏反應有一些人要很小心,會很危險。
Many people have nut allergies. That's why many foods have a special stamp.
It says "May Contain Nuts". It's very easy for nuts to get into food. People
with nut allergies need to be very, very careful!
有一些食物都有標示含有堅果,對堅果過敏的人要特別小心。
A woman was on a plane. She had a very bad nut allergy.
The crew was selling snacks. Then she saw WHAT the snacks were … peanuts!!!
飛機上有一位女士對堅果嚴重過敏,她發現空服員販賣的點心都是花生。
The woman was scared. Her allergy was very bad. She didn't want people on the
plane to have peanuts.
So she bought all of them! She bought every peanut on the plane!
這個女士很害怕,她不要飛機上的乘客吃到花生,所以把它們全部買下來。
The woman spent 6,000 Taiwan dollars on peanuts! But she was safe. If you
have allergies, be careful!

These Scientists Saved the World
Katalin Kariko is a scientist. Some people say she saved the world. Maybe she
saved your life!
Katalin Kariko是一位科學家。有人說她拯救了世界,也許她還救了你一命。
Vaccines help stop people from getting sick. Dr. Kariko had an idea to make
better vaccines. She worked on her idea for many years.
疫苗可以防止人類生病。 Kariko博士想出辦法,讓疫苗更加有效。
Then Dr. Kariko worked with Dr. Drew Weissman. They worked in different ways.
He said, "from A to B you zigzag, zigzag, zigzag, zigzag! I [go]...
straight."
Kariko 博士跟Drew Weissman博士合作。他說Kariko會來來回回的思考,而他是直線前進。
Here, "zigzag" means she studied many kinds of new ideas and information. And
she had questions: What's this? How does this work? What's that? What does
that do? Can it help my idea? Can we try this?
Kariko研究很多新的想法跟資訊,也提出一大堆問題。
Maybe zigzagging helped! Dr. Kariko and Dr. Weissman found how to make better
vaccines using her ideas.
或許這種Z型的思考方式,讓他們找出更好的疫苗。
COVID-19 came. The world needed vaccines! Their work helped scientists make
two vaccines fast! It can make other vaccines too.
新冠肺炎的到來,讓全世界都需要疫苗,而這兩人的研究加快了疫苗的生產。
Every year, some people get a Nobel Prize. They did great things for the
world. This year, Dr. Kariko and Dr. Weissman got the Nobel Prize for
Medicine! They made her idea work and saved the world!

Groups Move "In Time" to Music
Narrator: How do soldiers march? They march together.
Sergeant Major: "Left! Right! Left! Right! Left! Right! …" (cont.)
Narrator: They're moving "in time". Together, they step with their left foot.
Together, they step with their right foot. Then their left, then their right,
then … ah! You get the idea!
他們同時做一樣的動作,一起同時踏出左腳,然後右腳。
When people walk with friends, sometimes they walk in time. "Left! Right!
Left! Right!" No one tells them to move in time! They don't think about it!
It's natural.
當人們跟朋友走在一起,有時候會很自然地踏出相同步伐。
When you dance, you move in time to the music. That's natural too. You don't
think about it … you dance, baby!

Scientists in Switzerland had some questions. How does music make people in
big groups move? Does music make these people move together, in time?

to look for smaller natural movements. So they used classical music.

Helping Kids Make Friends
Sammie helps lonely kids. They feel sad… They need a friend. Sammie helps
them find friends!
Sammie幫助孤單的孩子交朋友。
How does Sammie help? She gives buddy benches to schools. What are they?
Well, buddy means friend. And benches are long seats for two or three people.
Buddy benches are seats for friends!
Sammie 怎麼幫助他們呢? 她捐好朋友長板凳給學校。Buddy的意思是朋友,Bench
是兩到三個人可以坐的板凳。好朋友板凳就是用來交朋友的。
How do buddy benches work? When a kid feels lonely, she sits on one. Other
kids know she needs a friend. They can sit with her or play with her. They
can be friends!
小朋友感到孤單的時候,可以坐在好朋友長板凳上,其他的小朋友就會知道她需要朋友,會跟她坐在一起、跟她玩,成為朋友。
Sammie learned about buddy benches when she was eight years old. She wanted a
bench for her school. She wanted one that was kind to the Earth.
Sammie八歲的時候知道好朋友長板凳,她希望她的學校也有,她也希望能夠對地球友善。
A company takes plastic bottle caps to make plastic benches. So Sammie asked
everyone for bottle caps. She got 725 kilograms of caps! That made three
buddy benches!

Sammie is 14 now. She didn't stop at three benches. She gave more than 200
