Tour de Taiwan
You can probably ride a bicycle (腳踏車)...
But maybe you don't have a safe place to ride (沒有安全的地方可以騎), because
of all those cars.
Well, there are 192 people who aren't scared!
These 192 people are in a bike race (自由車賽) from Taipei to Kaohsiung.
It's called the "Tour de Taiwan" (環台賽)!
The racers (參賽者) are divided into 23 teams (分成二十三個隊), from 31
For the first part of the race (比賽的第一部分), they rode around Taipei for
more than 80 kilometers (騎了八十多公里).
Every day after that, they rode around 100 more kilometers...
And the road was super steep
And on the last day, they finished at the Kaohsiung National Stadium
Of course, they were riding REALLY fast, and they needed to be very careful
So they had cars driving in front and in back, to give them space to ride
safely.
So... who won?
Well, as we're recording now, we don't know yet.
But when you hear this, you can go check!

2023 Academy Awards
Every year, Hollywood's "Academy" holds an awards ceremony for the best
movies of the year.
It's called the "Academy Awards", and the award is a little golden statue
And this year, one movie won a lot of prizes
It was a movie called "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (媽的多重宇宙),
starring Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊).
And because of her performance, Michelle Yeoh is the first Asian person to
win the Oscar for "Best Actress"!
The movie's two directors (兩位導演) won the award for "Best Director"
And two other people in the movie were named "Best Supporting Actors"
But there were so many other amazing moments
"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (黑豹 2:瓦干達萬歲) won "Best Costume
The Indian action movie (印度動作片) named "RRR" got "Best Original Song"
(最佳原創歌曲), for its song "Naatu Naatu"...
And "Best Documentary" went to a movie about Alexei Navalny, a man fighting
for change in Russia
Many people say this year's Academy Awards felt very different than before,
and many people are happy about the change.
But one nice thing stayed the same...
Almost everyone who got an Oscar made sure to thank their mom and dad!

Chicken Poo Power
Okay, our last story is pretty silly...
But it's really good news!
One man in Kenya (肯亞) has found a new way to get power (供應能源) for his
farm.
He uses chicken poop
Every morning, he collects the poopoo and puts it into a special machine
This makes something called biogas (沼氣).
Of course, the biogas has to go through a filter, to remove all the bad stuff
and bad smells.
But after that, it can be used for power
He uses it for hot water, for cooking, and even to charge his electric car
He says it helps him to save money (省錢), and it doesn't hurt the
So, this poopoo is pretty useful (滿好用)!
Are you brave enough to use it?

BLACKPINK Boosts Kaohsiung's Economy
You probably already know that BLACKPINK came to Taiwan recently.
The popular South Korean girl group had two concerts in Kaohsiung City.
It was one of the many stops in their ongoing Born Pink World Tour.
The concerts drew (吸引了) over 90,000 people to Kaohsiung.
As a treat (作為款待), the city government gave NT$50 vouchers to
They could use their concert ticket stubs (演唱會票) and use them to shop in
stores and restaurants.
Many people visited the Liuhe Night Market and other shopping areas.
And night market vendors sold twice as much!
The city government is expecting (預計) there will be more visitors next
month, thanks to other concerts and events.
That is great news for local businesses
The Kaohsiung Mayor thanked BLACKPINK and their fans (粉絲) in a Facebook
post.
He also thanked the workers who helped direct crowds at public transportation
facilities after the concerts.
It looks like Kaohsiung is going to keep busy (忙個不停) with all these

Plastic Pollution Goes Geologic
Some scientists have made a worrying discovery (令人擔憂的發現) on an island
(島) in South America called Trindade Island.
They found rocks made from plastic debris.
Trindade Island is an uninhabited volcanic island (無人居住的火山島) on the
east coast of Brazil.
It's a protected area (保護區) for green turtles.
A geologist (地質學家) studying the island explained that the plastic on the
beaches comes from fishing nets (漁網).
The nets are dragged by marine currents (被海流帶到這裡) and accumulate on
the beach (堆積在沙灘上).
When the temperature rises, the plastic melts (熔化) and becomes embedded
(嵌進去) with the beach's natural material.
Environmental pollution will forever be preserved in the Earth's geological
records.
This is a reminder (提醒) for us to always dispose of our trash properly
And to do our part (儘我們的一份力量) in keeping our planet clean.

He won gold in the men's 500 meters event at the World Single Distance
Championships in the Netherlands this month.
Not only that, he also won two other gold medals, beating Olympic champions
(擊敗了奧運冠軍) in each of those events!
Speed skating is a sport where athletes (運動員) race around an icy track
(結冰的跑道) at speeds as fast as 56 kilometers-per-hour (時速 56 公里).
18-year-old Stolz is from the US State of Wisconsin
He's been winning national championships since fifth grade, and in high
school, he went to school online so that he could train for up to six hours a
day.
His coach (教練) says one of Stolz's greatest talents is the way he takes
corners on the curving track at high speeds.
Stolz
Stolz's speed and strength have amazed many people (讓很多人驚嘆不已).
Stolz's wins mean that he's the first person to win both the junior

New Record for Yushan's Latest First Snowfall
Every year, we all get excited about snow on Taiwan's mountains.
It's fun to see photos and videos of everything covered in white.
Many people like to go up the mountains to enjoy the snow.
They build snowmen, and write words in the snow.
But something was a little different this season.
Yushan (玉山) got its first snow of the season last week.
The snow fell from 7:05am until 7:15am.
Experts say strong wind and wet air moved in from the west.
And this led to low temperatures of around minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
And the cold wet air was perfect for snow!
But this was the first time it snowed on Yushan this season...
That means there was no snowfall on Yushan from December to February, all
through winter!
This is the latest first-snow on the mountain in 80 years.
The average temperature on Yushan this winter was 3.03 degrees.
That's the third highest in history.

A Monet Made of Lego
French painter Claude Monet had many famous paintings.
Some of the most famous Monet paintings are his water lilies.
Around 100 years ago, the artist painted the lilies in the pond at his home
near Paris.
Monet made around 250 water lily paintings.
And now an artist has recreated (重現) these paintings.
But he didn't use paint.
This artist used Legos!
This Lego artwork is made by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
The artwork is 15 meters long.
Ai Weiwei used 650,000 Lego blocks!
And he used 22 different colors.
The art is full of bright blue, green, and orange.
But there is something a little different about Ai Weiwei's water lily
artwork.
On one side of the colorful artwork, there is a patch (一塊、一區) of dark
Legos.
The dark Legos represent a door.
It's the door of an underground cave that he and his father lived in back in
China.
They had to live in the cave because his father did not agree with the
government at the time.
They had to live in exile
Ai Weiwei's childhood, and other experiences are a big part of his art.
He often uses his artwork to make people think about politics (政治), and
human rights.
Ai Weiwei's Lego artwork will be shown at London's Design Museum next month.

Landline Use Falls in Taiwan
When was the last time you used a landline (市話)?
A landline is a traditional telephone.
It's connected to wires (電線).
Government data shows that landline use is going down in Taiwan.
That means people are using traditional phones less often.
The data shows that on average, people use landlines for less than seven
minutes a day.
And the number of people who have a landline is also falling.
The data shows that more people are now using smartphones.
Or, they use messaging apps to talk to each other.
The government says many people are choosing to cancel their landline service.
And these people often say that they are making calls with their cellphone
instead.
But officials say some people still prefer (比較喜歡) landlines.

An Ant-man Smaller than Ant-man
Art comes in all shapes and sizes.
Sometimes it is big, like the ceiling (屋頂) of the Sistine Chapel.
Or sometimes, art can be tiny.
A museum in the UK is showing some tiny art.
It will show 20 sculptures (雕像).
They are made by a famous artist named Willard Wigan.
These sculptures are very small.
They are so small, that they fit into the eye of a needle.
Some of these sculptures show famous people, like William Shakespeare and
Albert Einstein.
Some show story characters (角色), like Pinocchio and Robin Hood.
There's also a sculpture of Ant-man.
A sculpture of one person that fits in the eye of a needle is already amazing.
But how about 13 people?
The museum will also show Willard's sculpture of "The Last Supper"
The sculpture shows Jesus and his 12 disciples (門徒) sitting together at a
table...
And they all fit in the eye of a needle!
To make his tiny art, Willard uses needles, and pieces of broken diamonds
And he uses an eyelash (睫毛) as a paintbrush.
He uses a microscope (顯微鏡) to do his work.
And Willard says he works on his sculptures "between heartbeats".
That's because every heartbeat makes his fingers move.
And that could cause him to make a mistake!
Willard once made a motorcycle sculpture that fit into a hollowed-out hair
(挖空的毛髮) from his neck.
But that's not his smallest sculpture.
His record (紀錄) is a sculpture of a baby that he made from a fiber (纖維)
from his carpet.
And he put that sculpture inside a hollowed-out piece of his hair.
That sculpture holds the Guinness world record for "smallest handmade
sculpture".

Natural History Museums Have 1.1 Billion Things
Museums hold many amazing things.
And there are museums all over the world.
Have you ever wondered how many things are held in museums?
It turns out more than a billion things!
73 natural history museums (自然歷史博物館) in 28 different countries counted
the things they show or hold.
That's not exactly all the museums in the world...
But it's quite a lot.
And, they learned that together, the museums hold 1.1 billion things!
There are big things, like T-rex skeletons.
And there are small things, like mosquitoes, or even grains of pollen (花粉).
Knowing this helps museums plan (計畫).
It helps them know what things they can share, and what they should collect

New Taipei to Ban Single Use Plastic Cups
There are lots of drink shops in New Taipei.
There are 2,704 drink shops in the northern city.
And a big change is coming for them.
Soon, these drink shops will not be allowed to use disposable plastic cups
The New Taipei City government says the change starts May 1st.
The city says this will cut the use of plastic cups by 368 million each year.
Officials told drink stores about this change last year.
They asked the stores to start buying paper cups instead.
The city government says shops that do not follow these rules could be fined
They could be fined up to $6,000 NT.
And if the shops still do not follow these rules, they could be fined many
times.
Taipei City made this change starting December of last year.

Netherlands Sniffer Cat on the Job
Many airports around the world use sniffer dogs (緝毒犬).
These dogs usually work with a handler (訓練員).
The handler will ask the dog to smell things.
And the dog uses its nose, to check for dangerous things, like drugs (毒品).
Dogs are great for this job.
They have a very keen (敏銳的) sense of smell.
And they like working with people.
But in the Netherlands, a new animal is on the job.
The Netherlands Customs (海關) says it now has sniffer CATS.
Officials say the customs cats have gone through special training.
These cats can also use their noses to look for dangerous things, or
dangerous people.
Why cats?
Officials say cats also have a very good sense of smell.
And they are more agile (敏捷) than dogs.
These cats can get into smaller spaces that some dogs can't get into.
The cats are also very quiet.
They can check suitcases without people noticing.
Officials say the first sniffer cats will start work soon.
They say they've already had some sniffer cats practice working at airports.
And they say so far, the cats have done very well.
The cats have already helped catch dangerous people.
And they've helped find dangerous things that people have tried to hide in
their suitcase.
Netherlands officials say the cats help make sure airports and travelers stay
safe.
