Hi there, it's time for another episode of News Bites!
I'm Nancy Sun…
And I'm Hope Ngo.
In today's news:
What's a landline, how small can a sculpture get, and how many things do
museums have?
All that and more, coming up next.

Landline Use Falls in Taiwan
When was the last time you used a landline (市話)?
A landline is a traditional telephone.
It's connected to wires (電線).
Government data shows that landline use is going down in Taiwan.
That means people are using traditional phones less often.
The data shows that on average, people use landlines for less than seven
minutes a day.
And the number of people who have a landline is also falling.
The data shows that more people are now using smartphones.
Or, they use messaging apps to talk to each other.
The government says many people are choosing to cancel their landline service.
And these people often say that they are making calls with their cellphone
instead.
But officials say some people still prefer (比較喜歡) landlines.

An Ant-man Smaller than Ant-man
Art comes in all shapes and sizes.
Sometimes it is big, like the ceiling (屋頂) of the Sistine Chapel.
Or sometimes, art can be tiny.
A museum in the UK is showing some tiny art.
It will show 20 sculptures (雕像).
They are made by a famous artist named Willard Wigan.
These sculptures are very small.
They are so small, that they fit into the eye of a needle.
Some of these sculptures show famous people, like William Shakespeare and
Albert Einstein.
Some show story characters (角色), like Pinocchio and Robin Hood.
There's also a sculpture of Ant-man.
A sculpture of one person that fits in the eye of a needle is already amazing.
But how about 13 people?
The museum will also show Willard's sculpture of "The Last Supper"
The sculpture shows Jesus and his 12 disciples (門徒) sitting together at a
table...
And they all fit in the eye of a needle!
To make his tiny art, Willard uses needles, and pieces of broken diamonds
And he uses an eyelash (睫毛) as a paintbrush.
He uses a microscope (顯微鏡) to do his work.
And Willard says he works on his sculptures "between heartbeats".
That's because every heartbeat makes his fingers move.
And that could cause him to make a mistake!
Willard once made a motorcycle sculpture that fit into a hollowed-out hair
(挖空的毛髮) from his neck.
But that's not his smallest sculpture.
His record (紀錄) is a sculpture of a baby that he made from a fiber (纖維)
from his carpet.
And he put that sculpture inside a hollowed-out piece of his hair.
That sculpture holds the Guinness world record for "smallest handmade
sculpture".

Natural History Museums Have 1.1 Billion Things
Museums hold many amazing things.
And there are museums all over the world.
Have you ever wondered how many things are held in museums?
It turns out more than a billion things!
73 natural history museums (自然歷史博物館) in 28 different countries counted
the things they show or hold.
That's not exactly all the museums in the world...
But it's quite a lot.
And, they learned that together, the museums hold 1.1 billion things!
There are big things, like T-rex skeletons.
And there are small things, like mosquitoes, or even grains of pollen (花粉).
Knowing this helps museums plan (計畫).
It helps them know what things they can share, and what they should collect

I'm Trevor Tortomasi...

Today's stories...
A helicopter saves a hiker in Taitung, a new space mission leaves for
Jupiter, and Australians vote to change their constitution.
Let's hear all about it!

Helicopter Saves Hiker in Taitung County
Hiking (健行) is fun.
People hike into the mountains to get fresh air and exercise.
But hiking can be dangerous, too.
Hikers (健行的人) need to prepare (做準備) before they go into the mountains.
Even if they prepare, there might still be an accident (意外).
The hiker might fall down and get hurt.
And if they are alone, there will be trouble (大麻煩).
So, what happens if a hiker is alone (獨自一個人) when they get hurt?
If they are lucky, a helicopter (直升機) will come save them.
That's what happened recently in Taitung County (台東縣).
A hiker was deep in the mountains when he hurt his knee.
He was hurt so badly, he couldn't even walk.
Fortunately, his phone had service.
He called the fire department, and they sent a search-and-rescue team
The team searched (搜尋) for two days to find the hurt hiker.
When they found him, they called a helicopter to come pick him up.
The area was foggy (有霧), so it was not easy for the helicopter to land.
Finally, the helicopter found a place to come down (降落的地方).
It picked the hiker up and took him to the hospital in Taitung City.
Thanks to the search-and-rescue team, and the helicopter crew, the hiker will
live to hike another day.

A Mission to Find Alien Life on Jupiter's Moons
Our solar system (太陽系) has one sun and eight planets (行星).
What's the biggest planet?
Is it Earth?
Nope! The biggest planet is Jupiter (木星).
And just like Earth has a moon, Jupiter also has moons.
In fact, Jupiter has almost one hundred moons.
Jupiter is such a big planet, and it has so many moons, that we have to
ask... does anything live there?
We don't know!
But recently, we have sent a new mission (新的任務) to search for life (生物)
on Jupiter's moons.
The mission is called the "Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer", or "JUICE" for short.
The JUICE mission will visit three of Jupiter's biggest moons.
We already know there is water on these moons.
Scientists think these moons might have oceans of water (水的海洋), like we
have on Earth.
And where there is water, there may be life.
That's why the JUICE mission is going to Jupiter's moons to search for life.
Even though it has already left, the JUICE mission still won't arrive at
Jupiter for eight more years.
So, the year 2031 might be the year we find life in space.

Australians to Vote on 'Indigenous Voice'
Australia (澳大利亞) is a big country with a lot of people.
Australians (澳洲人) are proud of their country and their history.
Most Australians belong to (屬於) families that came to Australia from Europe
more than one hundred years ago.
But, there is another group of Australians, too.
Indigenous people (澳洲原住民) have been living in Australia for tens of
thousands of years (好幾萬年).
They have lived in Australia far longer than anybody else.
Indigenous Australians have their own language (自己的語言) and culture
They also have special songs, dances, and music.
These are some of the oldest traditions (傳統) in the world!
That's why it is strange that Australia's highest law does not say anything
about Indigenous people.
It's true! Australia's Constitution (憲法), the most important law in
Australia, does not talk about them at all.
That's not good!
It means Australia's laws don't really work for Indigenous people.
But now, many people in Australia want to change this.
They want to change the Constitution (修改憲法), to give Indigenous people a
voice (聲音).
What does that mean?
This new law will make a group (機構) called "The Indigenous Voice"
That group will be able to work together with Australia's government, to make
new laws for the country.
This group will give Indigenous people a way to decide how laws will work in
Australia.
Many people like this idea, but first they need to vote on it (投票).
At the end of this year, Australians will vote on the Indigenous Voice.
If the vote is successful (成功), Australia's Indigenous people will finally
get a say in government.

Historical Artifacts Found in Tainan Park
Do you know the oldest city in Taiwan?
Lots of people say Tainan City is the oldest city in the country.
Some buildings there are hundreds of years old.
How long have people lived in Tainan, after all?
The answer may surprise you.
Recently, Tainan city workers found some artifacts (文物) that are thousands
of years old.
The workers were renovating (翻新) Yongkang Park.
As they were digging in the ground, they started to find some special objects
They thought the objects might be historical artifacts.
Artifacts are things used by people long ago, that have survived until today.
According to law (按照法律), when workers find artifacts in the ground, they
need to stop their work so historical experts can check it out.
The experts came to take a look, and discovered there were a few different
kinds of artifacts.
They found some orange-colored pottery
The pottery had special patterns made by rope.
The experts also found some farming tools, such as hoes and axes
They even found mounds of shells (貝丘), made by ancient people.
These shells are useful to the experts, who can study them to learn what kind
of food people ate long ago.
They think these artifacts came from the Niuchouzi Culture
The Niuchouzi Culture are the people who lived in the area of Tainan
thousands of years ago.
The historical experts say these artifacts are between 3,000 and 4,500 years
old.
Now, the city of Tainan has changed its plans for Yongkang Park.
In one part of the park, they will continue renovations.
But in the place where they found the artifacts, they will keep on searching
(繼續尋找), to see what else they can find.

Michigan Boy Saves School Bus
When you are on the bus, how do you pass the time?
Most of us look at our phones.
But some people pay more attention to their surroundings
That's how one student in the US was recently able to save his school bus
from crashing (免於撞車).
Who is this student?
Dillon Reeves is a seventh grade student (國一的學生) in Michigan.
Dillon takes the bus to and from school every day.
His parents refuse (拒絕) to buy him a phone, so during the bus ride, Dillon
just relaxes (放鬆).
One afternoon, he noticed something strange with the bus driver.
While the other students were playing on their phones, Dillon noticed that
the bus driver had passed out (公車司機昏倒了).
The driver was having a medical emergency, and could not control the bus.
Dillon jumped out of his seat to take control of the bus.
Dillon
He turned the steering wheel (方向盤) to keep the bus on the road, and then
he stepped on the brakes (剎車) to stop it.
As the bus stopped, Dillon yelled to the other students to call for help.
The whole story was captured by the bus's video camera.
When people saw the video of Dillon saving the bus, they said he was a hero
Dillon says he just knew what to do at that moment.
But his parents still won't buy him a phone.
What does Dillon think about that?
He says "Whatever. My parents are old school."

Indian State to Open New Lion Sanctuary
Where do lions live in the wild?
Wild lions live in Africa, right?
Some of them do, but there is another kind of lion, too.
"Asiatic Lions" (亞洲獅) live in Asia.
They are an endangered species
Today, wild Asiatic Lions are only found in one place.
That is Gir National Park, in the Gujarat state of India
Gir National Park is a lion sanctuary
That means it exists to protect the lions.
The park has been so successful, it now has too many lions.
There is a population (人口) of over 400 lions in the park.
So, the state of Gujarat has decided to create another lion sanctuary.
They will open the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in another part of Gujarat, and
move 40 of the lions to that sanctuary.
Some experts (專家) say this is not enough.
They say some of the lions should be moved to a different part of India.
If the lions live across a larger area, it will be easier for their
population to survive diseases.
Now that the population of Asiatic lions is increasing, people must decide
how to manage them.

Taiwan Prehistory Museum Reopens
You can learn a lot about history in a museum.
But what's in a museum about "prehistory"?
Prehistory is the time before humans started to write things down.
Humans used simple tools (工具).
But they did not have the complex (複雜的) writing systems that we have now.
So how do we know what was Taiwan like during that time?
The National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung has reopened.
It shows visitors Taiwan's prehistory, natural history, and the culture of
Taiwan's indigenous peoples.
The museum was closed for almost three years for renovation (整修).
And it reopened just in time for International Museum Day.
The museum's director says the museum shows Taiwan's history from the
Paleolithic Period (舊石器時代) to the 21st century.
The director says there are stone tools that are around 30,000 years old.
And there are new things, like a Golden Melody Award trophy lent (借) by Amis
singer Suming Lupi.
The director says she hopes visitors can see the amazing contributions of
Taiwan's Indigenous peoples.
And the museum also shows Taiwan's links to the world.
The director says archeologists have found things that show Austronesian
settlers coming to Taiwan as early as 30,000 years ago.

Nigerian Chef Breaks World Record for Nonstop Cooking
How would you show the world you are strong and hardworking?
How about by breaking a world record?
A Nigerian chef has set a new global record for nonstop cooking.
She has cooked for more than 100 hours!
The last record for nonstop cooking was 87 hours and 45 minutes.
That record was set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
Hilda Baci started cooking on Thursday, May 11th in Lagos, Nigeria.
And she passed 100 hours on May 15th.
She took a five-minute break every hour.
Or she took a one-hour break every 12 hours.
During that one hour of rest, she would take a shower, get checked by a
doctor, and rest.
Thousands of people have gathered to watch Hilda cook.
She has made dozens of Nigerian dishes, including rice and stew.
Many people are also watching online.
Why is she doing this?
Hilda says she wants to show how hardworking and determined (有決心) young
Nigerians are.
She also wants to help show how strong young African women are.
Hilda says they often have to go "an extra mile to be taken seriously".
And she is helping the world learn more about Nigerian cuisine.

Coconut Crabs Living Wild on Green Island
A type of rare crab may have found a home on Green Island.
Coconut crabs live on land.
Adult coconut crabs have hard shells (殼), and can get very large.
An adult coconut crab can weigh around 4 kilograms.
That's about as heavy as a cat, or a small dog.
And they can grow up to 1 meter wide, from the tip of one leg (的尖端) to the
tip of another.
Some of these big crabs have been found on Green Island.
And scientists think the crabs may be making Green Island their new home.
The scientists have spotted young coconut crabs living free on the island.
These young crabs were found by scientists earlier this summer.
And the crabs were 1 to 5 years old.
They were still carrying seashells to protect (保護) their bodies.
Coconut crabs are protected by Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act.
They are mostly found along the coast of Pingtung, Taitung, and Taiwan's
eastern outlying islands.
Their pincers (螯) are also strong enough to crack coconut shells.
They do this to get to the coconut meat (椰肉) inside.
Scientists say young coconut crabs have been spotted on Green Island in the
past.
But they say the crabs haven't been carefully studied there yet.
If the crabs can live and grow on Green Island, they could become an
important part of the natural environment there.

Australian Town Heads Underground to Beat the Heat
We all felt the heat this summer.
And many scientists say these super-hot summers could be the new "normal".
So if we're going to get through these high temperatures, we may have to
change the way we live.
Some in Australia are heading underground (地下) to get away from the heat.
Around 3,000 people live in a town called Coober Pedy.
But sometimes, it looks very empty.
That's because Coober Pedy gets very hot.
The temperature there hits 52 degrees Celsius...and that's in the shade
It's so hot, people who live there have to put electronics (電子產品) in the
fridge.
So, more than half of the people in Coober Pedy live underground.
All the underground buildings in the town are at least four meters deep.
And down there, the temperature is always around 23 degrees Celsius.
That's during daytime and at night.
People who live there say it's very easy to make a home or a new building.
They say the rock there is very soft.
So if the want to add another room to their underground house, they just
start digging (挖).
And some people have made big homes with many rooms.
Some have even added game rooms, and underground swimming pools.
And it's not just homes that are underground, Coober Pedy also has
underground restaurants, shops, and churches.
Some people have even made money while making their buildings bigger.
A Coober Pedy hotel was digging to build more rooms, when the owners found
opals (蛋白石) underground.
The opals were worth almost $1 million US dollars!
So is going underground the best way to deal with global warming?
Not all places have stone and soil that is good for making underground
buildings.
And in some places, underground homes would be too damp (潮濕).
This means living underground may not be a perfect solution
But as the world gets hotter, we may see more underground towns popping up
soon!

Pinocchio is a story character whose nose grows longer when he lies. But did

Scientists took pictures that showed how hot someone's face is.
They found that when we lie, the temperature around our nose, and the inner
