Ozone Layer Getting Better

Hi, students! I want to ask you a question. Do you know about pollution?
Pollution means things like air or water are dirty. We get air pollution from
many things, like cars.
Pollution 就是汙染。很多東西都會汙染空氣，像是汽車。

Pollution is bad. It causes a lot of problems. One problem is big: air
pollution hurts the ozone layer. The ozone layer is above the earth and the
clouds. You can't see it, but it helps us a lot.
空氣汙染會破壞臭氧層。臭氧層是在比雲還要高的地方，我們看不到它，但是它幫了我們很大的忙。

The ozone layer keeps us safe from the sun. We would be in big trouble
without the ozone layer! We would have more problems with our skin. We would
have more problems with our eyes too.
臭氧層幫我們抵擋太陽，沒有它，我們的皮膚跟眼睛都會受到傷害。

Air pollution made a hole in the ozone layer. That is very bad. But there is
some good news. The ozone layer is getting better!
空氣汙染讓臭氧層破了一個洞，不過好消息是，它的情況正在好轉！

Think of it like this. You fall down. You get a cut on your skin. Then your
skin gets better. It heals. The cut goes away.
有的時候你跌倒，皮膚會擦傷。然後它會慢慢地復原，傷口也就不見了。

Like your skin, the ozone layer is healing. The hole in the ozone layer is
getting smaller.
臭氧層的狀況就像人類的皮膚，它的洞也在慢慢地變小。

That is great news! It's healing because the air is cleaner. Maybe one day,
the hole in the ozone layer will go away.
會這樣是因為空氣變得更乾淨，也許有一天，臭氧層的破洞會完全消失。

Taiwan Man Runs Arctic Race

A marathon is a long running race. It is 42 kilometers long! 一場馬拉松要跑
42 公里。

What about an ultramarathon? An ultramarathon is hundreds of kilometers long.
超級馬拉松怎麼樣呢？ 要跑好幾百公里！

What about an ultramarathon in the cold, icy Arctic?
如果是辦在冰天雪地的北極超級馬拉松呢？

The Yukon Arctic Ultra is in the cold, icy Arctic. It's an ultramarathon in
Canada. It's 700 kilometers long. Tommy Chen ran this ultramarathon. Tommy is
from Taiwan! 加拿大的育空極地超馬賽有 700
公里，來自台灣的陳彥博是參賽選手之一！

At the start of the race, Tommy had lots of energy. He was confident. This
was his second Yukon Arctic Ultra. He knew the way.
比賽一開始，陳彥博精力充沛。這是他第二次參加這場比賽，對路很熟，他很有信心。

Tommy wore a heavy jacket and warm pants. He did not feel very cold. At
night, he slept in a tent. 他穿著厚重衣褲保暖，晚上就睡在帳篷裡。

For ten days, Tommy ran... and ran... and ran some more... He got tired. The
winter sky was dark. He was lonely. Near the end of the race, he almost got
lost.
他一跑就是十天，跑得好累。冬天黑暗的天空也讓他覺得寂寞。快結束的時候，還差一點迷路。

Then Tommy was on the trail again. And…he finished the race! He was in
fourth place! He did a celebration dance!

Cook Makes Cricket Ice Cream

I'm at an ice cream shop. I want one small scoop of ice cream. There are many
flavors! There's chocolate… strawberry… vanilla…

WAIT! What is that?! Crickets?! In ice cream?!
我在冰淇淋店裡面，有好多種口味可以選，有巧克力、草莓，還有... 蟋蟀？

That's right! That's a strange flavor.

Thomas is a cook. He makes strange ice cream flavors. He made liver sausage
and cheese ice cream! One time, Thomas put gold on ice cream! It was 130 NT
dollars for one scoop!

Kids to Record Roads for Earth Day

Tomorrow is Earth Day! I'm at the National Museum of Natural Science in
Taichung. The museum has lots of stones, plants, animals, and insects.

No More Plastic Cups at New Taipei City Drink Shops

Ah, that tastes good! Hey! Do you like soda? How about some cold milk tea?
Drinks are great on a hot day! 你們喜歡喝甚麼飲料呢？汽水嗎？還是冰奶茶？

But there is a problem. Many drink shops use plastic cups. People use these
plastic cups just once. Then they throw the cups away. Plastic is very bad
for the earth. Lots of plastic gets into the ocean. It hurts the animals
there.
很多飲料店都用塑膠杯，用一次之後就會丟掉。塑膠對環境有害，流進海裡也會傷害到海洋動物。

That's why New Taipei City has a new rule. It started on May 1st. Drink shops
can't sell drinks in plastic cups!

This is a big change! There are 2,700 drink shops in New Taipei City. Now 368
million plastic cups won't be used there every year!

所以，新北市政府規定從五月一日開始，飲料店禁止用塑膠杯。新北市有 2700
間飲料店，這樣每一年會少用三億六千多萬個塑膠杯！
New Taipei City is the second city in Taiwan to have this rule. Which city
was the first? Taipei. Yes, Taipei was the first to ban selling drinks in
plastic cups.

cups. Paper is better for the earth.
