The Culture Ministry has announced a cash prize of 5 million NT for film director Ho Xiao-xian, who has won the best director award of the Cannes Film Festival.

The ministry says based on regulations of incentives for movie makers to join international film festivals, Ho himself will receive 5 million while his work “The Assassin” will get half a million NT.

The film, described as “a slow-burning minimalist drama” about a female assassin, had received 45 million NT in subsidies  from the Culture Ministry over its 8-year-long production.

Half of that money came from the box office revenue of the blockbuster Seediq Bale, and Culture officials say the ministry is looking forward to helping more movies in the future.
