The Ministry of Culture’s Taiwan Academy in Houston will kick off a series of events in the United States today, to honor Taiwan writer Chu Tien-wen, the winner of the fourth Newman Prize for Chinese Literature.

The literature and film events are being organized to coincide with a ceremony tomorrow at the University of Oklahoma, where Chu will receive the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature.

Chu, a prominent Taiwan novelist and screenwriter, won the prize last year with her 1990 “Fin-de-Siecle Splendor”, a collection of short stories set in Taipei.

She is the second Taiwanese writer to win the American award that recognizes outstanding achievements in Chinese prose or poetry.

Chu is also known for her long-time collaboration with Hou Hsiao-hsien; their film “A City of Sadness” won a Golden Lion at the 1989 Venice Film Festival.
