The Environmental Protection Administration says it hopes to introduce a scheme that will see users of the Taipei and Kaohsiung metro systems gaining “green points” as rewards.

Under the pilot scheme, which could be launched as soon as June, MRT commuters will be able to earn the points with their rides.

These points can then be used to pay for green products they purchase.

Officials say the initiative is aimed at encouraging the use of public transport and other environmentally friendly behavior – and is expected to include users of the metro systems, credit cards and electronic receipts.

So far, only hypermarket chains a.mart and RT-mart have agreed to take part in the scheme.
