Rocksteady has released the latest trailer for the fourth and final game in the Batman Arkham series. This takes place approximately a year after the events of Arkham City (game 2). This trailer is supposedly all game-play footage, though there are bits in there (especially in the beginning) that look like cut-scenes.

First off, characters we can expect to see. We’ve got returning villains Scarecrow, who is apparently back in town to bring other villains together to take down the Bat once and for all; Penguin; Two-face (I think this is his first appearance in the series as a true villain; he was mentioned in the first game, and appeared in the second but not as a primary antagonist); Harley Quinn; and the Arkham Knight, a character created specifically for this game, who is reportedly a more militant version of Batman himself. And from the trailer, it looks like the two come to blows, with the Arkham Knight getting the upper hand… at least temporarily. We all know that Batman will come back from any defeat! As for his real identity…I have a hunch, which I will keep to myself for the time being! The Riddler is set to make another appearance in this game, and I’m sure other villains will show up as well.

The trailer didn’t show only villains, though. We also see Police Commissioner James Gordon, as well as his daughter Barbara, the former Batgirl and the current Oracle. We’ve heard Oracle’s voice before in Arkham Asylum and City, but this is our first look at her in person.

As for Batman himself…he looks like he has a more high-tech Batsuit than we’ve seen in previous games. And of course, we finally have the addition of the Batmobile! We’ve seen the Batplane/Batwing in previous games, which we could use to fast-travel between locations, but this is the first time we’ll actually be able to drive on Gotham’s streets. Apparently, the size of the Gotham City we can explore in this game is some three times the size of Arkham City’s map. So we’ll need a set of good wheels…that come with rocket launchers. Because Batman.

Gameplay-wise, this looks a bit grim and grittier than even the previous Batman games in the series. I don’t remember seeing such an explicitly bloody guy like we see in the trailer, and it looks like Batman is also squaring off against thugs who are a lot tougher and better trained than the gangsters in previous games. Whatever carnage Scarecrow and his coalition are up to, it’s going to be big.

Greatly looking forward to this! Expect it this October, for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
