The Taipei City government’s Public Transportation Office says it is reviewing a proposal to hike taxi fares in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung.

The statement follows calls by the Business Association of Taipei Taxi Transportation to increase fares due to rising fuel costs.

Under the plan, the basic rate will remain at 70 NT – but that will only include the first 1000 meters as opposed to the current 1,250 meters.

A charge of 5 NT will be added every 200 meters traveled – down from the current 250 meters.

Officials say the increase will average out at an additional 20 NT per ride.
