Narrator: Do you feel like the summers are getting
hotter?　應該是全球暖化的原因吧? According to scientists, the weather is
becoming hotter and hotter because of global warming.

Many scientists think global warming is making the earth's temperature become
hotter.

They think the world is becoming hotter because of many different reasons.

但其中一個原因呢，就是汙染。

Cars on the street create pollution. This makes the air dirty.

Some factories also create smoke. This also pollutes the air and makes it
dirty.

Scientists say these things make the world slowly become hotter.

那動物怎麼辦呢?

Scientists say some animals might be able change the way they live.

They need to change so they can live in hotter temperatures.
動物需要適應環境。

HOWEVER, scientists are worried some animals might not be able to change
quickly enough.

That means they might all die.

So how can we help?

我們需要保護我們的環境。We also need to protect animals' homes.

We need to pollute less, and we can do this by trying to create less garbage.

We also need to try to recycle more. 要記得回收喔!

And that is how we can help protect the earth.

200 years of Bicycles

Hi everyone!
騎腳踏車好好玩喔! 你會騎嗎?
I learned how to ride a bicycle when I was in the fifth grade … and I still
ride a bicycle whenever I can!
Using a bicycle is a smart idea. 不用汽油或馬達 … you just need your legs!
Sit on the seat, put your feet on the pedals … push the pedals and go! --
It's pedal power! Amazing! Such a great idea!
So, who had this smart idea? 是誰先發明腳踏車?
Well, the answer is: a lot of people.
The first idea for a bicycle is more than 200 years old! It was made in
Germany. But the first bicycle didn't have pedals … you put your feet on the
ground and pushed the bicycle forward with your legs.
Now, bicycles use pedals, a chain, and gears …. now, you can ride a bicycle
really far and really fast!
腳踏車改變了全世界。 Today, lots of people use "public bicycles."
"Public" means "for people" and … well … you know what "bicycle" means,
right?
A public bicycle is a bicycle anyone can borrow - or rent - for only a little
money. It's an easy and convenient idea!
In Taipei, public bicycles are called "U-Bikes" and in Kaohsiung, they are
called "C-Bikes."台灣到處都找得到腳踏車!
Hey … maybe we don't need so many cars or motorcycles…we can ride bicycles!
Bicycles are clean and quiet … and you can get some exercise when you ride
them, too!
And did you know? Taiwan makes really good bicycles! All over the world,
people love bicycles made in Taiwan. Cool, right?
I'm really glad so many people had great ideas that gave us bicycles! Pedal
power is amazing!

Taiwan's Electric Trains

I'm going to Taitung tomorrow. I'm so excited!

Taitung is on the east side of Taiwan, we call that the "East Coast."
我好期待明天要去台東！它在台灣的「東海岸」。

I'm going to take a train from Kaohsiung to Taitung!

And guess what?

The train ride from Kaohsiung to Taitung takes less than 2 hours now!
現在從高雄搭火車到台東，不用兩個小時。

It's faster now because it uses electricity.

And now all of the trains in Taiwan use electricity!
台灣現在所有的火車都電氣化，也更快了。

The old trains used a kind of gasoline... like a car. They are slower and
there is pollution!

The new electric trains are quiet, faster and there is no pollution!
現在的火車改用電，比較安靜、比較快更快而且不會有污染！

There are about 1,100 kilometers of rail lines in Taiwan…

They make a big circle around us! 鐵路繞台灣一圈，大約有1100公里長，so it
took a long time, more than 20 years, to make all of Taiwan's rail lines
electric, but now it's finished. 花超過20年，把鐵路全都電氣化！

Taking an electric train is faster and quieter and there's no pollution.

And, I can get to Taitung tomorrow in just under 2 hours! That's really fast!

The east coast of Taiwan is really beautiful!

Looking out of the train window, I'm going to see mountains and then... the

Burning Mountain of Coal

People use coal for many things. Old trains burn coal to make steam… that's
how a choo-choo-train works!
煤可以來拿做很多事，像蒸汽火車，需要燃燒煤炭才能動。

Coal is found deep in the earth. It looks like black rocks.
煤礦在地底深處，長得很像黑色的石頭。

Today we try not to burn coal because it's not clean. When you burn coal, it
makes the air dirty, and if we breathe the dirty air... it hurts our lungs.
燒煤炭會造成空氣汙染，也對肺有害。

But sometimes people don't burn coal … nature burns coal. Deep under the
ground, coal sometimes catches fire and burns. And, sometimes it burns for a
really long time. 大自然有時候也會自己燃燒煤炭，而且可以燒很久唷。

There is a mountain in Australia... where one natural coal fire has burned
for a crazy long time! This coal fire is inside the mountain, and scientists
say it has burned for more than 6,000 years! The mountain is called…
"Burning Mountain"! 在澳洲有一座火焰山，已經燒了6000年了！ 6,000 years is a
really long time!

Nobody knows when it will stop burning...沒人知道什麼時候會停止燃燒。But
don't worry. This coal fire is far away and the smoke doesn't hurt people.

Burning Mountain is just another amazing thing about our amazing world! A

Robot Squid

Some people have another name for the Earth... they call our world the "Blue
Planet".

Why do they call it the Blue Planet? Because most of the Earth is water!
地球大部分是是水，所以被叫做「藍色星球」。

But, we don't know very much about the ocean. It's easy for scientists to
study mountains and land animals... but learning about the ocean is hard!
了解海洋比研究陸地生物還難！所以，目前對海洋認知並不多。

We can't swim deep in the ocean like a whale. We can go down in submarines...
but submarines are sometimes too noisy, and they scare away sea creatures.
人類早就用潛水艇探索海底，但它的聲音和形狀，會把海洋生物嚇跑！

So, scientists are now using a new robot to study the deep ocean.

It looks like a squid! That's really cool. 科學家用像烏賊的機器人來研究深海。
