Saving Water

This year, it hasn't rained very much in many places in Taiwan.

So far this year in Kaohsiung, it only rained a couple of times...and only
for a short time.

No rain means no water! Taiwan has to start saving water!
今年雨水太少，缺水問題嚴重，要節約用水。

But... how can we do that? Stop taking a shower? Stop brushing your teeth?
(laughs) Of course not! That's silly.

But there are some things we can do. When you wash your hands... you can turn
off the water while you scrub with soap... then turn the water back on.
省水的辦法很多，比如洗手要在洗肥皂後，再開水龍頭沖水。

Same with washing dishes. Turn the water on, get the dishes wet... turn the
water off... scrub the dishes... then turn the water back on and rinse them
off. 洗碗也不要一直開著水龍頭，等要沖的時候再開。

And actually, many people take too long in the shower.

Try this: The next time you take a shower... use a clock or a timer. How long
was your shower? 10 minutes? 15 minutes? That's too long!
很多人花十分鐘或十五分鐘洗澡，太久了！

If you can, try to keep your shower to about 5 minutes!
你洗澡需要多久呢？下次試試看只花五分鐘就好。
Yeah, I know... 5 minutes is not a long time... but we can try, right?

If everyone tries to save even a little water… that can make a big
difference. 每個人都節省一點點，就可以省下很多水！

Bubble Concert

Oh, I miss going to concerts. I love seeing bands and singers perform on
stage. And I love hearing live music! 我很喜歡去看演唱會。

But because of the coronavirus many concerts all around the world have been
canceled. 因為疫情，很多表演都被取消了。

That's because there are usually lots of people close together at concerts
and the virus could pass from person to person… and we don't want that!

But what if there was a way we could go to concerts safely?
沒有方法可以安全地看音樂會嗎？

In the USA one band had a pretty good idea. They said "Hey, let's have a
bubble concert!" 在美國，有一個樂團提議做泡泡演唱會！

Each of the band members and each person in the audience got into bubbles!
Pretty safe, right? 每個人都要在泡泡裡，包括樂團，才開始表演喔！

But there are a few problems, like, would the music still sound good inside a
bubble? What if you need the bathroom? And won't it get hot in that bubble?
問題是，泡泡裡面的音質好嗎？要去上廁所怎麼辦？會不會很熱？

Well, they thought of that! Each bubble had a speaker for the music, a bottle
of water, a fan, a towel, and two signs.
在每一個泡泡裡都有喇叭、電扇、毛巾，跟兩個牌子。

One sign said "Hot in here!" and the other sign said "I gotta go pee!" If
anyone held up a sign, a worker came to help them out. 一個牌子寫著
"我好熱！" 另外一個寫 "我要尿尿!" ，只要拿起牌子，就會有人來幫忙喔。

Wow! A bubble concert that sounds like a good idea and a lot of fun too!

Plant-based Bottles

Eeeew! Gross! Look at these dirty plastic bottles that washed up on the sand!
沙灘上有好多塑膠瓶。

I wanted to spend a nice day at the beach, but it's ruined because there is
so much plastic garbage in the ocean!

Scientists say eight million metric tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean
every year. 專家統計，每年有800萬噸塑膠被丟到海裡。

It's a good thing that there are some companies that are trying to fix this
problem.

They want to help reduce plastic waste by using bottles made from plants!
有很多公司想用植物做的瓶罐，來取代塑膠！

A lot of famous and big companies, like Coca-Cola, want to change the way
they package their drinks.

So in the future, when you buy soda, you might be getting your drink in a
paper bottle. It will not be in a plastic bottle.

The paper bottles can be recycled, and can naturally break down within a
year. This is good, because plastic bottles do not break down easily. Plastic
bottles stay in the environment as garbage for a very long time.

Wasting Food is Bad for the Environment

Ugh, I'm so full. I can't possibly eat another bite. But I still have so much
food left on my plate! I really shouldn't waste it.

That's because wasting food is actually very bad for the environment.
浪費食物對環境很糟糕。Did you know that?

Some smart people did research on this problem.

And they found out that a lot of the food that is made all around the world
is wasted!

Food is wasted in people's homes and in restaurants.
全世界有很多地方食物都被浪費了，像是在家裡跟餐廳裡。

Sometimes food is even wasted while it is being made or being delivered from
farms.

Overall, a third of the food that people make in the world isn't actually
eaten! 世界上有三分之一的食物是沒有人吃!

That is so much food!

Experts say one of the best ways we can protect the planet is to waste less
food. 專家說愛惜食物對地球比較好。

This means don't buy or make more food than you need.

You also need to remember not to waste food that you already have, because it
could be used to feed people who really need it.

So try not to ask for more food than you can actually eat.

I'm too full to finish my meal right now, but you know what? I'm not going to
waste it. 我不會把這一餐扔掉。

I'm going to take it home with me and I will finish the rest tomorrow!
