Mosquitoes Like to Bite Some People More Than Others
Aiyah! Go away, mosquitoes! I've only been outside for 5 minutes and I
already have 5 mosquito bites!
I always tell people that mosquitoes like to bite me more than other people,
and people don't believe me.
But, it's true! Scientists found out mosquitoes do like some people more than
others.
Mosquitoes can actually see the air we breathe out. That's how they can find
us and bite us!
But now, scientists say mosquitoes also have another way to find people...
Smell!
All human bodies have a smell.
But some people's smell is a bit different. We can't smell it, but the
mosquitoes can! And when they smell that special smell, it's like chocolate
and candy for them!
There's nothing we can do to change our smell, but maybe we can find new ways
to cover the smell, to make mosquitoes stay away.
Ah, that would be so nice!
What? Another bite? These mosquitoes love me, but I don't love them!

Sneakers for Horses
Did you know that horses wear shoes? They're not shoes like the ones you and
I wear. Our shoes are soft and light, and are made of things like leather or
rubber. A horse's shoes are hard and heavy. They're made of metal!
We keep shoes on our feet by tying them with shoelaces. But we keep shoes on
a horse with metal nails!
That sounds really painful, right? Don't worry, they don't hurt! Horses don't
have feet like we do. They have hooves. Hooves are very thick and hard.
Hooves need to be kept safe, just like our feet. Which is why horses wear
shoes.
Now there's an artist who's helping horses wear the coolest shoes! He's made
special sneakers just for horses! They look exactly like human sneakers!
These sneakers are very expensive: one costs about $40,000 NT, and horses
have four hooves! That's almost $160,000 NT!
But good news! All the money will go to charity. And who knows, maybe soon
horses will have cooler shoes than people!

Baby Elephant Tickles Reporter
News reporters have a very serious job.
They tell people about important events (重大事件,重大新聞) happening around
the world.
Many times, the events they are talking about are not happy events.
But one reporter in Kenya couldn't help laughing during his report.
Alvin Kaunda was reporting at a wildlife rescue center (野生動物救援中心) in
the city of Nairobi.
The center helps elephants and rhinos.
Alvin was standing in front of several orphaned baby elephants
And he started by talking about how the center helps the elephants.
At first everything was going well.
But as Alvin was talking, one of the young elephants put its trunk (象鼻) on
his shoulder.
It's a 4-year-old female elephant, named Kindani.
Alvin stays calm and keeps talking.
But Kindani doesn't stop.
She next uses her trunk to feel Alvin's ear.
Then she moves her trunk to the top of his head, and feels his hair.
Alvin stays very professional (專業), and talks about the importance of
protecting the environment.
But then Kindani moves her trunk onto Alvin's face.
She curiously (好奇的) feels his nose and even puts her trunk onto Alvin's
mouth.
Finally, Alvin couldn't hold it together anymore and burst into laughter.
Even though Alvin was interrupted (被打斷), his message was very clear:
He said "...it is up to us to be guardians of our own natural world".

Squirrels Go Nuts for the World Cup
Sports fans are going nuts for the World Cup
And so are squirrels!
A man in the U.K. has made an obstacle course in his backyard.
And the course is World-Cup-themed!
Steve Barley says first, the squirrels have to climb through a tunnel.
Then they have to get through many obstacles (障礙物), like a giant red card.
At the end of the course, the squirrels have to jump over a toy goalkeeper
And through a goal post (球門)...
To get to a big tube that's filled with delicious nuts!
Steve has posted videos of squirrels going through the course online.
The videos have been watched more than four million times.

Taiwan's Chiayi Woos Muslim travelers With Mountain Adventure
What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Chiayi?
Usually, it's Alishan (阿里山).
The mountain is famous for its sunrise, sea of clouds, and forest railways.
But the mountain is not the only attraction Chiayi has to offer.
Recently, a group of Muslim (穆斯林) tourists from Malaysia was treated to a
trip to Chiayi.
This was part of a travel promotion targeting Muslims.
Their itinerary (行程) included Zengwen Reservoir (曾文水庫), recreational
farms, and a park on the Alishan range.
This was part of the county government's campaign to promote tours that
included Halal-certified (清真認證) restaurants.
To be Halal certified, the food has to be prepared according to Islam Law
For example, Muslims do not eat pork (豬肉).
Even the cooking equipment cannot ever come into contact with pork.
The animals used for food also have to be prepared according to Islamic
ritual rites (儀式).
Although the requirements are strict, the government is confident that there
will be more Muslim-friendly attractions in the future.

Self-Driving Robotaxis are Taking Off in China
Imagine hopping into a taxi... and realizing that there's no driver!
This is a goal that car manufacturers are working to achieve.
In China, one company might have just gotten closer to making it a reality.
AutoX announced that it had rolled out fully autonomous (自動駕駛) cars on
public roads in Shenzhen (深圳).
Previously, companies operating autonomous vehicles on public roads were
required to have safety drivers inside.
AutoX currently has completely removed the backup driver or any remote
operators (遠程操作員) for its cars.
The company released a video of its autonomous vehicle navigating (導航) on
its own, through the city's downtown area.
The video also shows passengers getting in, and the vehicle veering past
pedestrians to perform a U-turn.
The CEO says the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the need for contactless
This led to the acceleration of the development of autonomous artificial
intelligence, or A.I.
Although the A.I. for autonomous vehicles is not ready to go fully public,
the developers are hopeful that the time is near.
So, don't be too surprised if you don't see a driver in your taxi in the
future!

Scientists Use Carbon Dioxide from Human Breath as Fertilizer
We all know that when there's too many people in a room, the temperature
rises.
This is partly due to the CO2 that we breathe out.
It traps the heat, causing the temperature to rise.
However, in Boston University, researchers put the gas to good use.
They directed the CO2 coming from a campus building's exhaust vents (排氣口)
to a rooftop garden.
They grew two groups of the same plants, corn and spinach (菠菜).
The CO2 was directed to one group, but not the other.
And control fans were installed, to enable the researchers to control the
amount of CO2 reaching the vegetables.
Over time, the researchers discovered that the spinach with CO2 grew up to
four times larger than usual.
The corn also grew up to twice the usual size.
Other elements might have contributed to the growth of the vegetables.
But the researchers are optimistic (樂觀) that the system can be improved,
and implemented (實施) in many buildings.
The concept of taking high concentrations (濃度) of CO2 from human
respiration (呼吸) and using it on a rooftop farm is exciting.
Who knows, maybe rooftop gardens might produce better vegetables than farms
one day!
