Hi there, it's time for an all-new episode of News Bites.
I'm Jeffrey Mo.
And I'm Jacob Ingram.
In this episode, we'll be talking about the history of surfing in Taiwan …
… and about a Canadian girl whose autistic student changed the way she saw
the world.
And in this episode's News Flash, legend.

The history of surfing in Taiwan
Some of you might know that you can go surfing (衝浪) around much of Taiwan.
After all, all you really need is a beach and some waves (波浪).
But surfing was actually off-limits (不能做的) to most Taiwanese citizens for
many years.
American soldiers stationed in Taiwan (當年派駐在台灣的美軍) brought surfing
here after World War II and the Chinese Civil War.
During martial law (戒嚴), the government was afraid that spies (間諜) from
Communist China might enter Taiwan.
So they banned (禁止) the Taiwanese from surfing - but American soldiers
still had special permission to surf.
They would surf at Camp McCauley, a weekend getaway (週末渡假勝地) near
Yehliu (野柳) on the northeast coast of Taiwan, in New Taipei City.
A man named Jeff Sun (孫耀聖) is often considered to be the godfather of
surfing (衝浪運動教父) in Taiwan.
He was born in Taiwan in 1952 and was lucky enough to be able to hang out
with these American soldiers as a teenager.
When he was 25, Jeff moved to Hawaii himself and learned to surf from some of
the legends of the sport.
After returning to Taiwan in the early 1980s, he worked as a lifeguard
(救生員) on Fulong Beach (福隆海水浴場).
Then, after he took a job in Taipei, Jeff would still head out to Honeymoon
Bay (蜜月灣) in Yilan County on the 4:30 AM train, just so that he could surf
before work!
He would actually go out with a radio DJ from ICRT (ICRT廣播電臺主持人) - in
other words, with one of our predecessors (前輩)!
Eventually, he moved out to Honeymoon Bay and opened the Jeff Surf Shop.
Why are we talking about surfing?
Well, a new book has just come out (上市) by an American photojournalist
The photojournalist travelled around the world, trying to find the best
undiscovered surf spots (尋找還沒有成名的衝浪地點).
That's why he visited Taiwan - and he talks about all this history in his
book!
Jeff still has a surf shop at Wushih Harbour (烏石港) in Yilan County.

Canadian teenager learns life lessons from an autistic child, and wins an
essay competition because of it!
Lily Hua is a grade 11 student from the suburbs of Toronto, Canada's largest
Lily wrote an essay (論文) that won first place in a national contest!
Her essay was about how an autistic boy (自閉症男孩) changed how she saw the
world.
On weekends, Lily works as a swimming instructor.
Every Saturday, a little 7-year-old boy in neon green swim trunks
的綠色游泳褲) would be in her class.
But he would ignore her instructions (不理會麗莉的指導) and just ask whether
it was time to go home yet.
Lily thought that she was a bad teacher and, just like the little boy, wanted
the lesson to be over.
But then, two months after the swim class started, Lily's supervisor (老闆)
told her that the boy was autistic!
So she went home and learned as much as she could about autism (自閉症).
She learned that a crowded pool (擁擠的游泳池) can sound like unrelenting
static noise (連續的噪音) to an autistic child.
Some autistic children have a hard time understanding verbal commands
So Lily changed her approach
She got him some earplugs (耳塞) to lessen (降低) the sounds of the pool.
And she used pictures to show him how to breathe underwater
and how to flutter kick
After all, why should the 7-year-old boy be the one to adapt (適應) to the
teenage girl?
Through Lily's efforts (她的努力), the boy passed his swimming exam!
Lily said that he was capable all along (一直有能力) - but now, she was
capable of realising (意識到) that.
Lily thinks that society puts the blame on the child
instead of the system.
Children aren't the ones who need to prove (證明) that they're capable of
learning.
Instead, teachers should prove that they're capable of teaching you.

News Flash
In today's News Flash, our vocabulary word is legend.
In its most traditional meaning, a legend (傳說) is a story about a person
who might or might not have actually existed a long, long time ago.
There's the legend of King Arthur, and in Chinese folklore, there's the
legend of Chiu Yuan (屈原) and the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節).
A legend (圖例) is also that part of a map or a chart that explains what all
of the symbols mean.
But we also use legend (傳奇人物) for a person who is so extraordinary that
he might inspire legends.
Some people might say that Shohei Ohtani is an absolute legend.
In this story, Jeff Sun, the Taiwanese surfer, moved to Hawaii and learned
from legends in the sport of surfing.
