Will Taiwan Have Longer, Hotter Summers?
Oh boy, it's so hot. Let's go for a drive to cool down.
天啊，真的好熱。我們去開車兜風。

Ugh. There are so many cars on the road. Hey, we need to get some gas!
路上有好多車，而且我們還需要加油！

Summers are hot in Taiwan. We turn on air conditioners to cool down. Maybe we
go for drives and use gas. When we do these things, we use fossil fuels.
台灣的夏天真的很熱，我們都會開冷氣或是開車出去兜風，都會用到化石燃料。

What happens if our fossil fuel use doesn't change? Climate change will make
Taiwan's summers hotter and longer.
如果我們不減少化石燃料的使用，氣候變遷會讓台灣的夏天又長又熱。

By the year 2100, our summers will be 210 days long! Noooooo! Do you like
36-degree days? There will be 75 more!
到了2100年，台灣的夏天會長達210天！36度的天氣會多75天喔！

Climate change will also bring more heavy rain. More floods will happen.
There will be fewer typhoons. But... they'll be stronger!
氣候變遷還會帶來強降雨，就會更常淹水。颱風雖然會變少，但是颱風的強度會更強。

Longer, hotter summers, more floods, and stronger typhoons will make life
harder for everyone.
又長又熱的夏天、很多的水災以及強颱都會讓我們的日子不好過。
We need to do more to slow down climate change. We don't want longer, hotter
summers, right? Let's find ways to use less fossil fuels. Seven months of
summer is too long!

Green Electricity in Taitung

Deep in the earth, it's very, very hot.

In Taiwan, under Taitung, it's very, very, very hot! The water there is hot
too. It's so hot that it makes lots of steam!
台東地底下的溫度非常高，地下水也很燙，會產生很多的蒸氣。

The hot water and steam come out of the earth. The hot water makes hot
springs. Many people go to Taitung's hot springs. They sit and relax … ahh!
Clouds of steam go up and away.
熱水跟蒸氣從地底下冒出來就變成溫泉。很多人會到台東泡溫泉放鬆。

Some companies had a big idea. They helped the Bunun people with a hot spring
park. The companies will also use the steam in the earth. They will make
green electricity. Green electricity means it's good for the earth!
有一些公司想到不錯的主意，他們幫布農族建了溫泉園區。這些公司也利用地熱發展綠能，對環境友善。

First, they made a deep hole. They are testing it now. The steam will try to
get out. You can see this with a kettle at home.
首先他們鑽了一個很深的洞，試著讓蒸汽冒出來，就像是在燒開水。

In Taitung, when the steam gets out, it will spin a big wheel. The spinning
wheel will make electricity. It can make electricity for 2,500 houses!

The heat deep in the earth can make lots of good things happen in Taiwan! Go,
steam, go!

Glove puppetry made from sand

What do Taiwanese glove puppetry and sand have in common?

They will both be features (特點) in the 2022 Fulong International Sand
Sculpture Arts Festival in New Taipei City!

The feature for the event will be sculptures made out of sand.

A total of 36 sand sculptures (沙雕) will be displayed on weekends from May
26th to October 10th.

They are made by mixing water and sand, then piled into wooden forms to make
the shape.

Then, it is pressed together to make the base so that the artist can continue
making their sculpture.

The main highlight (主要亮點) will be an eight-meter-tall sand statue of Su
Huan-jen, the main character of Pili.

Pili is one of Taiwan's best known glove puppetry shows (布袋戲)。

The TV series debuted in 1984, and it still continues today.

It is one of the most popular TV shows in Taiwan.

Unlike traditional puppet shows, Pili uses computers to make the action
sequences (動作場景)。

There will also be sculptures of Su in different disguises (裝扮), and many
other Pili characters, too.

During the event, visitors will also have a chance to meet with the actors
behind these fictional characters (虛構人物) and take part in other
activities.

Visitors can enjoy concerts (演唱會),

eat food and buy souvenirs (伴手禮) at a market,

and experience workshops (工作坊) to try their hand at making sand sculptures.

The sun disrupts our radio signals.

A sunspot (太陽黑子) threw off a double solar flare on April 25th, causing
some radios to stop working in Asia and Australia.

Sunspots are areas that appear dark on the surface of the Sun.

They appear dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun's
surface.

Solar flares are a sudden explosion of energy caused by magnetic field lines
near sunspots.
(太陽耀斑是由太陽黑子附近的磁場線引起的能量突然爆炸。)

Scientists called the Sunspot AR2993.

The sunspot AR2993 erupted (爆發) with two flares very quickly.

And the magnetic wave (磁波) was strong enough to stop radios on Earth.

They say it's "medium-sized", but it is actually hundreds of millions of
kilometers big.

Earth would sit in the active region as comfortably as an egg in a nest.

Solar flares not only cause disruption (中斷) on our radio signals,

But they also light up the night sky in the North and South Pole, making
beautiful auroras (極光) that we can see.

Eating meat grown in a lab is good for the planet - and your health!

Eating meat grown in labs or ground up insects (磨碎的昆蟲) could help the
environment, reduce carbon emissions, and use less water.

Researchers say these kinds of foods could cut pollution (污染) on the planet
by 80%.

But it's not clear if people want to eat bugs or meat grown in labs.

Scientists are trying to figure out another way to grow food so that it has
more protein (蛋白質) while using less land and water.

The researchers looked at the nutrition of some of those products and three
types of environmental pressure: water use, land use, and carbon emissions
(碳排放量).

Alternative foods can reduce these impacts by 80-percent while providing more
nutrients (營養素) than a vegan or a vegetarian diet.

New foods include ground up flies and crickets, eggs made in the lab from
chicken cells(細胞), and seaweed and mushrooms.

A professor from Cambridge thinks it may be better, but changing people's
diets will be hard.

Many studies have shown that eating a plant-based diet (植物性飲食) is good
for you and the environment.

So make sure to eat more vegetables every day!

Vyshyvanka Day in Taipei increases Ukraine awareness

Vyshyvanka Day is an international day for Ukrainian folk traditions
(烏克蘭民間傳統)。

People make and wear embroidered clothes (刺繡衣服) called vyshyvankas.

These types of clothes are one of the best known symbols (象徵) of Ukrainian
culture.

People in Taipei celebrated (慶祝) Vyshyvanka Day this year.

The celebration was held by a volunteer organization (志願者組織) called
Taiwan Stands with Ukraine.

Organizers say they hope to raise awareness of Russia's war in Ukraine.
(籌辦者表示，他們希望提高人們對俄羅斯在烏克蘭的戰爭的認識。)

They set up an outdoor picnic and market selling Ukrainian food, drinks, and
souvenirs (紀念品)。

Vyshyvanka Day is usually celebrated on the third Sunday in May with picnics,
markets, and parades(遊行)。

But this year, people in Ukraine could not celebrate it because of the
war(戰爭)。

The organizers in Taipei said this does not stop people around the world from
celebrating the day.

They said the picnic is a great opportunity to show people that Ukrainian
culture matters and that it is a beautiful culture.

The group hopes that the event can raise awareness and bring in more
donations(捐款) for Ukrainian refugees(難民)。

Visitors to the event could buy special stickers (貼紙) and make their own
motanka dolls(莫坦卡娃娃)。

Motanka dolls are a symbol for healing, protection, and family.
(莫坦卡娃娃是治愈、保護和家庭的象徵。)

迪士尼犀牛戴健身追蹤器

A Disney rhino gets a fitness tracker

Fitness trackers are a special device (設備) that people wear to see how many
steps they take in one day.

Many people wear them to keep track (追蹤) of their steps, heart rate(心率),
and exercise.

Well, someone new is joining that group of people…

Only she isn't human: she's a 30-year-old white rhino(白犀牛)!

Her name is Helen, and she is one of the animals who lives in the savanna
(稀樹草原) at Disney World.

She wears the fitness tracker around her ankle (腳踝) so that her caretakers
can know when she is walking, running, or napping (午睡)。

They can also see which part of the man-made (人造) savanna she likes the
most.

The information will be shared with other researchers who are studying the
best way to take care of rhinos.
(收集的材料與研究人員分享讓他們了解如何照顧白犀牛。)

They can learn more about rhinos' physical fitness (身體素質) and make sure
they are healthy and happy.

There are around 27-thousand rhinos that live in the wild.
(大約有 2.7 萬頭犀牛生活在野外。)

Most of them live in national parks and reserves(國家公園和保護區.)

Some species of rhinos are critically endangered.
(一些犀牛物種極度瀕危。)

That's why it's important to learn more about these animals, so we can
protect (保護) them.

A Paralympian wants people to walk to school

How do you travel to school?

Some people walk, while others take the bus or MRT, ride a scooter, or cycle.

Driving is also common in the UK, and it's something British Paralympian
(殘奧會運動員) Dame Sarah Storey wants to change.

She became the new Cycling and Walking Commissioner (自行車和步行專員) for
the Greater Manchester area, and she hopes parents can look for different
ways to take their children to school.

She recently visited two schools in her country to support their launch
(啟動) of the 'School Streets' project.

The project aims to reduce air pollution, limit road danger, and help
children live a healthier lifestyle by encouraging them to walk more.
(這計劃希望減少空氣污染，限制道路危險，並鼓勵兒童多走路來幫助他們更健康。)

Roads are closed during school drop-off and pick-up times, limiting the
number of cars in the area.
(學校上下學期間道路關閉，限制了汽車數量。)

She feels that having more cars near schools can make it more dangerous for
children to walk there.

Dame Sarah says making sure there are no vehicles (車輛) at the school gates
means parents will feel more safe and the children will feel more confident
(有自信 ) 。

TaiwanFest Brings Ghost Month to New York

Do you believe in ghosts?

Are you scared of ghost tales?

On August 7th, the TaiwanFest market was held in Washington Square Park in
New York City.

The market usually has lots of Taiwanese cuisine and culture for people to
enjoy.

紐約的華盛頓廣場在8月7日舉辦了紐約台灣節，讓遊客了解台灣傳統文化及美食。

But this year, the market also had a "Ghost Month flavor".

People set up a traditional altar.

There was no music and dance performances (表演), because it was in a
residential area (住宅區).

However, there were other types of entertainment.

There was also a sign in the shape of Taiwan at the entrance (入口) to the
event.

Many people held incense sticks and prayed at the altar.

Other people demonstrated Chinese calligraphy.

Hsu Puo-chen (許伯丞), one of the main organizers of the event, says
Washington Square Park use to be a cemetery (墓園).

That gave him the idea of setting up an altar at the market.

So, hungry souls at the market were able to enjoy Taiwanese staples such as
boba tea, steamed buns, and Hakka lei cha.

Many people also enjoyed shopping and buying jewelry, cosmetics, and other
cultural knick-knacks (小擺飾).

The Famous Eiffel Tower

Did you know?

The Eiffel Tower is one of the world's most famous sights!

Do you know how old it is?
你知道世界上有名的艾菲鐵塔幾歲了嗎？

The 324-meter-tall iron (鐵) tower attracts millions of tourists to Paris
every year.

It is one of the most iconic (指標性的) buildings in the world.

And it is now 133 years old!

324公尺高的鐵塔每年為巴黎吸引了上百萬的遊客，它是世界上最有指標性的建築物之一喔!
而如今，它已經133歲了！

Engineers recently found that its metal is full of rust (銹).

Engineers say that there are many cracks (裂縫), and the tower needs many
repairs (修補).

Construction of the Eiffel Tower started in January 1887.

It opened to the public (公眾) on March 31st, 1889.

It was built to celebrate the 1889 World's Fair in Paris.

The tower was supposed to be taken down (被拆除) after 20 years.

However, the French government decided to keep the tower.

The tower is now being repainted (重新粉刷) for the 2024 Olympics.

Flying Taxis Could Be Here in the Next Three Years

Here's something you may not have imagined.

A new way of getting around could be with us in the next few years... flying
taxis!
一個新的交通工具即將登場...會飛的計程車!

Many of us grew up watching sci-fi movies (科幻電影) with airborne (空中的)
taxis.

Science fiction (科幻小說) is now becoming science fact (科學事實).

Japanese airline ANA is working with a U.S. tech start-up called "Joby
Aviation".

The two companies want to start operating air taxis at the 2025 World Expo
(世界博覽會) in Osaka.

Right now, they are trying to build the flying vehicle (交通工具).

They also need to work out what traffic rules (交通規則) the taxis will need
to follow, and what kind of training (訓練) flying taxi pilots (機師) will
need.

The five-seat, all-electric taxi will be able to take off and land vertically
(垂直地).

It will be able to fly 241 kilometers.

And it will have a top speed (最高速度) of 321 kilometers per hour.

Joby's CEO said the taxis would help people save time.

He says the taxis would also help people reduce their carbon footprint
(減少碳足跡).
