Be Nice to the Sea Turtles!

Hi everybody! I love swimming and snorkeling! 我喜歡游泳還有浮潛 Snorkeling is
great … why? Well, because I can see and swim … like a fish!

You can see so many beautiful things in the ocean around Taiwan … pretty
fish … colorful coral … and my favorite ……………………. SEA TURTLES!
海裡可以看到魚珊瑚還有海龜

I know about a wonderful little island near Pingtung in southern Taiwan -the
water is so clean 南臺灣有個地方水很乾淨… and many people like to go there
for swimming and snorkeling 很多人會去浮潛.-- That's right! The island is
called XIAOLIUCHIU! XiaoLiuChiu is great! But can you guess my favorite thing
about that island? Sea Turtles!

You can see sea turtles … see sea turtles in the sea!

But some people are not very nice to the ocean! They throw garbage into the
sea! 有些人會丟垃圾到海裡. That's not cool! And some people are not so nice
to the sea turtles. They touch them and even step on them!
有人會摸海龜或是踩他們- HEY! -That's rude! 這樣很沒禮貌耶

We should never throw garbage in the ocean, right? The poor sea turtles might
eat the garbage! They could get sick! Oh No!
我們不應該丟垃圾到海裡啦，海龜吃了會生病的

Let's be nice to the Xiaoliuchiu sea turtles, ok? And let's take care of
XiaoLiuChiu Island. We can swim near the sea turtles … and we can look at
them… but we never touch them! OK?

WasteShark

How's it going, everyone? Ready for another storytime? Let's get right into
it!

Ahhh! The ocean….. Home to some amazing creatures.
海洋裡有很多很多豐富的生物.

Like tuna fish..... whales ... dolphins… and......trash cans? .........
Huh? In the ocean?

Yep. 沒錯. 現在海裡有垃圾桶! There are now trash cans in the ocean!

But these aren't just any trash cans. These are very special trash cans.
這些垃圾桶很特別! They can swim and have really biiiig mouths!

But what do you call a swimming trash can with a big mouth that hunts garbage?

It's called WasteShark! Waste就是 汙染... and shark 就是鯊魚! …….Uh nope...
That's not right. …..Yeah, that's more like it!

WasteShark acts kind of like a garbage truck... but in the water! Collecting
the trash floating on top in harbors and rivers.
像垃圾車一樣WasteShark會幫忙撿水上的垃圾

Doesn't it make you sad to see trash on the ground or floating around in
water? 看到地上或水上有垃圾, 不會難過嗎?

Well, the WasteShark's big mouth is perfect for catching trash and other
waste we don't want on the water's surface.
WasteShark的大嘴巴剛好可以塞很多垃圾. WasteShark can also tell the water's
temperature and check that it is safe and clean. WasteShark 還會測溫度跟汙染!

The idea for WasteShark comes from a…. whale shark! The biggest fish in the
world! WasteShark 的靈感來自於鯨鯊, 世界上最大的魚. Whale sharks and
Wastesharks both swim around with their huge mouths open
Ahhhhh! 一直開嘴巴吃東西.

But don't worry, WasteShark doesn't bite, okay? And it also won't hurt any
little fish or other wildlife. 不用擔心, WasteShark 不會吃小魚或動物.
WasteShark only eats trash!

Great Barrier Reef has very poor outlook

Narrator: Scuba diving is so peaceful. I love it.

你會潛水嗎? My favorite place to go scuba diving is at the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is in Australia. 你去過澳洲嗎?

There are so many different and beautiful kinds of fish there.

那裡也有好多不一樣顏色的珊瑚喔! When I went scuba diving at the Great Barrier
Reef, I saw coral that was blue, yellow, green,red and purple.

I didn't know coral could be so many different colors!

However, the Great Barrier Reef is in danger. 大堡礁現在有危機。

Let me tell you why.

Here we are, at the Great Barrier Reef. But what happened to the coral? And
where are all the fish?

The coral isn't colorful anymore. It has all turned an ugly white color.
珊瑚都變白了，魚也都不見了。怎麼會這樣?

What's that over there?

There is also a lot of construction happening on the land near the Great
Barrier Reef. This is hurting all the beautiful and colorful coral.

And look over there.

There are a lot of fishermen fishing in the ocean around the Great Barrier
Reef.

This is probably why all the fish disappeared.

But it isn't too late to save the Great Barrier Reef.

We can still protect it.

We can protect the Great Barrier Reef by fishing less, and leaving the land
around it alone. 如果我們減少捕魚我們就可以保護大堡礁。

If we leave the land alone, the Great Barrier Reef can grow naturally and the
fish can live there peacefully.

If we work together to protect the Great Barrier Reef, the coral could slowly
become healthy again.

Then all of its wonderful colors might come back.

Also fish might come back and live there again.

Wouldn't that be nice? Then everyone could scuba dive there and see how
beautiful it is.

Robot Squid

Some people have another name for the Earth... they call our world the "Blue
Planet".

Why do they call it the Blue Planet? Because most of the Earth is water!
地球大部分是是水，所以被叫做「藍色星球」。

But, we don't know very much about the ocean. It's easy for scientists to
study mountains and land animals... but learning about the ocean is hard!
了解海洋比研究陸地生物還難！所以，目前對海洋認知並不多。

We can't swim deep in the ocean like a whale. We can go down in submarines...
but submarines are sometimes too noisy, and they scare away sea creatures.
人類早就用潛水艇探索海底，但它的聲音和形狀，會把海洋生物嚇跑！

So, scientists are now using a new robot to study the deep ocean.

It looks like a squid! That's really cool. 科學家用像烏賊的機器人來研究深海。

Yeah! The robot squid also moves just like a real squid moves. I think this
is a great idea. Other sea creatures will look at it and think, "Hmm... it's
just a squid". 其他的海洋生物看到，只會覺得那是一隻烏賊。

With this squid-robot, scientists can study the deep oceans and discover new
and amazing things.

Two-thirds of the Earth is water. We still have a lot to learn... and who
knows? Maybe the squid robot will find new kinds of fish or... old ships with

Saving Water

This year, it hasn't rained very much in many places in Taiwan.

So far this year in Kaohsiung, it only rained a couple of times...and only
for a short time.

No rain means no water! Taiwan has to start saving water!
今年雨水太少，缺水問題嚴重，要節約用水。

But... how can we do that? Stop taking a shower? Stop brushing your teeth?
(laughs) Of course not! That's silly.

But there are some things we can do. When you wash your hands... you can turn
off the water while you scrub with soap... then turn the water back on.
省水的辦法很多，比如洗手要在洗肥皂後，再開水龍頭沖水。

Same with washing dishes. Turn the water on, get the dishes wet... turn the
water off... scrub the dishes... then turn the water back on and rinse them
off. 洗碗也不要一直開著水龍頭，等要沖的時候再開。

And actually, many people take too long in the shower.

Try this: The next time you take a shower... use a clock or a timer. How long
was your shower? 10 minutes? 15 minutes? That's too long!
很多人花十分鐘或十五分鐘洗澡，太久了！

If you can, try to keep your shower to about 5 minutes!
你洗澡需要多久呢？下次試試看只花五分鐘就好。
Yeah, I know... 5 minutes is not a long time... but we can try, right?

If everyone tries to save even a little water… that can make a big
