An Arctic Fox's Amazing Journey

Oh, excuse me just a moment. I'm just going to have a glass of water. ……
Ahhh! Hmmm… my ice cubes are almost gone. 冰塊幾乎沒了...

Ice melts when it's warm, right? And when ice melts, it turns into water.
冰融化了變成水 對不對?

And you know where there's lots of ice... 你們知道哪裡都是冰嗎? The North and
South Poles! 北極跟南極!

But did you know, the ice, just like in my glass of water, is melting?...
That's right, 那邊的冰正在融化了.

This has an effect on some animals too.

She traveled from Norway in Northern Europe, all the way to Canada in North
America! 3,500 kilometers!
That's a long way! 從挪威到加拿大! Wow! 真的是好遠喔!

The little fox walked on ice and crossed frozen seas to get there!
牠走在結冰的海上! Brr!

I hope she had some nice warm clothes... maybe a hat... 希望牠有記得穿外套,
戴帽子... Wait, do foxes wear hats? Ha! Of course not.

They have their own thick, natural fur coat to keep them nice and warm.
狐狸當然不會戴帽子拉! 牠的毛夠溫暖. Good job, little fox!

But why did the little fox leave home? And why did the fox go so far away?

Scientists think it's because the fox's home is changing. It's melting, just
like my ice cubes.. And It's melting because the earth is warming up… and
that's a bad thing… it means animals are losing their homes 地球暖化
有些動物的家不見了.

But there is something we can do... We can help by saving energy! So when
you're not watching TV, turn it off! Leaving the room? Hit that light switch!

And when you throw away trash, please remember to recycle! 記得要省電.

Be Nice to the Sea Turtles!

Hi everybody! I love swimming and snorkeling! 我喜歡游泳還有浮潛 Snorkeling is
great … why? Well, because I can see and swim … like a fish!

You can see so many beautiful things in the ocean around Taiwan … pretty
fish … colorful coral … and my favorite ……………………. SEA TURTLES!
海裡可以看到魚珊瑚還有海龜

I know about a wonderful little island near Pingtung in southern Taiwan -the
water is so clean 南臺灣有個地方水很乾淨… and many people like to go there
for swimming and snorkeling 很多人會去浮潛.-- That's right! The island is
called XIAOLIUCHIU! XiaoLiuChiu is great! But can you guess my favorite thing
about that island? Sea Turtles!

You can see sea turtles … see sea turtles in the sea!

But some people are not very nice to the ocean! They throw garbage into the
sea! 有些人會丟垃圾到海裡. That's not cool! And some people are not so nice
to the sea turtles. They touch them and even step on them!
有人會摸海龜或是踩他們- HEY! -That's rude! 這樣很沒禮貌耶

We should never throw garbage in the ocean, right? The poor sea turtles might
eat the garbage! They could get sick! Oh No!

XiaoLiuChiu Island. We can swim near the sea turtles … and we can look at

Taipei Rainbow Record

I don't really like rain...but I love rainbows! 我不這麼喜歡下雨
但我很喜歡彩虹。But … you need rain to make a rainbow. 可是下雨才有彩虹。

Rainbows happen when light shines through water… and rain is water!

Sometimes we can see a rainbow just after a big rain… that's because there
is still some water in the sky.

There are seven colors in a rainbow -- red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo and violet. 彩虹有七個顏色，紅橙黃綠藍靛紫。

Every rainbow is different … some rainbows go away really fast … but
sometimes we get lucky and see the rainbows stay in the sky for a long time.
有一些彩虹很快就消失但有時候會掛在天空很久。

Can you imagine seeing a rainbow for 2 hours? Or maybe 4 hours? That's
impossible, right? Actually...there was a rainbow in Taipei that lasted for
almost 9 hours! That is a world record!
全世界最久的彩虹，在台北，出現了9個小時！Nine hours of color in the sky!

It happened three years ago … at Yangmingshan! 3年前在陽明山發生的。

It's very special to have a rainbow for such a long time! That almost never
happens! One time in England there was a rainbow for 6 hours, but the Taipei
rainbow set a new record! 上一個世界紀錄是在英國，
6小時的彩虹，但台北的彩虹刷新了紀錄！Cool!

To make a rainbow you need water in the sky and bright sunshine… So, the
next time it rains, keep your eyes open… maybe you'll see a new

Don't Let Moose Lick Your Car

If you drive a car in Canada, you need to be careful of icy roads, snowy
weather, and… a moose licking your car!
在加拿大開車，你要注意路有沒有結冰、有沒有下雪 ... 有沒有駝鹿舔你的車子！

Did you know that in some parts of Canada, there are signs warning people to
not let moose lick their cars?
加拿大有些地方，有警告標誌「不可以讓駝鹿舔車子」。

That's right, people need to be careful of moose in Canada, because they're
very large and very strong animals. 因為加拿大駝鹿非常大而且很強壯。

But they also need to be careful not to let moose lick their cars!
還有不要讓駝鹿舔車子。

This is because if moose get used to licking cars, they might get too close
sometimes. And then they could hurt themselves or other people.

But why do moose lick cars? Experts say it's because they really like salt.
為什麼要舔車呢？ 專家說因為駝鹿很喜歡鹽巴。

Salt is used on icy roads so they aren't so slippery. And sometimes that
salty road water is splashed onto cars… making the cars salty too!

Burning Mountain of Coal

People use coal for many things. Old trains burn coal to make steam… that's
how a choo-choo-train works!
煤可以來拿做很多事，像蒸汽火車，需要燃燒煤炭才能動。

Coal is found deep in the earth. It looks like black rocks.
煤礦在地底深處，長得很像黑色的石頭。

Today we try not to burn coal because it's not clean. When you burn coal, it
makes the air dirty, and if we breathe the dirty air... it hurts our lungs.
燒煤炭會造成空氣汙染，也對肺有害。

But sometimes people don't burn coal … nature burns coal. Deep under the
ground, coal sometimes catches fire and burns. And, sometimes it burns for a
really long time. 大自然有時候也會自己燃燒煤炭，而且可以燒很久唷。

There is a mountain in Australia... where one natural coal fire has burned
for a crazy long time! This coal fire is inside the mountain, and scientists
say it has burned for more than 6,000 years! The mountain is called…
"Burning Mountain"! 在澳洲有一座火焰山，已經燒了6000年了！ 6,000 years is a
really long time!

Nobody knows when it will stop burning...沒人知道什麼時候會停止燃燒。But
don't worry. This coal fire is far away and the smoke doesn't hurt people.

Burning Mountain is just another amazing thing about our amazing world! A
