Team of Teens Gets E-Waste Recycled

We use many things that need electricity. There are computers, smartphones,
TVs, and many more things. When we don't use them anymore, they become
e-waste.
我們每天都會用到很多電子產品。電子產品被丟棄就成了電子垃圾。

Throwing away e-waste makes our land, water, and air dirty. But e-waste can
be recycled! Then people can make new things!
電子垃圾會汙染環境，但這些垃圾可以被回收再利用！

Taiwan is very good at recycling e-waste! But many other places need help.
台灣很會回收電子垃圾喔！

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates. Like all cities, it has lots of
e-waste.
杜拜這個城市位於阿拉伯聯合大公國。他們也有很多電子垃圾。

A 14-year-old girl helps get Dubai's e-waste recycled. She works with
teenagers from six schools.
那裡有個十四歲的女生集合六所學校的學生，一起回收杜拜的電子垃圾。

The girl and her team ask people for their e-waste. They do this a few times
a year. People bring their e-waste to the girl's house. The team sends it to
be recycled.
杜拜市民會把電子垃圾帶到這個女生家。接下來，這群學生就會把垃圾送去回收！

This time, the team got 900 kilograms of e-waste! That's as heavy as two big
horses!
他們這一次總共回收了九百公斤的電子垃圾！

Jane Goodall Remembered

Today we have a very special story about a very special person.

Her name is Jane Goodall.

She was a world-famous scientist.

Dr. Jane Goodall loved animals her whole life.

When she was a little girl in London, her dad gave her a toy gorilla.

She also loved reading stories about Tarzan and Doctor Dolittle.

She dreamed of living with wild animals.

When Jane was 26 years old, she went to Tanzania, Africa.

There she studied chimpanzees in the forest.

She watched how they lived.

She saw them using tools, just like humans!

She also saw that every chimp has its own personality (個性).

This changed how people thought about animals.

珍古德博士的發現成果，徹底改變了人們對黑猩猩的看法和所有動物情感與社會複雜性的理解。

Jane didn't stop with chimps.

She worked hard to protect forests, animals, and nature.

She said, "We are part of nature. We need healthy land, air, and water for
our future."

She also started a program called Roots & Shoots.

It teaches young people all over the world to care for the Earth.

Today, it's in more than 75 countries, including Taiwan!

珍古德創立的「根與芽計畫」，深耕75個國家包括台灣，培養年輕人投入保護地球的行動。

Jane lived a long life.

She was always busy, giving talks and meeting students everywhere.

She even came to Taiwan this year, at the age of 91.

Earlier this month, she passed away (過世) peacefully in her sleep.

But Jane said something beautiful: when her body is gone, something will
still live on.

She called this the "greatest adventure."

Dr. Jane Goodall showed us that animals are like us, nature is our home, and
young people can make the world better.

Clean Energy Wins!

We've got some bright news for you...

And it's all about electricity.

For the first time ever, clean energy made more electricity than coal.

That means more electricity was made by solar, wind, and nuclear power.

That's a big change!

全球再生能源發電量今年首次超越燃煤發電量。

Let's see what happened.

We know that around the world, people are using more electricity.

But solar panels and wind turbines made more electricity to meet demand.

Some countries are building a lot of solar panels and wind turbines.

But in some countries, it was a different story.

In the US this year...

Demand for electricity grew faster than clean energy output.

And in the EU...

There wasn't enough sun or wind this year.

So they had to use a bit more coal and gas.

Still, experts say this is a big turning point (轉折點).

They think clean energy will keep growing.

And solar power is a big part of that.

Solar made 83 percent of the new electricity this year.

It has now been the biggest source of new electricity worldwide for three
years in a row.

And solar power is getting cheaper.

This year, Pakistan bought enough solar panels to make power for a third of
the country.

And countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia are also getting a lot
more solar power.

But there are some new problems too.

In Afghanistan, people are using solar power to pump water from underground.

But the solar-powered pumps work so well, that water is being taken out too
fast.

Some scientists worry that groundwater (地下水) could run dry within five to
ten years.

Overall, scientists say we need to be careful.

Clean energy is good...

But we have to use it wisely.

Sunny countries can save lots of money by using solar power.

And windy countries, like the UK are working hard to make wind power cheaper.

So the world still has work to do.

But we can celebrate this one big win.

Clean energy is finally number one!
