Wild Mushrooms Can Make You Sick

Mushrooms love rainy and humid weather. Taiwan is often rainy and humid. Wild
mushrooms grow everywhere here! You might see them in the mountains, on farms
or fields, at school, or in your backyard.
台灣氣候潮濕，非常適合野生菇類的生長。這些菇類會長在山上、農場上、也可能從你家後院的泥土中冒出來！

Mmmmm! Wild mushrooms look good to eat. But some are very bad to eat. Which
are good to eat? Which are bad? It's hard to know! So Taiwan is telling
everyone not to eat wild mushrooms.
有些野菇可以吃，有些不能吃，但他們很難分辨。所以政府提醒大家不要亂吃野菇！

In Kaohsiung, some big wild mushrooms were growing next to a road. Some were
bigger than a hand! People stopped their cars to look. Maybe some wanted to
eat these wild mushrooms!
有人在高雄的路邊發現了很大的野菇！也許會有人想吃吃看。

The police came. They took the mushrooms away. They wanted to keep everyone
safe!
為了確保大家的安全，警察把那些大雨之後長出來的野菇都清除了。

Wild mushrooms can make you very sick. They can make your stomach hurt a lot.
They can make you have diarrhea. They can make you throw up.
有些野生的蕈菇有毒！亂吃野菇的話可能會肚子痛或是嘔吐！

If you eat wild mushrooms and get sick, don't wait to get better. Go to the
doctor!
如果你吃到野菇之後身體不舒服，就一定要去看醫生！

So remember: don't eat wild mushrooms. They look good but they can be very
bad for you!

Will NVIDIA Build Its Taiwan Headquarters?

We all know that Taiwan is at the center of the global semiconductor industry.

台灣是全球半導體產業的中心。

That means the tiny chips (微小的晶片) made here power everything, from
smartphones to supercomputers and even AI!

Many of the world’s top tech companies work closely with Taiwan’s chip
makers (晶片製造商).

And now, one of the world’s top computer chip companies, Nvidia, wants to
build its new Taiwan headquarters in the Beitou-Shilin Technology Park
(北投士林科技園區).

The project is called Nvidia Constellation (星座).

But there’s one problem...the land isn’t fully theirs yet.

Two pieces of land, called T17 and T18, are still under another company’s
development rights (開發權).

That company is Shin Kong Life Insurance.

The Taipei City Government gave two ideas to solve it: let Shin Kong finish
building and sell the property to Nvidia later, or end the deal and give the
land to Nvidia directly.

台北市政府提出了兩個解決辦法：

一是讓新光先完成建築，再把大樓賣給輝達；

二是終止合約，讓台北市政府可以把土地轉交給輝達。

Nvidia didn’t like the first idea, and Shin Kong hasn’t decided about the
second one.

So now, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部) is stepping in to help.

Nvidia recently sent them a letter asking for help finding the right land.

The ministry says it will reply (回覆) by October 24 and fully support
Nvidia’s plan.

The new headquarters will bring about 1,000 new jobs and focus on AI research.

Nvidia already has an innovation center (新創中心) in Neihu and built the
Taipei-1 supercomputer, which even shares its computing power (運算能力) for
free with schools and startups (新創公司)!

The government says it’s doing all it can to make sure the project moves
forward.

It wants Taiwan to stay a top player (保持領先地位) in the world of AI and
semiconductors.

「茶的一小口，人類一大步！」 月球上也能種茶？
One Small Sip for Tea, One Giant Leap for Mankind!

People all around the world love tea.

It’s one of the oldest and most popular drinks in history.

From British afternoon tea (英國下午茶) to Taiwanese bubble tea (珍珠奶茶),
it’s part of many cultures and daily life.

Imagine having a cup of tea… on the Moon!

Sounds crazy, right?

But scientists in the U.K. say it might actually be possible! Researchers
from the University of Kent have grown tea plants in soil that’s just like
the one on the Moon.

英國肯特大學的研究團隊成功在模擬月球土壤中種出茶樹！

They worked with a British tea company called Dartmoor Tea to see if plants
could survive in space-like conditions (跟太空相似的環境).

The scientists used fake Moon and Mars soil (土壤), the same kind of light,
and temperature astronauts might have one day.

And the results?

The tea plants in lunar soil grew just fine, as strong as plants grown in
normal Earth soil!

種在「月球土」裡的茶長得很好，和地球上的茶一樣健康！

But the ones in Martian soil (火星土)… didn’t grow at all.

The research team says this is an exciting first step.

If astronauts can grow plants in Moon soil, they might one day grow their own
food while living in space.

The study also helps scientists understand how to grow crops in poor soils
here on Earth, especially with problems like climate change and over-farming.

這項研究也能幫助科學家了解，如何在地球貧瘠的土地上培植農作物，尤其現在有氣候變遷，農地又過度耕作。

As one scientist joked, this discovery could mean future astronauts won’t
have to miss their “tea break” even on the Moon!

In today’s News Flash, our word of the day is “chip” (碎片, 晶片)!

The word chip is a noun.

In general, it means a small, thin piece that has broken off from something
larger, like a chip of wood, ice, or even a potato chip!

Computer chips are called chips because they are also small pieces.

They are tiny “chips” cut from a larger block of material called silicon
(矽).

Nvidia designs powerful computer chips used in robots and self-driving cars.
